Hand carving in the round gradually revealed the entire torso of the female figure. With the rough blocking of the torso completed, the remaining excess marble will now be ready to be removed on the marble sculpture of the Modern Athena.
"Over twenty years ago, I dreamed of carving a female figure of major stature - a Modern Athena on the scale of Michelangelo’s David out of a single block of marble. It seemed an impossible dream. However, in 2014, a friend offered me some blocks of marble and I began teaching myself how to carve stone. In the ensuing years, I have exhibited and sold works nationally and internationally, along with completing residencies in Italy and Greece. I am currently carving a small scale version and releasing weekly progress videos on social media. The Modern Athena sculpture is about breaking limitations, for myself and anyone." - Jyl Bonaguro
