ok Here's a little history for all of us to realize. "Facts Historically" Pate, Pake was not a Samoan traditional instrument at all. Traditionally, a rolled up Fala "A traditional Pandanuses mat" was the original sound producing instrument for such historical traditional practices in Samoa pre-Pate introduction . The Pate (Original to The Cook Islands) Pake called by the Samoans when they witnessed its appearance and sound, was brought to Samoa In the 1830's, by The London Missionary Society teachers from the Cook Islands went to Samoa to be missionaries. They took the Cook Islands "pate" with them and used it to call the people for bible class, Sunday School, church, and other religious activities. The Samoans called it "pake." No such Instrument was available to Samoa till it was introduced then. But The have uniquely adopted such instrument to accommodate current traditions/ dances since then.

Not sure where your going with your reply. There was considerable history on drumming between our Tahitian Cousins historically both in war and intermingling. Almost 75-80% of Cook islanders have Tahitian families. Even into current affairs. Like myself being Cook Island “Maori” as to my “Mahoi” of Tahiti. We keep close communication with one another. We believe the Pake, Pate, Tokere, Toele, kaara was introduced to Tahiti as they introduced the skin drums to us. Like the “Paumango” “shark skin conga” this is how the Orchestra of combined instruments was established. Skin drums was not part of Kuki Maoris Assembly till we meet up with our Tahitian Cousins. Hence the continuous battles of who produces the better orchestra sound of drums Of the Pacific in regards to the “slit gong” long drums and technique between the two island groups.

Samoa has their own drums aswell before they introduced some other drums. also the pate was obviously there and yes they did use mats but they made their drums out of wood ik this bcse i learnt it from the elders. just tht the other drums r kinda lost u might learn them in Savaií.

I’m pretty sure the pate was introduced to Samoa via Tahiti and yes Samoans used rolled up mats but they also had their own types of slit drums which were a lot bigger in size than the pate. Drums in Samoa weren’t usually used for entertainment rather it was more for signalling and communication purposes especially in times of war. Anyways that’s my 2 cents thank you and goodbye!
