Arp Fields, for ARP 2500 synthesizer.
The composition was performed live with an 8.1 surround system at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Cologne with the support of the Studio for Electronic Music.
All the sounds are generated live with the ARP 2500, the Doepfer modular is used as a mixer and for some LFOs. There is also an Expert Sleepers audio interface to send CV triggers to sync the spatialisation and some LFOs. All the pitches are manually adjusted with the controls of the ARP synthesizer. This modular system has a total of 12 oscillators. The synthesizer has not ever been restored, hence some parts where not working 100%.
All the sounds were spatialized with algorithms and LFOs in live with a custom Max/msp for the 8.1 surround system, controlled with a midi controller.
Composition, programing and live performance, Pablo Garretón
Sound recording, Simon Spillner
Video recording, Lucia Kilger and Helena Cánovas

So nice to see a 2500 being used in a performance setting, rather than simply "look at this expensive old monster I've collected".

I enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately, there are very few modern performances on the Arp2500 that correspond to my ideas about this instrument. This composition is exactly what I want to hear from arp2500. If I had the opportunity to touch the instrument, I would move in the same direction. Thank you for this video. Hope to hear more like this.

Also thank you for not playing background videos on a video screen. This is truly old school, this is what it is all about. Listening to the music. I hope to play live like this one day with my ARP 2600.

This might become my favorite electronic concert. So rare to see an ARP 2500 in concert. Specially playing experimental or ambient music. Such a treat, thanks! 😁👽

Wow, so cool that this was digitally enhanced for 8.1 surround. That is the perfect example of using modern digital and old school analog technologies in tandem to make art that wouldn’t be possible without both! I would love to have been there.

I was looking for something on the ARP2500 that would be as fascinating as the electronic works of Eliane Radigue, and finally I found it. It's up to the master's level, but somehow darker. Bravo ! Would love to see this live.

J. Talbert. Look for a "Sony ICD-BX..." that has 3 digits behind the X online or at any Walmart or Staples stores. Then go and buy yourself an 1/8th inch stereo wire that can connect from a headphone jack on a computer to the microphone input jack on the Sony ICD-BX box and download straight from here into that Sony box through the stereo wire. Once you've done that you'll have this recording for as long as you own that box. Since the Sony digital recorder has very few if any moving parts the quality of the recording will NEVER fade, skip, or break.

Hi Pablo, great set, I've returned often to this set. With the Behringer 2500 series coming out, how many VCOs would you recommend for a smaller eurorack set up? I'm new to Eurorack so the 2500 will be my first set up and I'm getting the Behring Go case which is a medium size, I'd say. I realize it's up to personal preference but since you've played it I'm interested in your opinion since you're familiar with the 2500's capabilities. Any other insights you'd be willing to share would be very helpful if you have tips on maybe buying multiples of a particular module. Right now, aside from VCOs I plan on buying one of each module until the case is full. Happy Holidays~
@pagarreton
@pagarreton 3 года назад
Hey Charles, here I am using 12 VCO, most of them with triangle waveforms. With them I created this complex chords with 8 of them and the others were used for FM modulation. I think that the minimum to start with is two oscillators, in unison or octave. With more oscillators you can choose each partial of a bigger chord if you use triangle or sines . I haven’t seen the behringer version of this yet but sounds good. The filter modules of this synths are really nice a have a lot of precision and control. Have a nice 2500 journey!
@TheMachinesWon
@TheMachinesWon 3 года назад
@@pagarreton hi Pablo, Thanks for reply! 12 vcos sounds awesome! If u wouldn’t mind giving me the breakdown of the # of modules like vfos sequencers ect that would be very valuable to me. Like you mentioned you’re creating huge cords but there’s so much room to have many different things going on depending on how many vcf/vcas you have to work with. Right now I’m planning on getting 3 of the dual vcos, 2 double env generators a multi mod filter the ladder filter, and one of each other module. But I’m tempted to double up on others if it makes sense. I’m just new to the modular world so I want to build a rig that makes sense playability wise. Any other details you can share would be amazing. The arp is a mesmerizing instrument I can’t wait to play the one Behringer has created.

Is this two Arp 2500 units? I see one of these stacked units for sale on Reverb for 70K reverb.com/item/13244817-arp-2500-1974-superb-condition-impossibly-rare I was under the impression that the Reverb listing was for an entire 2500 kit; though I’m guessing ARP sold advanced configurations with extra modules?
@johnstaf
@johnstaf 3 года назад
You could buy all sorts of configurations including multiple boxes. Sometimes it was one big box with two smaller ones. The one that was on Reverb is a complete synth, but there were some huge ones as well.

So I see a "TONUS Model 2002 ARP 2500" on Ebay for $60,000 US (GBP 49,500) as of September 30th 2019, but it doesn't look like some of the other 2500 images I have seen in the distant past (8 years or longer). Is a 2500 a "specific set of modules in a specific order" or is it just "any amount of modules in any order larger than 4 modules in total"...???
@pagarreton
@pagarreton 4 года назад
I don’t really know the exact model. It was designed especially for the studio of the HMtK, Cologne. I would think it cost way more than 60.000. It has 12 oscillators, two mixer/filters and two multi mode filters to name just a few...

I believe each instrument was a custom build. I don't think there were any two that were alike. They were custom configured to suit the customer's needs and budget.

I can understand what you mean, I can also agree but only if you accept that "experimental music" is also music and participate in the evolution of the music. Else, it's ok to don't like this kind of "organized noise" without a standard rhythmic and harmonic structure. But first pieces of Kraftwerk were also not very pleasant as "music", but their work led to techno and all sort of genres inspired by their work. Here it is the same thing. We have a debt to all these musicians that have pushed things beyond what is "normal". So, yes, it can sound strange, you can deny the "composition" nature of the piece, but never forget that this kind of things are making music evolving. Else you will still dance menuets !
