My gut still says you were correct originally. (I see something innocent and kind in this guy's eyes & aura.) And the timing is so convenient which suggests some degree of staging. Not sure it was accurate, but I saw a thumbnail on a YT video with a post from the shooter, June 2020. It stated he had voted for Trump in 2016, was disappointed, Trump had devolved, and he would be glad when Trump is gone. Gives me hope he wasn't a solid Democrat. Thanks, David 💙

This reading is interesting. I never considered that this guy might have seen himself as sort of a vigilante, paid or unpaid. He voted for Trump in 2016 and was very disappointed in him. He also wanted Haley and Vivek (MAGA) to run together. He was pro-Ukraine. Even voted for Liz Warren. There's many of us who are tired of seeing Trump weasel his way out of receiving justice and threatening this democracy. We're mentally tired, but not mentally ill.
