I always thought the way Speech sampled that “ohh, ohh, ohh” vocal (1:07, 2:39) at different tempos was such a cool production technique. As a producer myself, I geek out at things like this that your average listener probably couldn’t care less about. LOL.
Without remembering the name of this band or the song or many of the lyrics, it was hard finding this song. I had to use some serious Google-Fu to find it. So glad I found it again!
Listening to this on June 6, 2020 in Minneapolis during a thunderstorm. 🙏🙏🙏 Every time it rains George Floyd's memorial is lovingly covered by tarps to protect it.
I used to love this song. This album and the next really impacted me spiritually and mentally. I remember telling my dad I liked this song "Raining Revolution". He said mockingly, "I don't think he's talking about rain." I hit play on the radio. He was then like, "Oh, I guess he is talking about the rain". LOLOL
How does a rock guy like me love stuff like this? Because it's fabulous music and maybe I am not just a rock guy, but a music guy. Makes me feel like when I heard The Message by Grandmaster Flash the first time. And the great thing is this stuff never gets old. I know this type of rap was seen as an alternative to gangsta rap and while I like a lot of gangsta rap, at a certain point you need to turn inward, become more introspective while still remaining strident in their cultural perspective. This act has to be one of the most under-rated on the planet.
