When Joe and Danny started experiencing some unusual symptoms, they were struggling to figure out what was going on. Things quickly took a sharp turn for the two as their symptoms worsened placing prompting multiple stays in the hospital. Both of these men had a medical mystery going on in their bodies. They were getting drunk without drinking alcohol and Danny would even get arrested for a DUI despite not drinking alcohol for several years. But soon, they would both discover the truth when they learned about a rare condition called Auto-Brewery Syndrome (ABS) and things for them would quickly change.
I’m Petal Palmer and I bring you stories of medical cases and mysteries from around the world.

What's depressing is thinking just how many people could have suffered from this with no diagnosis and the entire time, their families and doctors accused them of being an alcoholic and lying and manipulating everyone while they themselves weren't alcoholics. Though addiction is recognised as an illness now, it wasn't a few years ago and imagine how bad it was throughout the decades where anti-biotics were in use.
@janemiettinen5176
@janemiettinen5176 11 дней назад
I think someone must’ve died from this and now the family believes their loved one was a closet drunk, likely blame themselves for ‘not knowing’ something was going on. Like someone dies in a stupid accident or car crash and their blood alcohol comes back at 0.5, doctors take it as a sign of alcoholism. Family friend died suddenly and first the doctors claimed it was alcohol poisoning, she died in sauna on national holiday. But it just didn’t sit right with anyone who knew her, she wasn’t much of a drinker. Her husband was beyond baffled. When the blood tests finally came back, months later, her cause of death was changed to carbon monoxide poisoning. It was still really sad, but at least it made more sense now - her husband didn’t have to think he missed something for the rest of his years. It was just an unfortunate accident. I was just a kid, but I remember how outraged and offended everybody was about the primary ruling. And even tho addiction is understood to be an illness today, even medical professionals can treat addicts very poorly. I grew up in shitty part of the city, many of my childhood friends are addicts and Im disgusted how different my healthcare is in comparison. Friend with uterine infection nearly died, because she wasn’t taken seriously, but as a pill shopper or drug seeker. Even with fever so high, the thermometer didnt register it anymore.. When she finally collapsed and was hospitalized, some of the nurses were just cruel to her. And her case is just one out of many. Im amazed this can happen in 21st century, in 1st world country and with people who should know better!

I had heard of ABS before but forgot what it was called, and the only thing that came to mind was alcohol belly syndrome. But thank you for this deep dive! I'm currently working with substance abuse clients as a therapist and feel like it's important for those of us in the mental health field to also know about medical conditions that can mimic the diagnoses we treat.

One of my cousins is an ER doctor and he just ran into this recently. Thing is guy was an actual acholic and had to stop drinking for an upcoming surgery but then kept appearing drunk when he was insistent he hadn't had anything, so his primary doctor thought about ADS and did the tests and lo and behold they think a prior surgery some years ago where he was on antibiotics and afterwards he started appearing drunk without drinking anything. No one believed him so he eventually figured if he was gonna get called a drunk he might as well actually drink and enjoy himself and it all spiraled from there until he had to stop for the aforementioned surgery and then he kept feeling drunk despite not drinking again. Thankfully his doctor believed him and got to the bottom of it and according to my cousin the guy got his treatment and they're waiting to see how that goes before they do the surgery. But like....gods, I can't imagine. Because yeah people who have alcohol addiction are treated as less than human in a lot of cases, right on par with people who take drugs [both legal and not] despite it being legal to sell to adults and this idea that as adults hanging out usually involves alcohol of some kind. I've faced serious stigma myself for refusing to drink because I generally don't the feeling of being drunk except in a few rare instances, even when I say stuff like "I'm the designated driver" or "I don't drink for religious reasons" there's still this idea that if you don't have alcohol you can't have fun or you're ruining the party/mood/vibe or whatever and it sucks so much. And pot is legal where I am and I take edibles, and when I say that the amount of people who start treating me like I'm some dirty homeless person is wild. We really need to put an end to alcohol culture and the stigma around substance use.

I am medically complex with multiple different disabilities. A large portion of my diagnosises were found from listening to and talking to other people. I would hear about these things, research them to see if my symptoms and experiences lined up, and then brought the possibilities to my doctors. They would then run the tests or send me to a specialist who would then run the tests. Now, this included ruling out a lot of those possibilities. I certainly didn't have a large portion of the ideas people had. But it gave me new ideas to try and rule out if nothing else. And a small section of the suggested things i did have. So now, largely thanks to other people, i was able to figure some stuff out. Most of my doctors initially didn't care to do more than rule out the most common things. And many of my conditions still fall into common or uncommon, but aren't necessarily the first thought when my symptoms are listed. It didn't help that because i have multiple issues, its hard to tell what's one thing verses another. But i kept working, and i still am. We still don't know some things, like wtf is going on with my foot and eyes, why my upper back is so bad, and trying to nail down my exact neurological problems. But having people there to support you can help a ton. Do not be afraid to push your doctors into doing more tests if something is wrong but nothing is showing. Or even getting different doctors if its available to you. ❤

Have they tested you for Epstein bar virus? My daughter currently has mononucleosis, aka EBV and it got me to thinking. I looked up in RU-vid and saw a woman with many of my symptoms tested over 600 in her blood work for EBV. The normal range is something like 20-40. She had had it as a teenager or young adult but it never went dormant for her. She was treated with 3 months of antivirals and began feeling much better. I’m definitely going to check into it for myself. Also, idk if ABS is a possibility for me, but my body seems to make glucose out of nothing and my fasting glucose is always the highest. I keep asking for an explanation, but all they say is my liver must have stopped functioning 🤷🏼‍♀️ but that doesn’t make sense to me since as I said, I can have high blood sugar without even consuming carbs.

15:39 Omg! I've had this done! Fell off a cliff, broke my nose (had no idea until years later) among other injuries. So had to have that deviated septum surgery..plus. Was told it be a pretty unpleasant 2 week recovery. BS!!!! Minimum 4 weeks in agony! Missed my 20 year high school reunion as I was told I'd feel better by then, not even close! Paid $5000 out of pocket and had no idea this wasn't a permanent fix! Also had to sign a waiver beforehand saying I wouldn't sue them if they blinded me! I drive for a living! Kinda need my vision but the pain was worse than d*@th and I couldn't take it anymore! This was in 2007 and internet definitely wasn't even close to what it is today! As I recall, those were dial up days! So thorough research wasn't as accessible as it is now but to be honest I wouldn't have done any! The pain was *so* bad, I couldn't do my job and had to quit! I had trouble tying my shoes, there would be no brain capacity for research!

She was also diagnosed with helicobacter, the doctor brushed it off and did not do anything (even though this bacteria is also strongly connected to stomach cancer)! She also has IBS and diabetes. She was treated with 3 or 4 different antibiotics earlier this year for pneumonia, for about two months. It clicked as I am watching your video that it is VERY likely she has ABS. Before going into details I immediately thought of ABS! My memory is a little fuzzy but Few years ago i remember reading about it especially the case of a woman that gave birth to couple of babies that tested positive for FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).I think she gave birth to 3 and each time, the child was taken away by CPS. It took them years to figure it out.

I don't have ABS but I am in recovery. I go to meetings. I still see a doctor who specializes in addiction medicine as my PCP. You are right, it is very misunderstood. It's gotten better than it was 24 years ago when I first began this journey but there is still a long way to go. This was such a fascinating upload. I had never heard of ABS. That must have been so frightening for these couples. They are very lucky to have had wives who fought for them and believed them, rather than accusing them of drinking behind their backs.

Oh Miss Petal Palmer, you are such a light! Is there an email address for suggested posts or stories? I lost my son in 2022 from something that was highly preventable & definitely medical related. I feel like it's my duty to spread awareness to prevent other tragedies like this, but i don't know where to start. I would love your input or for you to tell his story.

Now I'm picturing somebody with this condition who IS an actual alcoholic ALSO. So they deliberately keep loading up on carbs to stay drunk. There must be at least one person in the world like this.

Tbh I as a factory mechanic, if I was also the team manager, I wouldn't hire someone with a DUI history or ABS. Not because I'm a cruel and biased prick, but because it would be dangerous. I'm cleaner than grandma's kitchen and even I almost lost a finger here and there. I knew a dude who had ONE beer during lunch break, later he fell down an unfinished staircase, it was a construction site, while hitting scaffolding on his way down. He didn't survive it. His widow and kids didn't receive a single penny because the autopsy revealed that he had an absolutely ridiculous small amount of alcohol in his blood.

In South Africa, when you are given antibiotics, you are also given probiotics. This is to help regrow the good bacteria in the gut.

My chiropractor has that. He didn’t know for many years. This was before he became a chiropractor and what actually pushed him to consider a career in health care. He chose to be a chiropractor after his diagnosis. He said that he even became violent when he had an ‘episode’. So, he went through extensive testing because he had no idea what was going on with him and people didn’t believe he was not an alcoholic. Thankfully, his wife stuck by him. Then one day they finally had an answer. His body converts carbohydrates into alcohol. It didn’t happen with all carbs at first but slowly it happened more and more often as time passed. He cut carbs and other things from his diet (and added some supplements that I don’t remember the name of). After a while he was finally able to get his life back. He’s extremely careful about what he eats since (and even with what he applies to his skin). He is such a great person, I am so glad my family met his.

Thank you for educating people on the gut microbiome, it's a booming area of research that was ignored for way too long in the past. It seems like every day we find out a new function of the microbiome, and we say "damn, why haven't we thought of this before?" We have many other microbiomes, on our skin, in our bladders, in our vaginas, even in our lungs. These are not so well studied and I can't wait to see what knowledge the future will bring. Thank you also for showing that antibiotics, despite being such a routine treatment, have big consequences. Some doctors prescribe them like candy though, and in some cases the validity of the antibiotic treatment's dose and length is very questionable. Sometimes doctors will even give you antibiotics for viral infections, "just in case", even though we know very well that antibiotics don't work against viruses.

Our son has many automatic nervous system diagnoses and autoimmune diseases. He’s doing well due to amazing specialists. However two years ago he developed Selective IGM deficiency. He’s mostly homebound, but he chooses activities that may introduce infection and the possible results of developing an infection. What activities are worth taking the chance of dying? We respect all of his choices. This is such a rare diagnosis. Would you consider covering IGM deficiency? Thank you for your channel and your videos. ❤️

Imagine being a doctor who just says “nah I don’t believe in that diagnosis.” Like what. Why r u even a doctor if you pick and choose medical conditions. Last time I checked, it’s not it job to have a personal opinion on a patients health… Hopefully med school’s incorporate cases like this in their curriculum. Seems like once most doctors graduate, they are unable to further their education and knowledge. Shameful, but I’m glad you’re shining a light on this!! Now I’m officially more qualified to diagnose this than some doctors apparently 😎
