Hey guys, I am no coloring grading expert! But, I found a nice color grading workflow that gives me great looking footage for my GH5 and GH5S. In this video, I am going to show you a quick overview of how I use the Emotive GHAlex Color Conversion kit. I recently switched from Premiere CC to Davinci Resolve to edit all of my videos so that is what I will be using to edit the footage in this video.

Really nice wrkflow. But i would give you an advice in working with the filmlook emulations. Before you use these looks, you must transform your image via Color Space Transform in the Output Gamma to Cineon Flim Log. You get only with this methode an consistance and correct filmlook. Try to use your old workflow for the GH5 und embed this step with the CST.

Nice tutorial on your steps youve taken to make your GHAlex LUT wwork for you! I just came back from japan and shot with my GH5 in Cine-D for 2 weeks! I had a few questions I hope you dont mind answering! 1. After a couple years are you still using the GHAlex LUT? 2. Did you find it worth buying both the Daylight and Tungsten version of the LUTS? 3. Are you doing a lot of tweaks to your footage after applying the Alex LUT? 4. Do you use any noise reduction within Davinci Resolve or 3rd party purchase like Neat Video? 5. I see that you've been upgrading over the years from GH5 to s5 to s5ii. As a hobbyist would you say the upgrade is worth it for someone like me? I'm sort of use to just shooting on my Sigma 18-35 and other primes in manual so I sort of wonder how much I would appreciate the Auto Focus. Obviously these are all tools and it's just a matter of how you use them but I see mix reviews about the autofocus and low light being Good but not great like "sony level". I appreciate the videos! I hope your future weddings are coming out great!

Interesting. I have that lut, but could never really figure it out. Their instructions were not enough to make things clear for me. I don't use Davinci, so I would be a little lost. Interesting that you applied that to Cine V. That is what I pretty much stick to these days. But I've noticed that Cine V falls apart very easily if you color grade it much. Which brings me to a question I had as I was watching.... I noticed you shot the one clip in VLog 8bit. I have VLog, but know little about it, I had heard that it needed to be shot in 10 bit so as not to fall apart in the grade. You seem to have been able to get very nice results with it though. Thanks for another very interesting video. It will be sad for me when you switch the SH1 (or whatever), Ha!
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking 4 года назад
Hi Randy, When I first got the GHAlex Lut I was a little confused as well. But after some playing around with it it was pretty simple to use. You know, I considered showing how to do the grades in Premiere CC as well but I didn't want to make the video too long. Basically, in Premiere, you will use adjustment layers instead of the Nodes (You can look at the Nodes in Davinci like Horizontal Adjustment layers. In Premiere the Adjustment layers are Vertical). I love Cine-V, I have used it on a few weddings, but as you mentioned when you mess up it's almost impossible to fix. I shoot about 50 - 60% of my wedding day in 4k at 8bit. So far as long as I have enough light to overexpose my image by one stop the vlog-L holds up pretty well. For my GH5 I try to never go above 1600 ISO and I shoot everything in 4k (In some situations I've had to push it to 2500 ISO though). For my GH5S I'll go all the way to 6400 and it will still look good. I do sometimes have some banding issues but when I do I just lower the levels of my grade. Regarding the S1H, I probably won't be moving to that until the Fall (if my wife lets me lol).

I have one question, at 4:17 what is the purpose of raising all color channels and then bringing down the saturation?
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking 4 года назад
I have seen several colorist on RU-vid do this in their videos and I also wondered what's the point when you can just create a node boosting saturation. So I did a few experiments on my videos just creating a node to boost saturation, and then doing it this way. From what I see the skin tones react better when doing it this way, and, I feel like you have more control over the vibrance of the image. But I do not claim to be a professional colorist so please do some experimenting on your own with this as well and let me know your findings. I am always looking to improve.

Hi, I actually shoot 10bit a lot. But I really wanted to show that you can get a great 8bit image in vlog-l. We do shoot 10bit 60p, however, we have to use our Atomos inferno and Ninja V. These setups are big and can time consuming to set this up so we mainly use our external recorders only for the ceremony and the toasts (so we can be light and quick for everything else). If you check out my GH5 2.6 Autofocus update vid a lot of that footage is 10 bit.

your grade looks very good. I'm wondering what result you get if you apply the luma adjustment before Main LUT?
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking 4 года назад
Hi Cona, I need to actually do an updated video as an update to the GHAlex kit is available. Regarding your question, the reason why I personally use the Luma node after the main node is because if ever needed I will add a parallel node to the luma, which I think should always come after the main (IMO). But either way, I've learned that there is actually a easier way to use the GHAlex conversion kit. You can just go 1.) WB Node 2.) Main node 3.) Luma.

Hi Thomas, can you share the GHAlex graded clip from the bride prep. I’m testing using Color Space Transform from V-Log to Arri Log to Rec709 and it should’ve been very interesting to see if I can get the same result as with the GHAlex LUT. I don’t know what the GHAlex lut is doing but if it converts it to Arri color space then maybe CST via Arri Log can be an option?

I don't understand that comparison. You apply curve adjustments in GHAlex workflow, but not in the original workflow. That's the difference, not the LUT. Why does everyone compares non corrected standard panasonic LUT and Alex's without any corrections? Of course different LUTs will look different because they already incorporate some adjustments like curves, etc, but it doesn't mean they're better. I didn't see how you showed the actual color science of Alex's LUT being better. Only shadows/highlights. But it's a matter of curves play with any LUT.
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking
@StoryDrivenFilmmaking 4 года назад
Hi, you are actually correct. I have also learned a much better way to use the GHAlex workflow and it would have been nice if I would have put it up again the Panasonic color corrector. There has also been an update to the GHAlex kit. The great thing is I can make an update video in time.

Most of the shots in my wedding films and 90% of the shots in this video were all with the GH5S (All the shots in the intro montage are with the GH5S).
