Amy Adams should have gotten an Oscar nomination, and arguably even won, for this performance. Beautiful film! It's very much in the conversation for us science fiction geeks, or anyone who loves Denis Villeneuve. This was the first of his films that I saw.

I agree completely. Emma Stone's performance in La La Land was entertaining, but I don't think it rose to the level that Amy Adams brought to this role.

This should be good! One of the themes explored in the book and then the movie is called the linguistic relativity hypothesis (sometimes mistakenly called the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis). The hypothesis is basically that our language influences our reality and vice versa. In the case of this story, the aliens' perception of time and their language is explored as someone with a different language learns and begins to think in their language. Their experience of time is circular and so is their language. As the protagonist begins to think in their language, she begins to experience time as they do. On a smaller scale something similar does happen in a way here. A characteristic of very small languages, those with small vocabularies, shows a correlation between conception of reality and language. The Pirahã language, for example, doesn't appear to have numbers. Instead there is simply a word for "some" and then comparison words similar to "fewer" and "more". There are also no distinctions between singular and plural in their grammar. So in Pirahã, saying "give to him" or "give to them" is exactly the same. It's all very interesting, but since we know about are human, they all have basic underlying similarities. So, we can't prove or disprove the linguistic relativity hypothesis until we encounter a species sufficiently different from us with a different enough language.

This is one of my all-time favs. Never get tired of watching it. Cemented Denis as a top-tier director, which has continued to this day. Just about a perfect movie. I love how it plays with narrative expectations - that actions which we see early in the film occur before those which happen later. We're presented to the events non-linearly, as Louise now experiences them; we only learn it at the "end" of the film.

I recently came across your channel and think you have a great head on your shoulders. As others have mentioned, there is a short novella that this movie is based on, and that short novella is also part of a collection from the same author, every one of those short novellas contain so many great concepts and ideas in a very digestible manner. It is called "The story of your life and others", where "The story of your life" is the original title for this specific novella. It is written by Ted Chiang and he has won multiple awards for his writing. And to this day, it's still one of the most impactful books of fiction I have ever read, and it changed my perspective on so much of my life that still holds true today. I never actually liked this movie, as some parts of the plot was re-written to fit the big screen over the book and I feel some of the concepts communicated gets lost in that translation. I hope you see this comment, because I do think you'd get a lot from actually exploring the source material for this one. Hope you have a great day and future ahead of you!

@elizabethparker4511 I could imagine. You say you feel like you and your child are INFJ'S, and one might be INTP. Take the test and just be 100% honest. If they are old enough to understand, have them take it as well. This applies to everyone when you take the test 1. Be 100% honest. 2. When the question asked, make sure it's answered again 100 %, not how you would like to feel or imagine yourself, but who you truly are. There can be complete opposite results if answered incorrectly. I could help explain much more, but it would take hrs to explain. I'm an INTP-T. My youngest daughter is an ISFJ -T My oldest daughter is an INFJ-T. my wife/ex-wife ESFJ-A is still together somehow. Lol, it really is funny when you think bout it, but anyway. It's definitely interesting, to say the least. Please keep looking further into this. 1. it could help change the world for the greater good. People would understand who and what they are supposed to be doing in society. 2. Parents would know how to raise their children exactly according to their personality, and it would almost eliminate the TURBULENT. I highlight that because there seems to be a pattern of parents that try to raise their children one way, and that child's personality is completely different from their parents, then most generally SHTF. I'm sure you know what SHTF is, but if not, it's Sh*t Hits The Fan. Most generally, it will create a TURBULENT child.
@medieval420
@medieval420 Месяц назад
@elizabethparker4511 Also, in general, it would help family members, co-workers, neighbors, strangers in stores, parents, children, children at school, teachers basically everything that makes up society as a whole understand themselves and each other. If everyone knew where they fit in society, you would have fewer problems in the world. Why? Because everyone would be able to understand each other and where they fit in. If you're truly interested in helping the world, please take a Matrix rabbit hole dive into all 16 personalities. You will eventually see how and why this is so important for humanity as a whole.

Such an incredible film!!! So profoundly moving and beautifully crafted. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Supposedly the General’s wife’s dying words translate to “In war there are no winners, only widows and orphans”. Or so I’ve been told. My reaction to the question is essentially- i don’t think it matters so it’s best to assume at least non malevolence. If a species that far advanced wants to do us harm, there is not a thing we could do about it. And to be clear, for the near future at least even just the ability (and strong enough motivation to bother with the immense resources needed) to get here from another system already means they are almost certainly that far beyond, then add the clearly far advanced materials science and ability to directly manipulate gravity.

Starfish are interesting in that they appear to have Radial Symmetry. But, upon closer examination (underneath), they also have visible Bilateral symmetry. The heptapods, as envisioned by author Ted Chiang, were completely radial, with a circumferential array of eyes. But in the ("Ian Walks") lower body shots of the movie, the heptapods seemed to be "leggier" in the back. In the climactic "face-to-face" scene, not so. Loved the alien design, in any case. Creatures from a LOW gravity celestial object, albeit with a DENSE atmosphere.

@BigGator5

This movie is overrated. It is extremely effective at emotional manipulation to be sure, but it honestly has little to say if you step back and really think about it. I get the film has a lot to say about the importance of linguistics, but that's not a theme or something anyone would disagree with. The anti-war message is nice, but I'd be hard pressed to think of a movie that was pro-war. I also hate the predestination message in this movie. Romancing predestination is, in my opinion, cowardice and immoral. God gave us a MIND and a SOUL to make a choice. To deny free will, is an attempt to deny responsibility for your actions. Besides, this is all academic really. Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle (or quantum mechanics in general), just makes predestination impossible. The Laws Of Thermodynamics and Entropy, make time travel equally impossible. For the good love of God, tell me you have heard of Schrödinger's Cat? I didn't appreciate it until much later, but Minority Report (2002) is the greatest middle finger to predestination ever made. The Moon (2009) also subtly tells predestination to take a hike. The Matrix (1999) was also a great anti-predestination movie, but then the sequels completely walked that back. Those are the only ones I can think of right now off the top of my head. It is indeed a beautifully made innovated sci-fi film and no one is going to say otherwise, but a forgettable flick all the same. Honestly, I keep forgetting this movie exists until it pops off in my radar. Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Carmela Nossa Guizzo and Sangita Patel. Beam Me Up Fact: Montana is also the site of first contact between humans and aliens in Star Trek lore, as first revealed in Star Trek: First Contact (1996). Solving Style Fact: While the shape of the ship was decided early on, Denis Villeneuve had great difficulty imagining an interior that would allow humans to easily navigate through such a steep and vertical design. The later decision to turn gravity sideways offered an obvious and convenient solution. Rosetta Stone Fact: Director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer created a fully functioning, visual, alien language. Heisserer, Villeneuve, and their teams managed to create a "logogram bible" that included over a hundred different completely operative logo-grams, seventy-one of which are actually featured in the movie. Casting Notes Fact: In Arrival (2016) Forest Whitaker plays a military officer who recruits civilian experts with special skills to assist with the first contact of an alien species. In Species (1995) he was a civilian expert with a special skill who was recruited to assist with the first contact of an alien species. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner have both appeared in comic book films dealing with alien invasions. Adams starred in DC's Man Of Steel (2013); Renner starred in Marvel's The Avengers (2012).
@GeraldH-ln4dv
@GeraldH-ln4dv Месяц назад
Fun fact: This movie has nothing to say about predetermination. You misunderstood the entire movie. It is about how we experience time linearly but another sentient species, if there are any, may experience time differently, in this case in a circular fashion. This is reflected in their language, or - which is the central point of the movie - language influences how we see reality. Your religion has nothing to with the movie and the movie has nothing to do with your religion. Also, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle has nothing to do with predetermination and The Laws of Thermodynamics (just thermodynamics, entropy is a part of thermodynamics) do not have anything to do with time or time travel. You are taking bits and pieces of theories and hypotheses that you don't appear to grasp and using them to support a thoroughly unscientific religious viewpoint. Pseudo-science.
