This movie has a very deep meaning.. it says a lot when you sit somewhere alone and think about it.. Messages such as :- war doesn't bring winners,but widows.. They are many more advanse race in this universe. Time travelling is real.. You dont need sound to convey your message to anyone.. And much more .. Jokes apart,i am speechless..this movie is teaching us a lot if we are ready to learn it

There was no timeline where the Chinese general didn't give his number and the war actually happened. There is only one timeline in the movie. The Chinese general gave his number to Lousie in the future because Lousie and him both can understand time in a non linear way now. Lousie asked for his number and the mandarin message because she knew that she was having this vision in the past and she got the number and the message from this vision (because in the future she would have already experienced it). The Chinese general complies because he also understands that his present can influence the past and that's why Lousie is asking for this information. That's bootstrap paradox for you. If you have seen an event in the future and it has affected your present, you will never know what happened first, the present or the future. There is no beginning or end. Same thing is shown when she finally understands their language fully. That is because she reads her own book from the future in her vision. And she writes this book after these events. You cant say what led to what.

Just watched Arrival, it is one of the best sci fi movies I have ever watched. This movie is a classic! 💯

There are some things I can think of which can help. 1. To understand a language you need to have empathy. You need to be able to appreciate that the entity concerned is communicating. How do they perceive the world and your communication? What is important to them? How will they try to make you understand? Louie was able to somewhat perceive the future...so she had the capabilities of empathy with the aliens. Which is why she was able to decipher the aliens language. 2. Why were the aliens here? They perceived that in the future (3000 years hence)they will need human help and humans will be able to help them. But if this is so then why do they need to appear now. It implies that they have timed their visit to pass on a key capability to humans which will help human evolution. Why give this gift? To either enable humans to help themselves or use this gift so as to evolve a capability in 3000 years to be able to help the aliens. An example of this? Louie already has used this gift to get the Chinese general to ward off a planned nuclear attack on the aliens! So, as the world learns this language and starts seeing things from an omnichronological perspective they will start developing new technology and new tools. As humans we already have the capabilities to see in the future and past. The only thing is that most of us don't use it.

She can already see future from the starting in small parts like deja vu. And that is the "weapon/gift" Weapon or gift:- it's on ur understanding of this power. And this gift/weapon can open time. It's not there language actually cause of which she can see future she already have this power. They just came here to teach us the language so that we can help them in future, in much better way than we are doing for them in current future from where they came in this past to weaponizing us. This film has the justification of almost every twist and turns without any major contradiction except the scene where Louise fails to rewind what she said 18 months ago. I think this is a top class sci-fi.
