Very nice review. I'm only surprised by the fact that no one talked about sound. The sound design, sound editing and music is incredible in this movie.

Its the only thing that held the movie together, the cinematography was so boring it almost put me to sleep. That being said, the sound really brings the narrative to fruition.

Alonso saying the story is pretty "straightforward" is the flashing neon sign he DID NOT get it.

@ahsannaseer3237

Aten Akehnaton You may think that it is obvious and on the nose, but it is not "straightforward". SPOILER ALERT. It is not straightforward because; the film's beginning and ending is actually palindromic, just like Hannah the name of the protagonist's daughter. The opening scene in the beginning that feels like a flashback for a long time in the film, is actually not just a simple flashback but a flashforward. The film also constantly jumps in time, so I would absolutely not call it "straightforward", but perhaps you meant something else when you described it using that term.
@atenakehnaton3965
@atenakehnaton3965 7 лет назад
I mean there isn't a lot to think about because the movie is an exposition machine that makes sure the audience gets everything. It's like getting hit with a sledgehammer of plot points to make sure NO ONE gets lost. That's what I mean by straight forward. They take a character, surround her with idiots, so she can explain really obvious things, which is really an insult to the intelligence of the audience. I guess what I'm stating is, there's no subtlety, it's obvious and straightforward(plain to see).

This is a movie made so that pseudo-intellects and pretentious wannabe film critics can pretend to be intelligent by praising it.This is the most boring movie I have ever seen The story about aliens is just framework for the story about Louise and her future sick kid, the story about life. There is no suspense , aliens are just extras. This is drama about life and bad things in life, the end is stupid and rushed

Best film all year. Any film that has you discussing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, Lakoff & Johnson's conceptual metaphors, game theory, non-linear time and determinism, facing life given the inevitability of death and loss... is truly magnificent.

[SPOILERS} Really surpised by the lukewarm reception below. For me, the idea of Amy Adams having to decide between the inevitable pain, heartbreak and disconnection that will come from falling for Renner, yet going for it just to feel that happiness again, made it a really poignant reflection on human purpose. Not to mention how slick it is in terms of plot mechanics, setting, thematic links, cinematography and THAT SCORE etc etc etc. The actual plot is easily readable after a a second watch but its depth seems to be obscured on purpose so you only get it if you 'learn' how to read her emotions like Adams does with the language.

Christy appears to have hang-ups about Denis Villeneuve in general. She has complimented Prisoners, Sicario, and this for their cinematography, but is really dismissive of their narrative strengths. She's always like, "meh, it's fine."

@ethidian3444

She doesn't really care about quality though. She cares about the more subjective experience of whether or not the movie appealed to her desires/interests/taste. I like her commentary a lot of the time but I'm admittedly starting to become really salty toward critics in general ;)
@cjwright79
@cjwright79 7 лет назад
So... you're saying she's mistaken or unappreciative because she's consistent in her reservations and concerns, is that the implication? You'd prefer it she wildly varied what she has trouble with, or maybe the only acceptable thing for her to offer would be unqualified and effusive praise because then she would be just like you, an echo chamber for your own thoughts and feelings.

There is a classic episode from The Twilight Zone called "The Gift". It's about an alien arrival to Earth & the human challenge to discern whether it comes in peace or to destroy us. "The Arrival" takes this premise to a 2 hour length as Amy Adams plays an expert linguist trying to decode the alien language to determine their intentions. This movie is a cinematic "followup" to Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" & has more in common with that in its cerebral approach than the typical violent alien invasion film. I appreciated the work director Denis Villeneuve did here & frankly like his Spielberg followup more than I did Nolan's controversial Kubrick followup. Although there are still some cliches it can't avoid, I found myself terrified & fascinated by it's premise at the same time. Grade of "A-"

I just saw this movie tonight. I definitely deserves a 9. You should go see it and pay close attention from beginning to end. It's one of the rare complex movies that gives you hints throughout, to help you understand the movie as you watch it. Denis wants to make you think. The ending will pull everything together for you. Best wishes to film lovers, Ted

I hadn´t watched that film until last year and I loved it too. I mean, not Interstellar to me, but I loved most of it (effects cannot be the same obviously). Loved Jodie Foster in it. That whole discovery during the first part of the film was so exciting. Perfectly done. I´m not big on religion so all the religion talk put me off a little bit. Thankfully, films nowadays seem to not be that influenced or afraid of showing science and that´s it. Funny fact that Matthew was part of that film (I had no idea, I always knew about that film as a Jodie Foster film) and 15 years later he was the leading actor in Interstellar :)

I'm late to the party, But Matt was the only one that got this right. It's great on so many levels. Cinematography, Direction, Script, and Acting. We experience 2 acts where we are being played without even knowing it. And, we have a 3rd act with a real payoff for a change. The movie demands that you see it twice. We have been so lucky to experience so many exceptional Sci-Fi movies in the last few years. Arrival, Ex-Machina, A Quiet Place are the ones that 1st come to mind. These all stand as great movies regardless of genre. I will have to re-watch The Martian & Interstellar to see if I can put them in the same class.

It was one of the greatest movies, in regards to philosophical content, that I have ever seen. I'm sure most of it flew right over people's heads. Where the movie best alluded to the philosophy are in the little remarks made about this struggle between language and science. I think language mirrors the subconscious and emotions and images that come from it, in contrast with science, which is external and hard lined.

West Gaming - I'm SO excited! 🤓 I read the short story as well, but heard they changed up the ending, since in the story, the Aliens just left & that was it. Without spoiling, I'll say that they didn't really change the ending - they just added to it. And it doesn't really have anything to do with the aliens - they take it much deeper than that. It took me awhile to appreciate it but once I did, I think it makes the whole movie even stronger.

It's a story about a mother and her understanding of what time and life bring to her, and humans inability to think and make up memories except in a linear fashion. It talks about time, living in a moment, and returning to a moment that never dies. Time is a sea, not linear. You all missed the damn point. Kurt Vonnegut and Slaughterhouse Five.

Would a father really leave his dying child? That part didn't make sense to me, sure he might be mad at his wife but the child exists. You wouldn't leave, you would stay to the end just like she did. Ok, so I just finished watching this movie literally seconds ago and it's not the best movie or the worst, it's actually pretty slow but I did like the story line and how it developed with the main characters instead of the cliche fast pace that movies seem to make. At times it was a bit confusing where I thought it was showing her past but it was actually foreshadowing. I wouldn't say it's my fave movie and and amazing one at that but it's not bad, not a lot of action but it did have to do with a lot of internal dialogue with the lead which can be frustrating at time as well.

Okay well I finally got around to watching it, and I hate to say that I absolutely hated it. I thought it was some of the most contrived/pretentious drivel I have ever seen. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I also figured out the twist very early on. Amy Adams was not old enough to have an adult daughter die of cancer. I was also very disappointed that they didn't name the aliens Kang and Kodos as opposed to Abbott & Costello.

SPOILER : I loved the movie but one thing, The scene where she called the chinese minister and told him what his wife said confused me, IF we are going with the idea that time is non linear, then she should of known what he meant when he told her, because as we have seen throughout the movie, the time displacements that happen is her living in those moments simultaneously. Why is it then at that moment it seems she traveled to the future not remembering the past. Also and this paradox is in most time travel movies, if she needed the future to alter the past then what about the future that was not altered. How was there a union if she didnt call him in the future until he reminded her to alter the past. ahhh so confusing

Good movie, but not great. I think the ending had some logical problems (sort of like Interstellar.) This movie is about communication-not aliens or how humanity needs to work together. It does make Amy Adams character god-like. In reality this situation would hinge on many people working together, not just one lady.

... but halfway through, everybody disconnects and goes their own way; which seemed a fitting allegory for what is happening today - with the end of the EU in sight, and the UN no longer being taken seriously, and Trump's overtures to leaving NATO, which would be the end of that as well. We're fragmenting badly, and it didn't take a dramatic alien invasion to do it! - I think it's entirely possible that a sudden appearance of 12 massive alien spaceships would CERTAINLY cause the worst of us to take the worst sort of unilateral action. "You do what you like with your spaceship ... but we're nuking ours while we get the chance!"

For whatever reason I couldn't get past some of the choices in sound and music throughout the film. Also, all the sick daughter stuff just didn't do it for me.

Saw it yesterday, I thought it was garbage. It was massively cliched and sappy. Now it wasn't bad in the acting, directing, cinematography, etc. but the story was dumb and obvious. The aliens were uncreative. The movie really could have done something great, but it treats its audience like morons, by filling the movie with idiots so the main character can explain REALLY obvious shit. I think Ex Machina handled similar ideas in a much better way.

how was the story dumb and obvious?
@atenakehnaton3965

Jason Friedlander About half way through I knew everything that was going to happen. The entire movie was obvious. The dumb part was all the things they explained about language. No fucking shit, I think everyone knows this who isn't a complete fucking moron. Ex Machina covered much of the same material in a much more nuanced and intelligent manner. This movie really beats you over the head with the obvious. I get it's not a thinking movie, it's an emotional fantasy, but Jesus stop pointing out the fucking obvious. They basically took a character surrounded that character with morons so she could explain common sense. The movie had some good points but it was mostly dull and pretentious.

In what way does this resemble Ex Machina? I can't see any parallels at all.
@atenakehnaton3965
@atenakehnaton3965 7 лет назад
***** A lot of Ex Machina was about language and how the mind works. In the movie Eva even goes so far as to state Blue Book is named after Ludwig Wittengensteins work. When Eva goes to put on her artificial skin there is a painting of Wittengensteins sister on the wall by Climt. The movie constantly goes over how the mind is both an abstraction of reality (which is what language is) and a series of impulses in direct response to it. Basically both movies use some foreign element to make a study of man (chiefly the mind/language) and it's place in the universe.

I read the short story, seemed a bit unrealistic. It comes down to the aliens writing actually changing time and space. Doesn't really make sense.

Critics rarely mention the quality of cinematography which in the case of "Arrival" was bad to the point of being inconsiderate to the viewer. I read somewhere that the AD Bradford Young was striving for a "mundane" look and he achieved it and more. I got a refund from the first theater because the movie was so washed out and dreary I thought it had to be the projection. Theater number 2 was just as bad. This movie looks and feels dreadful and amateurish, and maybe that's what they were going for, but it is rude and painful on the eyes.
