Hi Elliot. Cheers for the shoutout my friend. Would love you to do a Second Run video special. What a fantastic label! Of the ones you purchased, the only ones I've yet to see are Vampyr Cuaderac and From The Lift To The Road. I'm a big Jess Franco fan so will check it out soonest, ditto Lift. Keep up the great work!
Hey Elliot! Second Run are a label that I don't know much about so I appreciate you showcasing your haul here! I haven't heard of the films you've shown here before but hearing what you had to say about them has made me want to investigate them all further. I think Ikarie XB 1 and The Ear in particular are the two that interest me the most. Great video as always Elliot!
Thanks mate. Second Run really is a great label and I think you'd enjoy some of these titles given what you already collect. Not that we need more labels to collect... 😂
I'm pleased I've found this as I was wondering if you made a Second Run list. Other Second Run titles I'd recommend are The Shop on the High Street, Daisies, Intimate Lighting, The Cremator, A Case of a Rookie Hangman which is a surreal take on Gulliver's Travels, The Miraculous Virgin, Witchhammer, Silence and Cry, and Neon Bull. Another Miloš Forman film I recommend, but it's on Arrow Academy bluray is Closely Observed Trains. This film has a real charm about it and is my favourite film of his. A real gem!
I, like many others have commented have been terrified of adding another label to collect to an ever growing list! However, I have my first two winging their way to me. Neither are in your haul which hopefully will give me more to recommend (or not as the case may be) to you! :) Be nice to get a follow up companion video to your hauls whenever you knock a few titles off the list!
Second Run has always interested me, but I know that if I pick up one of them, I'm going to want them all, and I can't afford another label to collect! I watched The Cremator recently, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was terrific so I highly recommend that! I'm intrigued by the Bill Morrison film too, as I've picked up the BFI box set which I really enjoyed working through! Keep up the great content!
Cheers, Sam. I, too, love The Cremator! That might be my favourite film released by Second Run over here. I hear what you're saying about picking up one and wanting to collect them all. Blu-ray collecting is a dangerous sport!
I have nothing from Second Run yet but I am to amend that this next Arrow sale. I'm interested in Daisies, The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On, Dawson City, Milos Forman, and Mysterious Object since I've never seen an Apichatpong Weerasethakul film and /r/Criterion loves him. I haven't seen Diamonds of the Night yet but if I like it I might double-dip and get both since the Criterion doesn't come with a commentary like the Second Run does. I've never heard of Marc Isaacs but damn in that box looks nice and now I hear it calling my name. Thanks for the video!
Hi. Nice haul there. The Ear is a favourite of mine. Just recently discovered your channel, and I thought "thank god. I must be normal after all, there is at least one other person who collects Blu-Rays as obsessively as me" LOL. So just wanted to say thanks for all the vids you do. I've picked up a bunch of Second Run titles this week myself. Like you say the prices don't come down that often so when they do I tend to go crazy and pick up a lot.
I wonder if they'll release Marketa Lazarová on bluray. This Czech film often comes ranked on top of a lot of lists. I think it's available on criterion in the US.
Hi Elliot, I have never heard of any of those movies 😳 but it's just great to see you show them and speak about them even though you openly admit they are blind buys.
You're going to Dawson City: Frozen Time. It's a story about the recovery of a large cache of silent films, many of which were thought lost. Talk about a happy ending.
These titles sound amazing Elliot! I haven't delved into second run yet (blasphemy I know!) But I will definitely be on the look out for these, Ikarie XB 1, the ear and diamonds of the night all sound really interesting. Especially Ikarie being that it pre-dates 2001 and solaris. I'll be ordering these asap.
I don't think I've heard you mention the Japanese documentary on Second Run called The Naked Army Marches On. Very intense and confrontational discussions from one man's pursuit of the truth on war crimes in the 2nd world war. One of the best I've ever seen and on par with Shoah.
Also, I’ve seen Jess Franco’s Dracula ... don’t remember much other than Christopher Lee was allowed to grow a totally badass Vlad the Impaler-esque goatee. 😂
Great video again mate. I bought around 15 titles during the Arrow Sale, 2 of them were Second Run titles to replace my DVDs. Witchhammer & The Creator. Keep the vids coming my friend as they are inspiring 😊
Hi Elliot! I'm Sami, and I'm a massive fan of your videos. I was wondering if you could make a video of some of your favorite movies in the Masters of Cinema collection. I'm starting to get into them myself and I would like some recommendations as to what I should get next. Anyways, keep on making your great videos and I can't wait to hopefully see your comments on your full blu-ray collection!
Hey Sami, that's so kind of you. Nice to meet you! Yes, for sure. A few people have asked me to talk Masters of Cinema, so I will prep some videos soon!
Awesome stuff again mate, I've got a huge order coming from the arrow sale to, also like you I've picked up some second run and third window blind buys
Great vid! Why are there so many good labels out there? Not enough time to watch or indeed money to buy everything that interests me. I'd love to hear your thoughts and make say a top 3 recommendation of these titles once you have watched them all. Couple of intriguing Arrow Video titles announced today as well. Need to save some cash for those June/July criterion releases.
I’ve seen both Diamonds of the Night and XB 1 and really loved both, hope you enjoy them !! Loving the content Elliot definitely right now my favourite channel keep it up 👍
That is a great haul which did not dissapoint. I dont own any second run films but i know i will start with the karel zeman films. I also watched my first peter greeneaway film the cook the thief his wife and her lover which was great. Keep up the great videos! Stay safe!
Yes, the Karel Zeman releases are a great start! I haven't actually seen that Greenaway film, even though I know it's his favourite. I know there are issues with the currently available UK blu-ray. Many people said it was a bad disc. I'd hope Criterion could look at releasing some Greenaway in the future!
Elliot, I share your appreciation for the czech new wave, I'm guessing you already seen Valerie and her week of wonders so I will give you another recommendation which is better than cocteau's beauty and the beast, and far darker: *Panna a netvor*
hey. is ur channel about reviewing movies and unobxing dvds? i'm a bit confused about ur channel from watching ur 2000 live video and some of ur other videos. btw congrats on 2000! hope u r monetized soon
Nice haul, friend. Still waiting for my orders from the sale. Maybe you could share your thoughts on the blind buys once you've seen them? I'm particularly interested in your thoughts on the films of Marc Isaacs and Ikarie, as I missed out on those two in the sale.
I will most definitely do some kind of update on these in the future, as lots of people have asked for this. Thanks for much for the continued support, my friend!
Vampir Cuadecuc sounds intriguing I remember when I was far to young seeing Jess Francos Female Vampire on the horror channel early hours of the morning all I remember was a naked women walking around the forest I wonder how his other films compare.
I think Diamonds of the Night is a lot less linear and, dare I say this of Tarkovsky, relatively straight forward as Ivan's Childhood. There is for instance a fair degree of disagreement as to what actually happens at the end of the Czech movie. But yep both are obviously definitely well worth capturing, although I will confess to being less in love with Tarkovsky than most people I know! Otherwise I've got a couple of the others and in particular agree with you about Milos Forman. PS It's no good asking me about Czech pronunciation - I can't manage French and they spent years trying to drum that into me!
Ah, very interesting. I will have to come back to you with my interpretation of the ending when I watch it! Someone should do videos on how to pronounce filmmakers' names!
I've read that the SR blu-ray of the brilliant 'Valerie and Her Week of Wonders' is one to avoid. A poor transfer, apparently. The Criterion edition is the one to get.
Ijust bought that second run release of Valerie and after first viewing I'm really conflicted. I loved the imagery/Cinematography but I've only the faintest guesses what the storyline was about. I'm going to give it a second watch next week trying to figure if the movie works for me or only it's cinematography. Anyhow it is worth a watch even as a dreamlike experience
Watched my Ikarie yesterday but I was so early on the sale, the blu ray kept coming up as sold out. So I got the DVD! But thankfully I'm still happy with it and I was incredibly impressed with it. Still surprises me how good the communists were with filmmaking, so much better than the west with ideas at that time with sci fi. Think it's nearest rival at the time was forbidden planet! Miles better than that film which don't get me wrong is still good. But this actually evaluated the fears of meeting another race and the wrongs of 20th century incredibly well and interestingly.
For a minute I thought second run means the second printing of the movie after the movie either goes out of print or is released in a different (or no frills) packaging Are you planning to have your dad watch these foreign movies and give us his take on them?
Hey Christopher, yes it was through Hermes. Mine came fairly quickly. It might be worth checking up with Arrow/Hermes about your delivery. Thanks for watching, my friend :)
My friend, I would like to purchase the second run box sets : polish cinema Classics, the Frantisek Vasil collection ,the Miklos Jancso collection and the Chezchoslovak new wave collection but unfurtunatelly they were not included in the Arrow sale. Do you have them?
Hi Juan. No, I do not have any of these. I think they are DVD only? I do have some Vasil and Jancso films separately though. I love Marketa Lazarova :)
Yes! The Cremator by Juraj Herz is one of my favourite films of all time. It has just had a Criterion release in the US, and I believe that disc has the edge, but if you can pick up the Second Run blu-ray, it's well worth. I also love Intimate Lighting and Black peter on the label. The Karel Zeman films are brilliant too :)
Great video Elliot. Thank you. I’m also a big fan of Forman and Czech films. After you watch Loves of a Blonde, check out this Forman interview which is included in the Criterion DVD of the movie. It is fabulous. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HZB8US6EHz4.html
Hey man. Great video. I got my own Arrow video haul coming up. I hope you will check out my channel one day. Until i mostly talked about Walking Dead stuff. But i'm working on expanding my channel with other stuff.
