Thanks for the fine lecture. I enjoyed it because A) it was presented humbly, without ever leaning one way or another as to which way of thinking is "correct" and B) the historical references gave us a rare view into high level thinking processes with details on how this complicated topic has been debated about over the past several decades. Unlike politics, good science keeps pushing to get to the bottom of things without ever trying to sell anything or preach one belief or another. Well presented facts speak for themselves.

I agree also, Professor Susskind is so so well versed. I'd really like to see him explain, the way he does, the twin universe theory. With the contention that the black holes actually radiate a force of spacetime faster than the speed of light, a wormhole, to the middle of nowhere between galaxy clusters. Source of the MOND. The matter universe is what we see and the antimatter universe is dimensionally hidden and located in the middle of nowhere. Dimensionally hidden because both universes are created from a very very old universe that is on verge of becoming so unstable that any perturbance wil cause it to biforcate between hot and cold. Ah something like that. A string of energy that twists and pinches off. However it happens, something like pair production occurs with dimensional or hyperdimensional hiding the one half the antimatter half, of the two. universes. Seen from the outside they'd be discreet objects like blackholes. Outside of our universe I'd suppose. These objects and shadow objects, not sure exactly what a white hole is. Are the guide post in a way. The photon sphere has an infinite number of possibilities as does the inverse shadow object, our reality is just one of the possible realities. So like electron shells the universe objects and it's shadow determine not how many different possibilities there are but the range of possibilities there are. So I'd like to see all a avenues of the theory and contentions explored. Including a hyperdimensional frame work that connects blackholes to the empty expansive space and also connects them to the anti universe with the mond explored also. All with the idea that the one universe we see is it. Everything should be in the universe. The resonate frequency need to be fig

@@jchorn7180If a Boltzmann brain existed then the very first thing it would do is recognize its own loneliness and then replicate itself to make another entity like it. Thus: the Hindu Egyptian creation myths, telling of a self-created entity, creating other entities so it can understand itself. We are just the ultimate culmination of that. A single brain can't reflect itself to interpret what it actually is, it needs other brains to be able to look at it. Modern religion deliberately denies the fact that God is both Man and Woman in equal parts.

Time is the asymmetry of self-resonance. It emerges from the fact that the universe can’t perfectly cancel itself out, because it doesn’t stop changing.
@ayoubsbai6339
@ayoubsbai6339 8 месяцев назад
Could you elaborate more on the ''self-resonance'' part? I am not sure if you meant the principe of detailed balance breaking there? Where time emerges from the fact that "forward" process doesn't get cancelled out by the "reverse" process, due to asymmetry in free energy and work.
@anywallsocket
@anywallsocket 8 месяцев назад
@@ayoubsbai6339 personally I believe quantum phenomena are highly self-resonant phenomena - you can think of it like a perpetual Quine if you’re familiar with the computational metaphor. Their self resonance means their spin networks are symmetric and so there is no preferred time direction or spatial connection - these are strongly isolated phenomena which do negligibly interact with their environment. Take a BEC for example, I can cool helium way down and it will liquify before becoming a superfluid. In which case its fermions combine to bosonic states - spins cancel and it exhibits self-resonant wholistic properties. The wavefunction spreads as does, I argue, spacetime itself, which is a highly ‘entangled’ state, meaning one side of the box affects the other immediately. Now heat it back up, the spins begin to misalign, and it starts to behave more classically as the wavefunction exhibits disagreements in phase, allowing local causality to act in predictable ways. It is this environmental interaction that disallows perfect self resonance and imbues asymmetry in the system giving it a preferred causal ordering - ie flow direction in time, simultaneously stitching space together. Like an imperfect Quine that can never catch up to itself as it attempts self-computation (resonance). That’s just my take anyway.
@ayoubsbai6339
@ayoubsbai6339 8 месяцев назад
I could add that time is the result of the transition from strong duality to weak duality between the forward and reverse processes. Akin to fragmentation of a mirror into lost parts that can't be, computationally, reassembled to restore the symmetry (or strong duality) between opposing processes.
@anywallsocket
@anywallsocket 8 месяцев назад
@@ayoubsbai6339 yes in quantum and classical mechanics, time is reversible -- knowing the laws and the state at any time will give you all other states, forward and backward. time in these models is known as a free variable, and a better way to think about it is actually timelessness. classical and quantum mechanics have no time built into their structure if you associate time with the asymmetry itself experience in real life, ie a directionality or flow.

This brings me again to the idea of time and space displacements being equal. We always have only the eternal existence of "all states"( stealing the idea from Julian Barbour) but it's our brain which can only progress, register, experience with moving forward. It's like a kind of Brownian movement through all these possible states and backward jumps occur but can't be registered.

If a reversal of the arrow of time, requires all molecules and particles to exactly retrace their paths… the question arises, would anyone even notice if it actually happened? Random moments could rewind and replay constantly, and no one would necessarily know the difference, or that it had occurred.
@skwalka6372
@skwalka6372 8 месяцев назад
Yes, if time reversed, even for a short time, we would notice. In daily life, all phenomena involving diffusion, such as brewing coffee, would take longer and you would wonder why. As you walk you would notice objects moving ahead of you rather than past you without any associated reversal of inertial forces, etc.
@karlmiller5009
@karlmiller5009 8 месяцев назад
That likely depends on whether consciousness is fundamental (idealist philosophy) or an emergent property of the universe (materialist philosophy). If we would notice, then consciousness is likely independent of all matter. If we couldn’t notice, then likely consciousness is an emergent property of matter and would have no way of experiencing the rewind. I tend to be an idealist, and believe consciousness is fundamental, so I hypothesize that we would notice the rewind.
@REDPUMPERNICKEL
@REDPUMPERNICKEL 8 месяцев назад
@@karlmiller5009 I think you will agree that movement is not matter and that since movement is relative, gross movement is also *not a property* of any single material object. Nevertheless and self evidently, the existence of matter is prerequisite and necessary for the odd and immaterial existence of movement. In effect, no objects no movement. Put another way, matter is the 'substrate' of movement. If it should actually be the case that thought is constituted from immaterial movement (thereby giving thought its immaterial flavour) we see that matter would then also be the 'substrate' of thought, necessarily. Now, if we compare your brain as you read this and your brain frozen to a temperature just above absolute zero what difference might be found? You say there would be no difference and you find the film, 'Vanilla Sky', logically flawless. Yes?
@karlmiller5009
@karlmiller5009 8 месяцев назад
@@REDPUMPERNICKEL So I have not seen Vanilla Sky. However, I am unsure of your argument. Matter is clearly not the only substrate of movement. Energy, such as light, can also move. What’s more, both energy and matter can pop in and out of existence in space-time as well. So perhaps energy, matter, and relative movement are all emergent properties of space-time. However, even space-time is likely an emergent property, as the quantum gravity research of physicist Nima Arkani-Hamed at Princeton seems to indicate. While there are definitely neural correlates of consciousness, I tend to believe that consciousness is fundamental until and unless we find some other deeper structure from which everything emerges. The universe and everything in it may well be a sort of “dream” or “simulation” of an infinite fundamental awareness. Religious people have seemed to have faith in as much for millennia. Idealism is also more logically sound than materialism. I'd recommend watching the excellent videos from the RU-vid channel, Consciousness Squared. The videos do a good job of explaining the inconsistency of the assumptions made in materialism. I recommend starting with their "1) Knowledge refutes Materialism" video. I wish you all the best.

@karlmiller5009 consciousness being independent of matter is the stupidest popular idea I’ve heard in awhile. Matter is what we are, to say our consciousness doesn’t emerge from it is just backwards. It's clear Consciousness emerges from matter as fire emerges from fuel or as programs arise on a computer if you prefer a more complex comparison)

I like the structure of this topic. I have given 20+ yrs of layman thought to time. The universe "is" expanding at the time those light waves that tell us so we're observed. I presently think that time is a Doppler "delay", a predicament of the entire observable universe. That we are in a protective nitch where w/, you might say, a back draft of energy allows conditions for what they call the 2nd law of thermodynamics can be reversed. Phylosophically life is uncomfortable w/ itself because in many ways it is a "foreign", temporary condition.

Actually Time is the distance traveling in the orbit of the circuit of light into matter back into light. God Almighty explains that in the beginning He created light that light turns into crystal specifically tourmaline by photonic geometric structure changing by the frequency of the light photon as it slows in its vortex orbit. After it slows to a triangular photonic structure a faster light photon traversing it loses energy in that step and by the law of thermodynamics the transformation of that lost energy causes the slower triangular photon to crystallize into subatomic carbon tourmaline. It also due to polarization of light creates a dual spintronic force people call magnetism. By spintronic coagulation particles grow all the way into black holes where the particles are deconstructed back into direct current light. God's universe exists as a repeating photonic vortex matrix eddy of alternating current light slowing down in a viable propagation of it's vortex matrix. The consummation coming foretold is the birth of a new begotten di-men-sion of which many have come and passed. Yet of God created dimensions does the knowledge of the past dimensions transfer as inheritance to the coming alpha of the consummations Omega. P.S. I don't like when people say time is a one-way street but space isn't because you can move in 3 dimensions. Space is as much as a one-way street as time is. You just need to look at it differently. No matter which direction you move, it'll always be a positive distance. You can't move a negative distance just like you can't do something in a negative amount of time. You can't move backwards in space or time. Both are a one-way street.

Self evidently, out of an infinity of possible directions, the instantaneous relative movement vector of a material object points in *one direction* only. Since the concept of time is derived from observations of objects' relative movements, it should come as no surprise that the concept of time has the 'flavour' of directionality. For time (as an actuality beyond mere concept) to be 'symmetrical', all objects would have to exhibit a second movement vector pointing opposite the first one. The impossibility of an object to remain one object while moving in opposite directions, both in 'reality' and imagination, should be abundantly obvious. Time is one aspect of how we think about the totality of objects moving relatively and not a mysterious objective 'something' in the universe. In short, time is a concept only.

One odd thing about the supposition that we are inside a black hole, our visible horizon is due to space expanding, thus making the stars farther apart; whereas the event horizon around a black hole is due to the conformation of spacetime pulling things in a way we call gravity. The reasons for their invisibility to us are quite different: One can expand faster than the speed of light, the other can't. At our visible horizon, nothing special happens. Planets, gravitation and velocity all behave normally; even tho it was billions of years ago - so it might be different in the way matter is clustered, but not much in terms of laws of physics. At the center of our visible horizon, there is no known singularity.

@@fitnesspoint2006 consciousness is the hardest one, but other are just a human constructs too. Anything you can define doesn’t exist in reality but inside your mind model. Our perception system is extremely limited, so we have to quantize the world around as it seems, but it’s silly to call it certain and not probabilistic. Social concepts like free will, freedom, justice, empathy, and others are the most non existant things, but we need to hold to that illusion in order to keep a society as a living organism, at least before there will be another more superior form of life compared to humans.

so basically 1. If the universe never ends, then any form of sentience is almost definitely one that arose from random fluctuation (since random fluctuations happen infinite times if you wait long enough) 2. Any form of sentience that manifests from random fluctuation is almost definitely just a momentary brain hallucinating it's alive, rather than an actual complex life form in an ecosystem 3. If you aren't just a Boltzmann brain then our universe must have an end (to prevent unlimited random fluctuation), but dark energy seems to ensure the universe will exist and have quantum fluctuations forever

Could anyone perhaps help me understand why in the model of Boltzman of the universe in a box there is a line through the space of possible states and not just random scatetred spots ? In other words, why can't the universe jump from one state through a random and completely different other state but 'evolves' only from one state to a nearby state?

If entropy decreases locally like in your refrigerator, this means that globally, the entropy will still increase. In your refrigerator home, time still flows, and the entropyy is not reversed, just slowed down. You need to reverse entropy for the entire universe.

Then we come to another type of Lambda; with this hyperlambda, we are measuring the ratio of bubbles that spawn per bubble for the duration of a bubble's existence. If it's bigger than 1, then on average each bubble will spawn more than one bubble and the number of bubbles grows forever, if it's less than 1, then eventually existence will run out of bubbles or otherwise hit a finite number of bubbles all stagnant and infertile. Well, I guess the proper way to phrase it would be we would be measuring, if somehow that could be measured. I'm not sure if that leads to any conclusion about the arrow of time though.

Imagine the rebound of the cosmos (the reverse unfolding, or direction of time that embodies the anti-entropy). We are born from the state of death out of the earth/fire/decomposition and make our way toward the mother's womb, and she in turn begins the path toward her mother's womb, etc. Everything combines toward the source, be it life or energy. Contrary to this general pattern...in this "backward-time" direction there is still a split...the fertile embryo of conception splits into the egg/sperm of pre-conception and divides into two entities (the child is the singular entity then splits into the divided source of binary parents). The parents in turn are split into their parents' divided beings all the way back until whether we are splitting or combining gets lost in the mix. If we go backward, we are perpetually divided into our parents' parent's parents...some overlap over the generations I'm sure...and thinking in this backward manner is definitely discombobulating...but maybe I've at least touched on how our perceptions become twisted when attempting to reverse our direction in time as living conscious beings...we consume the symmetry of paradox as it consumes us, and logic/reason is shown to only be a flat representation of the whole picture.

Your theory is probably wrong." Alternatively, you may have found an anomaly within the current scientific paradigm. Either way, something _is_ wrong with our cosmology. For now, I think I prefer Penrose's conformal cyclic cosmology (CCC), or some variation of it, to multiverse theory. It's all about perspective. However, I don't think of scientific laws as eternal and unchanging. The use of the word "law" is misleading. Everything is subject to change over time, and that includes scientific "laws". However, change may happen over so much time that for most practical purposes they give the impression of being fixed.

Imagine that time is the expansion rate of the 3 D space we live in. Imagine that is the reason why time is the arrow, because space is only expanding and not contracting outside of black holes. Imagine that gravity slows the expansion rate around a mass. That could be imagined as the explanation for the relativity of time, because the expansion rate of space is relative to the position of the observer. Spaghettification is an example of growing entropy but the singularity would be the least possible state of entropy, affected only by Hawking Radiation. Imagine that?

Why do nobody wonder where and how time is created. I think there should be a machine. A little like a pendulum clock. The pendulum is not indicating time but it drive the mechanism that show the time. An analogy would be the empty space , it is in motion ( kind of boiling looking very close ) and is the random movement that drive time. Time is indicated by the objects that is influenced by the random movements. So the empty space has no time but just random " noise" coupled to particles that indicate the passage of time. So time is neither quantum nor continous. Another thing is why is physic described using time and not the speed of time or the corresponding noise spectrum?

Perhaps time is a result of things not being infinite. Like absence of light is dark however in the dimensional space. It is the creating segments of “now” that are opposite of space that “always is” or another way to think about it would be if there was no “space” then travelling left or right or up or down would be meaningless it is the creation of space that gives rise to left right up or down to describe that dimensions qualities.

About exponentially expanding universe: Why should there be something special quantum fuzz going on at the margin of an observable universe that is not happening anywhere else in the observable universe? Or is the explanation in that it (observable universe) gets smaller and smaller at ever increasing rate and this margin acts as an event horizon like in the black hole? Still, the observable universe is different for different "observers"; I mean "someones" margin of the observable universe is well inside someone else observable universe...How could there be quantum energy at "someone's" margin while that region is not horizon for "someone" else and that "someone" don't "see" this quantum energy? Anyway, what happens when eventually horizon becomes Planck lenght?

It seems to me that entropy always increases in this universe because the universe is expanding which means there are always more ways to be disordered than ordered, so if you reverse time, you basically contract the universe. I’m not sure why this natural occurrence is being put into question, the asymmetry seems to occur because of the expansion of the universe, which means entropy and dark energy may be related.

Then what we would have is over a vast time more and more of these potential universes would be whittled down. Which would have a dissipating effect in itself. There has to hit a point to where you don’t have enough mass to have another fork in the road, no?

I think the problem is.that theories are devised that fail to provide a fundamental explanation of time as an actual component of the universe. This why people find problems paradoxes etc. in entropy, expansion of universe, unification of gravity with quantum. What if time is itself why there is expansion at all, and without expansion there is no time, no space, no particles, nothing. In other words, we need to START with time not come up with somw theory first and then either ignore time or try to fit it into the theory after the fact.
