AMAZING news today from Arrow Video, they dropped the details and put up their much anticipated Shawscope Volume 3 set for pre-order in both the UK and USA!
This time around the set leans heavily into Shaw's Wu Xia movies and Arrow have put together a fantastic lineup of movies once again, including several real fan favourites!
Join me as I run through the titles and the details we know so far,
As with Volumes 1& 2 I'll be doing individual reviews for each disc, each movie and all the special features when the set drops later this year ( 25th November is the release date)

I ordered as soon as it was announced. I am so happy that Chor Yuen is finally getting some attention and love. Intimate confessions of a Chinese courtesan is amazing and at times uncomfortable to watch. I am glad they are finally giving Ti Lung a spotlight too, as well as showing a greater range of Wuxia. November is an awful long way away. Cheers for the video mate!

Arrow don’t take funds until they ship out stock, but don’t expect this to sell out as fast as the Bruce Lee set did, so you should be good to wait and save up :)

Interesting roster of films for volume 3. I was always under the assumption it would be more horror cult films, which wouldn’t be my cup of tea in terms of SB. So glad that didn’t happen yet…

the horror thing was internet speculation that caught hold, if i remember right the Arrow producer James Flower only said it would have less of a focus on Kung Fu, and at the same time also said there would be more Chor Yuen films included as Yuen had just passed away before Volume 2 got released and folks were asking if any of his movies were on Vol2

Preordered yesterday from Unobstructed View as I saw that One-Armed Swordsman trilogy is included as well as spaghetti-western themed The Magic Blade and other Gu Long novel based Ti Lung-starred films and some other Chor Yuen films. Yes I’m glad that Chor Yuen deserves a lot of attention especially Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan which was later remade in a following decade as Lust for Love for a Chinese Courtesan that Chor Yuen also directed. Wish the third volume set includes Chor Yuen’s breakthrough comedy film The House of 72 Tenants which was Shaw Brothers first film to be shot in Cantonese and has been a box office hit back then in Hong Kong since Mandarin has been a dominant language for Hong Kong films in the 1970s. The Bastard Swordsman being wacky at times was based on one of my favourite RTV/ATV shows Reincarnated also starring Norman Chu (though he appeared in the first half of the show until he was replaced by another actor for the rest of the episodes), which also spawned a sequel called Dragon Strikes.

Can't wait for this. Quite a few of these I've never seen. When I got vol two I said to myself "if they do a vol three, it should be swordplay movies. Not a bad line up But I would've have preferred a few Derek yet movies like the supreme swordsman and full moon scimitar etc. But nonetheless, happy to get another vol.

Same here mate, I’m sure they ( or Shout) will get to Derek Yee eventually. think they stacked vol3 with Chor Yuen as so many people were asking for his titles to be included after his death just before vol2 dropped.

I feel you mate, it’s always a little painful when that happens, but 88’s Shaw series laid the groundwork for all the other U.K. and US labels to follow. It’s the only numbered Bluray series I went out of my way to pickup every single title of.

which titles of his are you still waiting on? Almost all of his heavy hitters have been released already. 88 Films are putting out The Shadow Boxing as a standalone in September and beyond that it's really only Godfather of Canton, Tales of A Eunoch, Treasure Hunters, Cat Vs Rat and Marco Polo that I can think of that are still in need of a bluray upgrade in terms of Gordon Liu flicks..

maybe! the 88 films release is OOP now and Arrow have included two movies ( Killer Constable on Vol3 and Mighty Peking Man on Vol1) that 88 previously put out between the various sets in the UK and also released two others ( come drink with me & 8 Diagram Pole Fighter) as standalones releases in the USA.

There are actually six shout shaw brothers sets ( so far) four volumes, a brave archer set and a ti lung/ David Chiang set. No duplication with any titles on the Arrow boxsets at all. They’re not as nicely presented or as densely packed with extras as the Arrow boxes but there are some great titles on them .

Wish I could jump on the pre-order sale, but sadly wont have that kinda money (as I'm Canadian and the U.S. conversion is astronomical) for a while. Luckily it isn't releasing until late November. Maybe a late X-Mas gift? 😅😅😅

don't pressure yourself to get in right at release day mate! volume 2 is still available easily and it came out two years ago, the longer you wait, the more affordable it'll become! I tend to sell a bunch of titles I know i won't watch again anytime a big boxset comes around, I have limited space for my collection, so have to keep it under a certain level. selling lots is the only way i can afford to get the new releases that i do cover here.

@TheFanaticalDragon I won't lie, it does bug me a bit not being able to catch up with everyone else in the Martial Arts Cinema Circle when it comes to these box sets, but I also know it's unreasonable to think I can keep up with everything. Especially on a modest budget. Although, the wife did say she would like to see us get it for Xmas or so.
