First reviewer to talk about the excess torque on take-off. I've struggled with this, but I've sort of minimized this by shimming the landing gear to tilt them forward.

Hey Brian, thanks for the straight up honest review of the Arrows P-51. One thought to mention, is that all of your efforts of working through this model are what model planes is about. We have been spoiled with great innovations over the years with the progress of technology. True modeling used to take time and refinement of each model to get it to a state of fly ability. Modeling is a craft. Thank you for sharing your insights and experience with us all. A bit of history. I started on control line with my father and uncle. Thanks.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
You're 100% right, and we are totally spoiled these days, which makes my life easier, but also makes a plane that's rock solid, but requires even the smallest amount of work, to SEEM, in comparison to be no-good....I choose to reject this notion. This plane is great, but does require a bit of effort to work through the battery choice and CG. Hope this message wasn't misunderstood. Thanks for being here with us Jeff!

i used a 12" metal ruler heated on the stove to slightly expand to opening. the roof of the cavity is thin so be careful up there. the battery cavity floor is thicker and will tolerate more. i believe that melting is better than removal. be conservative with the heat till you figure out how hot. a slow melt at a lower temp is safer than an impatiently fast melt with a hotter ruler

Brian it's real easy to open the battery pocket to except a 4s. Old butter knife , bend it and heat it up with a propane torch. I used a thin piece of sheet metal and plyers to hold it. Melted a little at a time until perfect. Added a nice layer of white duck tape so it's slick . Easy to install and remove battery. I fly mine old school. No AS3X or safe. I even pulled the tail servo and fabricated a longer servo arm. Hogged out a lot of foam to give myself lots of tail and rudder travel. I also installed metal gear aileron servos. Awesome Flying but still takes good reflexes to land on a short runway.

Brian, excellent work by you and the camera crew, as usual. Just to keep every new viewer from asking, maybe it should say somewhere in your video description: " YES, the Eflite June Nite P-51 is easier to fly than the Arrows Mustang." Personally, I was interested in the Arrows for its size and transportation advantage over my June Nite, but I'll take the better flying plane any day, even if it means having to call a UPS truck to drive me to the flying field...
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC Год назад
I don't want to take anything away from the Arrows P-51 1.1m - it has many strengths, but it is harder to fly and harder to setup than the 1.2m from Eflite. That being said, it's not bad flying, it just takes more tweaking to get it up to snuff with it's bigger sister from another mother ;)

Great timing and great work Brian, Im seriously looking at this Mustang and cant seem to find any YT video other than yours that shows the quirks this warbird has. Just got the hang of my Dynam Bf109 1.20m so you could say Im familiar with P-factor, but it seems like this one has a stronger tendency. I dont remember having to use that much rudder to overcome it. Just the same I think I will get this one cause its so "purrty"😊
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
I was very surprised just how strong the P-Factor was, and as for "quirks" - we try not to cover for any of these things, but rather take them on, and fix them so you can see if the effort was worth while - I suspect you agree, it was ;)

Hi Brian, I wanted to add a tip on the Arrows P-51. I measured the Spektrum 3S 2200 Smart battery and found a Spektrum G2 4S 1800 Smart battery with the exact same dimensions, but slightly heavier. How did a SMART 2200 G2 fit? A 30c would probably be 10% smaller. This is like a 3-4 year old model I think, so not a big surprise it took some time to set up properly.. How were the retracts, servos, etc? This looks great.

arrows retracts are tough with relatively big retract motors. i have arrows Detroit miss and an earlier version in old crow. my old crow is flown with reckless abandon now has a hotter motor and has been smashed to bits a dozen times and the retracts still work. my fms racers are well cared for creampuffs and the retracts have intermittent failure issues and the struts are weak

Hey Brian. If you took off with the receiver in SAFE mode, wouldnt that prevent the P factor from being a problem?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Not enough control input to offset....there's the moment when airspeed makes controls go "Alive" while the SAFE and AS3X will help, they won't totally compensate for the immense P-Factor, especially if you don't have enough rudder.

Brian, I got myself one of these after watching the latest Top Gun movie. The P-51 shown is so gorgeous, I couldn’t resist. Now, after breaking it in half twice on grass field takeoffs, I’ve opted to watch your experience only to find out that I should’ve watched these before! 😂. The plane sucks to takeoff on grass fields. It doesn’t give time to correct and although between all those flights I had luck with some takeoffs, they sure weren’t pretty. I’ve opened up the foam to fit a 3200 4S in there, but the one thing I see nobody talking about is the ESC and motor handling that much more voltage. Using a wattmeter, I measured 50 amps at peak RPM. The ESC on this plane is rated for 40. What are your thoughts?
@BrianPhillipsRC

My thoughts - Use it till it catches on fire, then replace it ;) (Seriously) Now that you have the CG bettered, I suspect the grass ops are greatly improved???

@@BrianPhillipsRC before flying it, I might replace the ESC with one from a Timber X I gave up on. That should at least take care of that. My fear is having the ESC fail, making the rest of the electronics fail on me. Our field (Beattie Field in RI) is quite close to the Highway, thus safety is strictly enforced (with good reason).

@@BrianPhillipsRC I just managed to re-maiden my Arrows P-51 after making the proposed changes... Definitely made a HUGE difference! First! How does this plane compare to the Eflite 1.2m Mustang or the 1.1m FMS air racers?
@seanmolloy9422
@seanmolloy9422 2 года назад
i have all that you mention. e flite 1.2 is easier to fly with a fatter airfoil but arrows is much faster on 4s and a 2 blade 10x10. i find it to be a more advanced pilot plane with quicker response and roll rate. i absolutely love the Dage Red. it is smokin fast and easy to land but the tires are rock hard . the fms landing gear strut is weak. the retract motors are small, weak, lame, prone to premature failure. both my Dago and my Voo Doo retracts have intermittent failure and the struts bend too easy but im in love with how they fly and land. they are very light wing loading.

@@6.5x14 am unsure of how a larger ESC would change speed performance. did you change to a more aggressive pitch 2 blade prop? that would increase current draw . 4 blade looks awesome but creates more drag and current draw than a similar sized 2 blade.

Eflite is better, but it's also more pricey. The FMS is crazy FASSSST. This plane is a smaller June Nite. Good choice, but it is not quite as good in my opinion. Eflite does a great job, and Arrows has been great too!

Corsair is harder to fly, but easier to battery up. They both took more effort to get flying well than virtually any other Arrows product we reviewed, but they are good planes, and worth the small amount of effort, albeit out of the ordinary, from their line of quality planes.

This plane regardless of a heavier battery will probably stall on take off if on a grass strip. So much up elevator will be needed to avoid nose over that takeoff will be at too low an airspeed and unless you are quick to kick opposite rudder instead of an instinctive right aieleron, the left wing is going to eat grass. This is typical of the Arrows warbirds line up. Don't even attempt grass.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
I can't say I disagree. Super short, think golf green grass, would probably work, but anything else would be an issue.

So they sell a hot wire at Walmart in the craft department that is around $10. It is just a straight wire on a handle and it works fantastic for doing stuff like getting inside a fuselage to melt foam away!
@BrianPhillipsRC

You can get it in that spot? Had another subscriber suggest melting away the foam with an old knife...and I used to used 20/1000" shims, since I have a bunch of them from work projects.

Servos suck ! Want to see how you got a 4s in it. I had to hog out the rudder servo area to get max throw out of rudder. It can't even come close to book specs. 😕 I'm flying it old school. No AS3X on 3 s.

@@BrianPhillipsRC Take your time pulling the tail servo. It's also glued in. But once you fabricate the throw to get plenty of throw and shim the servo wheel stub the authority on the tail is real good. I also replaced the tail servo with a higher quality one as well as both Aileron servos with full metal gear from Amazon. This bird became what it was ment to be. Even flying it without AS3X / Safe. Its the P-51 platform that just flies poorly. Severe P factor makes impossible to flat turn right & gives severe throttle yaw coupling. Non streamline stubby body & wings make it touchy & unpredictable. Politely called MAUVERABLE ..I guess since WW2 P51 pilots themself didn't know which way it was going, how Germans figure & that made it a success. I prefer Spitfire everyday over P-51, though it has its own idiosyncrasies. It not being a US plane, unfortunately never get any small Spitfires, let alone 2s brushless.
