It’s a great move for us. Easy to forget that Sterling was England’s best player at one point and he is only 29, an age a footballer would be considered at their peak. Trossard has been a spectacular success, similar age. Sterling will be highly motivated and I look forward to seeing him contribute.
I didn’t love the Trossard deal, I was proven wrong I didn’t love the Raya deal, I was proven wrong Didn’t love the Haverts deal, I was proven wrong I don’t particularly love the Sterling deal but I am more than happy to be wrong yet again
Edu and Arsenal strengthened the best defense in the league and made great strides in addressing the weakness on the left by signing Calafiori, Merino and Sterling.
I'm actually really excited to see what Sterling brings to the squad. He looked really sharp during training and ready to go. Fingers crossed it works out for Sterling and Arsenal.
@DangerfieldChris the miss against Brighton showed he's not an elite striker . Hence why we are still looking at bringing a top striker mate . He scores goals because he's in a team that creates alot of chances . For me he's the backup no 9 and no 8. We brought him to play in the 8 role lol
I hated Sterling at Liverpool, hated him more at City, hated him at Chelsea. Why? Because he was a pain in our backside with his touch and speed but now I suddenly love the guy and the price is right.
Havertz might end up being a top 5 striker in Europe under Arteta… believe 👌 I’m mostly concerned about midfield as an Odegaard or Rice injury and I think our level could drop quite a bit. We just need to keep our fingers crossed. I’d love to see Zinchenko given a midfield role in cups to see how he does!
There is so much nonsense from other podcasts about this being a disastrous transfer window. We managed the exit of Ramsdale, ESR and Nketiah with dignity and class. We addressed the criticism that Edu wasn't good at selling by smashing the club's income record for a single window.
Hi Charles, I agree completely with your remarks about Martinelli on the right wing against Everton last season. His performance was a revelation. As a right footed player this is perhaps not surprising. The key point is that Martinelli thrived on playing closer to Odegaard. The angled little passes behind the fullback allowed Martinelli to come on to the ball at speed and repeatedly deliver dangerous crosses. This is exactly what Havertz needs with his heading ability and his timed arrival in the six yard box. With Martinelli struggling a little on the left wing we need to see more of him on the right.
There are basically two ways of looking at the midfield/forward squad coverage: 1. Worried that we're a bit thin if we have a few injuries. 2. Excited that Nwaneri (and to a lesser extent, Lewis-Skelly) should get some meaningful minutes. I think both perspectives are valid...
Sterling is good. He has been at a Chelsea side that has no stability yet he has managed some decent numbers. It's going to be Interesting to see what he can do with stability, will to win and the coaching of Mikel. I want Zinny in midfield. Timber too looks sharp enough to play infield.
While I would love an exciting signing like Williams Arteta talks about small margins making the difference this year. There is potential to massively improve our left side and that is what Arteta and Edu have done. We scored plenty of goals last season but we're targeted down our left. Making this stronger could well be the difference this year in making us a bigger threat down the left but also opening up space on the right.
In a slow transfer window or international lull the online space can do your head in a bit. I'm personally grateful to Charles and others at the generally positive and level-headed end of the spectrum spectrum otherwise my mental health would suffer. 😊
Backup for Odegaard is my worry, he got hurt in the brighton game, thankfully doesnt look bad but we dont have fabio vieira now, i do agree he needs somewhere to develop and get game time but its still a worry if martin gets injured
A front 3 of Saka, Sterling and Martinelli sounds like a winner to me. Havertz when we got him was poor in midfield because of the Chelsea numbing (see Dilbert!) wiping out his confidence, but playing as our striker got his confidence back and that is why he looked good recently in midfield.
I don’t buy the whole “we’re short on forwards thing. We now have 6 top forwards which is the same as liverpool and more than City have! A top striker is not a priority at all right now while havertz is performing so well. And what team has better rotational options for 9 than Jesus and Trossard? Next summer we should be going for a top winger to replace Sterling.
It keeps crossing my mind that Zinny would make a really good 6, his vision is good, he can pass well quick enough for that position, astute enough. Defensive skills are above average and he has thatx factor that sixes need. turning risky possession into a hollywood ball. I would give it a go. Nwaneri is Odegard's backup. He is so very good that he needs to be played in a variety of positions to egde him into the first team. He is going to be an arsenal great. Martinelli is a class player, if he spends a few weeks in a dip, don't worry... this is so normal for attacking players. He has the right mix of skills and the senior players around to help him get through this blip.
Hey Charles. A bit of concern on when Jesus is gonna return with Tierney also training back now. Nevertheless, i don't think Arteta will put Jesus straight back to the starting lineup for the NLD even if he was fit because he didn't play much football recently. Kind of a shame if Havertz have to drop back to No.8 again.
Unpopular opinion but I think we’ve improved the squad more this summer than last summer. Yeah what we did this window isn’t as exciting as signing a £100M player but last season our main issue was that left hand side and we’ve plugged those holes this window. We now have 2 players for each position who Arteta at least somewhat trusts. That was not the case at all last season! I feel like most people are incapable of applying context. We were told early on that there wouldn’t be any major big money signings and the PSR stuff would effect the market as a whole. And that has 100% been the case when you look at the lack of business by all the big clubs. So contextually I think it was a fantastic window.
Just saw Emi Buendia scored for Villa’s U21 team do you remember the outcry when didn’t sign him, luckily we waited for Ødegaard. Any other meltdowns you remember about us not signing a player only to sign a different player and it working out better? Obv Mudryk to Trossard being the most high profile.
Hi charles, love your content and all the shoes you're on but PLEASE can someone actually do the work on our PSR position to see if we actually CAN purchase a player in Jan if needed or all the chat about getting this or that player is redundant
We scored 91 league goals last season, not sure why anyone thinks someone who wouldve just scored a higher percentage of those 91 would've made THE difference. We're built to spread goals around and one person scoring a higher percentage of those 91 wouldn't have won us the league. Points dropped that shouldnt have been dropped is what lost us the league.
Might be a crazy thought. Did we hold back in the transfer window as there might be an opportunity to get some players if the 115 charges come into fruition? I can't see the likes of Foden, Grealish, Harland staying?
Hi Charlie, great show as always. I know that all the furore over the Rice sending off has now died down. I’ve listen to most pundits those that have played football and those that have not. I agree that Rice should have probably gone, although the lack of consistency of referring decisions is obviously questionable. I know VAR cannot get involved as it was a second yellow, but why wasn’t it used to look at the actions of Veltman for violent conduct. We all saw Veltman through the ball at the back of Rices ankle before Rice flicked the ball away which was the exact time Veltman saw the opportunity to have a free hit at Rice. Anyone who played the game know that it is difficult to air shot the ball and would pull out of the kick before kicking Rice. Unless it was Veltman intent to kick Rice. Therefore VAR needs to get involved to view violent conduct. What do you think?
We tried to sign Cesko, met with Toney and enquired about Osimhen and Gyokeres but in the end decided to keep our power dry. We clearly wanted to sign a striker but the right deal didn't materialise for Arsenal (or our rivals). Trust the process. 😊
Charles, it's an 8/10 window for me. I can't believe people are so negative about this summer transfer window. 5/10 from some people?! Who was the 25-30 goal striker available for non-absurd money that Arsenal didn't go for? There wasn't a single striker signing any big team I can think of where I am jealous we didn't get him. Arsenal aren't magicians that can conger up a Haaland with potions. We were 2 points off last season and took 4 points from both Man City and Liverpool. Now we're even better. Objectely, we upgraded the quality of our defense w/ Calafiori and a healthy Timber. IMO Merino+Nwaneri is an upgrade on ESR+Veira in midfield. If necessary, Havertz and Zinchenko can also play as an 8. We started last season with Havertz as an 8, not a 9. Once he became our regular 9, then he essentially already replaced Nketiah as a 9 (an upgrade) because Nketiah got essentially no minutes after that. Sterling is an upgrade on Nelson, and is one extra added depth at 9 in an injury emergency. We didn't panic buy and used money wisely, so we left a squad place open and money in reserves to trigger Osimhen's new 75m euro release clause in January if he's doing well at Galastray (who btw play Tottenham so we'll see how he does against a Prem side).
Hej Charles, Any Arsenal pubs you would recommend to go to in order to see the match on tele if you havn't got a ticket for the emirates? Cheers, Daniel.
Hi Charles I see Kieran Tierney is back in training. Do you see him leaving on loan to Turkey as there window is still open. (I think) Also as a Rep of Ireland fan I really hope Dec brings he’s best shinguards for Saturdays match. I’d expect him to get kicked up and down the pitch 😂😂
Hi Charles, are you at all concerned with the form of Declan Rice. He looks a shadow of himself from last season where put in 7-8/10 performances every week. He had an average euros and has continued that form into the new season. I think his poor form may have contributed to him getting 2 yellows at the weekend. Id love to hear your thoughts. Garry
The way that statement from Sterling is structured and the words used honestly sounds like Arteta wrote it. Definitely one from the PR department I suspect. Regarding strikers, other teams manage to get high scoring strikers. Spurs have Son and had Kane, Liverpool have Salah and had Mane, as mentioned Newcastle have Isak, Villa have Watkins etc. We're competing for the EPL title with pockets full of money compared to most clubs in the world and yet we can't get a top striker ?
Is Martinelli's decline in form down to the fact we only seem to play down the right? He hardly ever gets a sniff of the ball and at times is completely open.
Hi Charles, I agree with your view that Havertz is most likely to start in midfield vs Spurs. Arteta really places a big emphasis on winning duals... and out of the existing options (Jorginho, Zinchenko & Havertz) he probably offers the most in this regard. That said, I think it borders negligence from Arteta to not have given Zinchenko any minutes at CM yet. All of his best attributes are when he is drifting into midfield and his worse attributes are defensively. Think the fact that we have more athletic and defensive minded options at LB (Timber/Calafiori/Tomiyasu) helps to mask both Zinchenko and Jorginho's lack of pace.
only the league winners (Chelsea) automatically qualify for the group stages. 3rd place play a mini tournament and then theres another round of qualification games in a few weeks where arsenal and Manchester City (who placed 2nd in the WSL) can get into the group stage
Arteta still hasn’t signed a contract extension, it’s worrying now. Think the delay is from Mikel, maybe he still isn’t decided yet. Don’t buy that the board is relaxed given how well he’s doing and managerial scarce across europe
Too many online fans are swayed by the opinions of some people on high profile RU-vid fan channels, if you listen to ex players and pundits in the normal media, their opinions are much more balanced and positive towards our club, our team........ that's why I don't go mental about things.
I think it's a 4/10, we need an extra man in midfield. Plus a striker. It was poor Charles, we took too long to sign two players. Fofana & Gyokores would've completed our team.
I think the window was a poor window not only due to missing the attacker we needed but also because of the mountain of work we have left ourselves to do next summer. Both of our senior 6’s will be leaving this summer in Partey and Jorginho and then we’ll have to get a back up goal keeper and at least two attackers if we have to replace sterling and get the one attacker we all think is short this season. That is a lot incoming work and expenditure!!!
You say we left ourselves with a mountain of work and then list four positions we need to sign, one of which is backup goalkeeper. That seems like a pretty easy window especially if there is no major international tournaments next year
@@jbb5544 it’s not just the number but the quality we have to replace. Jorgi, Partey all big players for us not going to be cheap to bring in that level of players in 3 positions. Along with 2 squad players. That kind of investment in one summer is not easy. And this transfer window we have a net spend of 22 million so that’s where I feel we could have made it easier for ourselves by spreading the summer over 2 summers rather than trying to do it all in one summer.
I wonder if back in the day, our Haaland, was Henry. Thus, have we had our time with the most prolific striker? Anyway, I know the likes of Isak is expensive. However, wouldn't the initial layout cost be paid back with winning the Premier League, or even the Champions League?
Hi Charles 👋, I hope all is good 👋 👦 ☺️ 👍 😊 🙏 Arsenal has got a a strong 💪 squad despite the departure of players and the arrival of new players. The Gunners needs to be mentally focused and win 🏆 matches 🏆. COYG to thrash Tottenham God willing 🙏. Have a good day Charles 😂. Arsenal rocks 🏆 🙏 🤲 🪨 🎸 😎.
Charles you said Arsenal went after Sesko, they looked around and was nothing suitable. They had no money. and be honest, if they had any money they could have bought a quality winger or c/f. They are just did not have money to spend !! The PR department at Arsenal was working overtime to get our hope's high. 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂
Why is Arsenal playing a champions league match on a Thursday? I hope Man City plays on a Thursday as well, else we may not get a good result at the Etihad.
At this point in my life, I can really make do with all the love from Arsenal fans. It's been a really really strange and difficult period for me, can't seem to find solutions within no matter how hard I have pushed and scratched the surface of the earth. I am a fighter, I don't want to quit, I don't want to lose this battle, I want to win this, I want to get this debt out of my system so I could live my life in simplicity and quietness. If you see this and you help with ideas, recommendations and prayers, pls let me know ❤❤
After hearing Sterling's words I'm thinking his in line to make his debut in the North London Derby & here's my team selection for that match Raya White Saliba Gabriel Timber Partey Odeagard Havertz Saka Sterling ( false 9 ) Martinili
Let’s be realistic yes Haland is another level but no one asked a 50 goal per season striker. We asked for a fit striker who can play 90/95 % of the matches. Jesus is out for the majority of the season.
He had clause of over 120mill but no one would pay dat. The player wanted to move so a deal was done. The issue is dat arsenal think kai can do it but he can't. The brighton game a proven finisher would score that chance.
What are the chances of players on loan play a role of espionage in general? Considering C paying more than 10m of his wages makes no sense (motives- his explusion was staged)for them not covering the scraps left for us.Hope he gets the Stockholm syndrome and signs for us permanent.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again try Martinelli down the middle with his pace to get behind. We wasted Walcott down the wing instead of through the middle don’t do the same with Martinelli
Sep 5 - Partey injured after, before, during or even on the flight while sleeping. So fed up of this. He gets injured every year in the first international trip.. and sidelines for the year.. Same thing every single year. Why is he still going?? 😐😐😐😐
Sterling must not vow anything he must just rediscover his form and love for playing and whatever happens along the way happens. If you just hell bent on proving something you will have a tough time in life
Charles, no one is suggesting Arsenal get a Haaland. The team clearly needs a striker. Additionally, Oshimen was available at a deep discount on deadline day. You never even mentioned this. For a big club like Arsenal, this window is a 6/10 at best. The game against Brighton would have been done and dusted in the first half with a potent striker.
A 7/10 for the window is just toxic positivity. We needed a striker and should have not let go of either Vierra or ESR as an Ode back-up. You are also being disingenuous as you were also adamant that we needed to prioritize a striker at the start of the window. We didn't get one. Not just Isak but even Gyokores was available. We left ourselves shot and will certainly pay for it.
