Back then Chaka Khan was young, shy and nervous during interviews. And yeah appears to be high, but how her demeanor changed completely when she sang " After A Love Affair" at the end of this interview. Thankful Chaka Khan has survived to date, November 22, 2018 ( Thanksgiving Day). She is talented, can sing like no other and has fans who truly love and adore her...The Legend has so much to be Thankful for.
I'm soo, soo, glad Chaka made it through this tough part of her life...we all make mistakes when we're young...but she's a true SURVIVOR...love, LOVE that lady right der!
I am so glad she is still with us and has fought through the turbulence of the drugs, heartache, etc... I have never stopped loving her voice, her person,, and from a distance have stayed in constant prayer for this lovely lady. I met her once or twice and she was always lovely, gracious, and as crazy fun as one would hope!! One of the Wonders of the Singing World!! CHAKA KHAN!! CHAKA KHAN!!
Thank you guys for praying for Chaka throughout the years. I don't think I could bare it if something happened to her. The best concert I have ever seen was her in 75 with Rufus. She was in excellent voice and very powerful.
She is a very beautiful Lady with a gift heaven!!! Her voice is timeless and there will never be another Singer like Ms.Chaka Kahn!! Her music gives me chills!!!!!!!
God I haven't seen this in years! This was a really tuff time for Chaka, She was losing her voice, her relationship with her label Warner Bros. had started to turn sour, and she was trying to get clean. So happy you made it through the fire Chaka, She is truly the best.
I never ever liked jazzy songs until I heard Chaka sing them. I grew up listening to her when I was in Jr. High. I went to a couple of concerts when she was with Rufus and I was blown away by her vocal prowess. It was like a perfect union her and Rufus. I've also seen her a few times when she went solo as well and they were great shows as well. I said all this to say no matter what she did in the past this woman is a great talent and a living legend. She has survived the harsh and cruel music industry that a lot of others has succumbed to. Keep on going Chaka for you are every woman indeed. ❤️
I love Chaka .. this is GOLD! Must be so difficult living your struggles publicly! She’s literally been Through The Fire 🔥 They don’t come like this anymore everyone is living by a script now SMH!
How beautiful is Chaka Khan? I love her!!! I honestly and truly love her. I read somewhere that she feels her voice is an instrument, she wanted to sound like a trumpet or sax. And us fans have seen enough performances to know that those pipes are indeed an INSTRUMENT!!!
I wish people STOP wanting her to be "classy/conservative", she's queen of funk, not your average black singer, i love all that she brings, high or not, the woman is the baddest in the business, her dress, hair, overall persona is intriguing, can't keep my eyes off her, she's definitely an original!!!, Then, there's that voice, even the best singers sing her praises!!!!
...Here he even turned around the fact that she's known for being so intoxicated at her performances that she could barely stand up (sing), I've witnessed a few live concerts of that. Arsenio was very clever with that>>>>you just lay down and SANG that note up out the floor, bringing a new lyric to the song, etc...to paraphrase. He was always in her corner and had her back.
Chaka so fucking gorgeous my god,I've always love love loved her looks and voice she so unique, creative and different and a rare breed in obsessed with her big huge ass hairstyles.
this was an awkward interview for obvious reasons. but its amazing to think of all of the singers who came AFTER Chaka, struggled with their careers and were not able to beat their drug demons and many are no longer with us. she and whitney were alike in so many ways. both battled drug addiction, vocal problems and decline in popular music. but, its 2016 and Chaka is still going strong.
But she's got a story to tell. I honestly think the fact that the singers that were younger than her didn't make it and she did, and the fact that for such a hard life she seems to have found the fountain of youth and stopped aging in the 80s. God seemingly has a plan for her.
Thank You Zandi5 for this upload. I remember this airing and my VCR was on the rags. overtime Chaka graced arsenios show, she sang her ass off! And this was a first for me hearing her in End Of A Love Affair live, and it the best for me. Yes, her interview was rocky, she was mosdef wired off of something unfortunately. The hyperness, what drug causes that??? Arsenio made her very comfortable during his interview, why I like him. He never out right humiliated a guest......
love arsenio miss his show. he brought our black stars to the forefront. people who probably wouldn't have had exposure at all. he tried. ...love him and Chaka.
Interviews never were her thing, she's one of the most awkward artists to see being interviewed. Although she has no reason to be nervous or worried imo. Hope she got over those insecurities.
I love Chaka as much any fan could....but Chaka was as high as a kite. Maybe it takes a recovering addict like myself to recognize the behavior. I'm so happy that she came out on the other side. God bless her
As beautiful and talented as Chaka is you can tell she is under the influence. She has said she was so high she doesn't remember the 80's. This is a kind of low point in her career and she has put in the work to still be around and thank God for that. It's not about how you fall down it's how you get up, Chaka is still with us looking as beautiful as ever! Watching that interview Arsenio really helped her along to get through it,, She has such a beautiful laugh- Love you Chaka!
I remember this episode/segment, dang my vcr was down too. Thanx for posting. Chaka has gotten better over the years with interviews. Nervous, but Arsenio always made her feel comfortable, even with mocking jokes ie; on the floor at the Amp pulling the note up, etc...well we know that story.
This was painful to watch because she was ‘on’. This interview and when she was on the show ‘BB & Friends’. I’m so happy that she was able to conquer those demons. Talent like hers should not be wasted. She’s still gorgeous and that voice whew!!
DetroitLives313 Well these was the days she was on that stuff. But hey least she made it through that interview. But she could've been very nervous. LOL!
Zevil Gehannivani I appreciate that Chaka is clean and somber now, but I sat and watched this back in the early 90's when it was on television and she was high.....
DetroitLives313 Everyone has their moment. Elizabeth Taylor was drunk in the Oscars, Mariah was drunk getting her awards. Many people have their on and off days. LOL! I was more glad Chaka didn't embarrass herself.
This was in 1988! Chaka was not in good voice during this period as this was the when she developed voice polyps on her vocal cords which severely affected her voice as is most apparent when she unsuccessfully tries to hit the high note during the climax of the song. She went for surgery shortly thereafter.
I love my Chaka...girl is most definately wacked out here. I had ticket ONCE to see her live in San Francisco, and unfortunately, she checked into rehab for heroine, and I never got the chance to ever see her. My loss.
+Fire Marshall Bill A serious heroin and cocaine addiction. She was nearly blackballed by the industry because of her theatrics such as showing up concerts late and so high and drunk she fell onstage dress flew up you saw everything. She cleaned up in the late 80s to keep her career. She has been clean from drugs almost 10 years.
Blindianswirl Two Wow I'm sorry to hear that. I knew something was wrong with her when I saw this interview. You said she's been clean for almost 10 years..It's 2016 now,so that means she been doing drugs again recently?
+Fire Marshall Bill She was a junkie throughout the 70s and 80s. Her behavior was the stuff of legends showing up to concerts hours late and too intoxicated to perform, she could barely talk. She was a drug buddy of Natalie Cole and later on Whitney Houston. Sadly Chaka's son copied her with drug addiction and has been arrested a few times one time for murder.
Yeah, my girl Chaka has been through the fire and now sees......and has tried to help others, gave public (and I'm sure private personal) advise to Miki Howard, Whitney Houston, and currently the late Amy Winehouse (it's up to them if they gonna listen and heed the warning-no puns of a Chaka song). Mama, is a teacher, a preacher, a counselor!
high as a skunk lol...damn i never kne she done drugs until prolly couple yrs ago...sis told me but damn watching these is like whoa!! coka aint gud sweet thang lol
This is why we need to stop glorifying gansta rappers and hip/hop who brag about how much the proceeds of drugs have "enriched" our community as we allow these renegades in various forms to take over our arts, families, and communities...This interview and performance is so tragic...
