It’s interesting that you turned to this, rather than the escapist literature that many of us chose.

Thank you Claudia, Merry Christmas! Here in the US it seems that de-funding the arts is a challenge, even before the pandemic.

I think one reason many people didn’t take COVID seriously is that films set in a pandemic (often based on books) show a world utterly changed, and not the pandemic scenario we experienced, which was some fundamental changes but not a total breakdown of society . Also, at least in the US, the horrific behavior of our un-elected government leader who lacked empathy and rather, I observe, seems to enjoy the suffering he causes, as long as he is the center of the attention that ensues.

"Quiet Survivalism" I like that. Some suggestions for inclusion: Island of the Blue Dolphins and Into the Forest. I'm sure to think of others...Interesting that Station Eleven and the two I mentioned feature female protagonists, but the survivalist stories I can think of (thus far, anyway) featuring male protagonists I couldn't qualify as 'quiet'....

That's an interesting correlation, and one I hadn't thought about before

Station Eleven in my favourite book. I've read it 4 times, and the last time was in 2020 as well. To me, it was so comforting, partly because it's just a familiar story to me at this point. The other part that made it comforting was the future that is presented to the reader, post-pandemic. The pace of life is one that really appeals to me, and I enjoy "living" that quiet life with the characters.

I followed the same strategy, finally reading Camus's novel The Plague just as Covid deaths were peaking in my area that Spring. It definitely gave the book a gripping immediacy to say the least.

I read it in 2020, too, and enjoyed it as a buddyread. Like that idea of "quiet survivalism". Since it referenced King Lear I read the play for the first time, too. I remember liking that I read them together but 3 years on and I can't recall why 😅

Merry Christmas Claudia 🎄 I read Station Eleven during the Pandemic, too and have recently read Sea of Tranquility, which also has pandemics in it. I live in Georgia and wonder why Emily StJohn Mandel chose to have her pandemic the Georgia Flu as having originated here.

I really do like post apocalyptic dystopian fiction. I first discovered the genre as a child when i read Z for Zachariah by Robert C O'Brien. It's still one of my favourite books of all time. Have you read it Claudia?🤓 If not, please do, and then do a video about what you think. It also has a female protagonist which is why i think it resonated with me so much 👍🏼
