A look at the vandalism of world-famous works of art, including Michelangelo's David, the Mona Lisa, and more recently, the work of Banksy. Andrew MadeAFilm: / @andrewmadeafilm Instagram: @halfasleepchris
A lot of people seem to be hearing "I don't really encourage" when I said "I thoroughly encourage". And I do thoroughly encourage! - here's Andrew's channel: ru-vid.com/show-UC7iYFAjO74XmecXzSmT07tQ
'Why does he have such a extraordinary small crack on his foot' He had us in the first half Edit: I never had this many likes you people lifted my fragile ego
"Back in the day when we were allowedto travel" Ah yes, decades ago when people used to go outside. Wait a minute let me just google what's outside like.
@@morganbisdorf9638 In the story of David and Goliath, David kills Goliath with a sling, which is just a bit of fabric and string you can use to hurl a rock at something really hard. So the joke is that he basically threw a rock at him.
"Back in the days you were allowed to travel" lol very true. Also, I have to say that these videos are so well done and are good things to watch during these times.
I don’t know why people genuinely see masterpieces that people have spent countless hours on and think “Yeah, imma go destroy it.” Being somewhat of an Artist myself, it really annoys me when I draw something and someone senselessly draws on it by the time I return.
@@yayaskyrim493 Let me rephrase that then, I don’t think people should be allowed to create art over other people’s art without their permission. In other words, vandalism is wrong.
Hey Chris, I know you will probably never see this but I want you to know who much I love your RU-vid channel It has made me so happy watching you videos, and when a new one comes out I am filled with joy. Keep making Videos because you are making me and many others, very very happy 😃
Great video! Reminds me of the time when someone attacked Who's Afraid of Red , Yellow and Blue III by Barnett Newman. It's considered one of the biggest murders in art history. When the painting was acquired by the Stedelijk in Amsterdam, it genuinely made people angry. That was the effect the huge, almost entirely red canvas had on people. In 1986, the painting was attacked with a Stanley knive by a mentally ill person. He made four long, horizontal cuts and four shorter vertical cuts in the canvas. After it was attacked, naturally the painting had to be restored. After long consideration, it was send to Daniel Goldreyer in the US. He knew Barnett Newman and apparently was the only one who knew how to restore the work. Four years and a million guilders later, the painting returned to Amsterdam. But people saw right away that something was wrong. The beautiful suptle nuances in the colours that made the work stand out, were gone. Apparently, Goldreyer used house paint and a roller to paint over the work! Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue III was murdered again. This time, for forever. At the moment, we don't have the techniques to undo the damage done to the painting. Hopefully, the work can be restored to it's former glory in the future.
Amazing video! Never noticed those rather subtle damages! I love how you put so much work into such a short video! Chris you have such a unique approach to RU-vid, I never thought I would find a channel as good at yours! Very Original! Well done!
My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.
Also the night watch in the Dutch museum Het Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, the painting got stabbed with an knife and damaging acid was grown on i also two pieces of the left side and right side were cut of so that it could fit in between a doorway (this one was done by the people who the painting was made for). Recently they’ve put the painting in a glass box to protect it and restoratie it. It’s sad that people need to destroy something beautiful.
For those who *do* wonder why David's... Uhm, appendage is so small (and why those of men portrayed in other works of art are, too): in antiquity, it was believed that men who were 'well-endowed' were stupid and influenced in a greater way by their base urges and instincts, making them almost animalistic. This is why satyrs are often (if not always!) depicted with a much larger... Thing. A small one was seen as a sign of wisdom, intelligence, and self-control! Michelangelo and other artists during the Renaissance were obviously influenced by Classical Greek and Roman art, and so they adopted and continued this tradition.
Can I just say how funny & enjoyable Chris’s videos are? :D I always learn something interesting & sometimes share them with my [Online learning] class when the topics come up.
This sort of thing has always been happening. In ancient Greece, a guy named Herostratus burned down a temple of Artemis just because he wanted to be remembered for something after he died, even if that thing happened to be a pointless act of vandalism. Unfortunately, it worked. Maybe I shouldn't be sharing this fact around.
I actually had a Banksy 10 mins from my home. It was the child labour Banksy on the side of poundland in Wood Green. It was scolped off in 2012 and sold illigaly in Miami for $1000000. After sparking public refuge, it was returned to the UK and sold in Wales. Sombody (believed to be Banksy himself) added a rat with a sign reading "why?" On the place where the painting originally was and it Is still up there today.
I Just Realized that Almost Every word at 4:06 started with a V! The amount of detail is insane, and my respect for Chris just went impossibly higher! I also cannot wait to see the new Kitten!
One time I was in a Terraria building server, i had some friends in a faction, and we built an amazing spawn island. It was massive and detailed, we spent hours on it. Only a short while later, we found someone with only bare Solar armor (you could get items using a /i command, and he didn't care about looking nice) mashing away the build we spent such a long time working on. We were furious. Once other people on the server noticed what he was doing though, they joined in on the verbal attack in chat, (he had PvP off) and talking about how nice the island was. It even got to the point where everyone on the server was attacking him, and eventually, he left the server. Sadly though, he had destroyed the spawn island in it's entirety at that point, so we had to rebuild it. I've never understood why some people just destroy the hard work of others, imagine such a sad, pitiful existence where the only way you can find joy is taking the joy from other people.
If you ever do a sequel, please look at more grey vandalisms. Like when banksy destroyed his own artwork, or the painting ‘insult to injurry’ I think they’ve got incredible stories and would be really interesting to see on this channel I know you probably won’t see this but if you do, please consider it, we all love your videos and appreciate the effort that goes into them
Idk about any of these from history because im not a history fan but 2 of my family is And thank you for letting me know about this and i love your channel
if banksy had artistic integrity, he’d recognise “vandalism” as an inherent part of his medium of choice and embrace it as the next natural stage in the work’s life cycle.
He does, he has commented on how he likes vandalism and has vandalised his own work on multiple occasions. He mocks those who preciously protect his art works for monetary selfishness
He himself isn't the one installing those ridiculous protection measures, it's the state and officials who completely miss the point of his work and couldn't wrap their heads around art being openly available for everyone
0:26 Anyone with a dirty mind like mine would be able to fill in the blanks here, “Why does he have such an extraordinary small _____” Is it just me? 😳
