Here is another treasure from the CRATES, i.e., dusty boxes of Betamax videotapes (some unlabeled) that were recorded from television broadcasts when Beta was the video standard and VHS had not yet emerged as a competitor.
This is the classic edition of the Jazz Messengers when Art Blakey was introducing the Marsalis brothers on the international jazz scene. Wynton was also the band's musical director at that time. The tune being performed is "Little Man", a Charles Fambrough composition written for his son.

Check out The Jazz Icon DVD series Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers 1958 - The Moanin' Band. The Hip Philly sound all day. The corny Marsalis Brothers do not belong on RU-vid. The music represented by the Marsalis era was neither good music for jam sessions, back yard B.B.Ques, or baby making.Salute to the composers of songs like Ceora, Bronze Dance, Minor's Holiday, Paul's Pal, Airegin, Dat Dere,This I Dig Of You and and other great songs from the 20's,30's,40's,50's and 60's.

I love Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and have lots of the albums going back to the Clifford Brown days. This was the best band though, with Wynton and co taking it up even a notch further with some wonderful compositions like this one. Album Of The Year is a fantastic record of this band at their peak. RIP to Charles Fambrough, an essential element of that sound, and of course the master himself Art Blakey.

Thanks for adding this. This was one great band. They don't come like this anymore. I always loved this tune of Fambrough's (Little Man). He was not only a great bassist but a great composer. RIP Charles Fambrough.

This, of course, is "Little Man." Charles wrote this as tribute to his son Mark, who was just 5 or 6 when this was written. I was hanging with Charles at his crib very early one morning when he brought out a piece of music that he had been up all night working on. He said he wanted to hear it on the horn. So we played it, just bass and alto. It was this tune, Little Man. Fambrough shared everything he did with his friends. It's still a little tough for me to watch this.

1. Is he tounging all of those?! 2. How have I never heard of Pierce before. He's so great 3. I like this. Is it in the real book? (I would like changes for my combo, but am also in the dreaded IB, so I don't have time to figure out the chords myself)
