Omgoodness! Thank you! I have been wanting to work with metal clays foe a long while now and my husband kept saying ... I think you need to wait ,it cost to much and you need to do your jewelry making in small steps and you'll need more expensive tools to do this. And you've just shown me that I have everything for the most part already here ,besides the metal clay of course. I cant wait to get some ordered and get started!! I'm so excited!!BTW , I love you all at FMG!

So glad to help! We suggest that, for your first few pieces, you choose a "slow dry" formula. Slow dry silver clay gives you a longer working time, so you can experiment with it longer. www.firemountaingems.com/search/?keywords=slow+dry

Badger balm is what I use plus small amounts of clay not as much as you used.

Great tutorial! What do you mean by fire up any stone under 5mm? Most stones crack under heat?
@monsieurlemarquis

great video! you make it look sooo easy!! i wanted to buy a pack of artclay but i noticed one should not torch fire pieces bigger than a silver dollar nor weighing more that 25gr...they dont explain why. do you know by any chance why? thanks
@FireMountainGems
@FireMountainGems 7 лет назад
It has to do with how even the heat can be throughout the piece all at the same time. If the heat doesn't stay within a certain zone through the whole piece at the same time, it can split and crack as the water and organic materials burn off/out at different rates.

Don't you need to neutralize the patina? Also what is your paste?

Sorry to the comment again. But I was reading some of the other comments and noticed that someone had mentioned you could not use anything larger than a silver dollar I think or over 25 grams when firing with a torch. So does that mean that I would have to purchase a kiln?
@FireMountainGems
@FireMountainGems 6 лет назад
Larger pieces need a kiln. Some folks make multiple smaller pieces and solder them together, so that is also an option.

They have microwave kilns now that are about 100$ those might be a useful tool if you don't want to invest in a traditional kiln

I am trying silver clay myself, and its not turning orange in the firing process. I am using a firing torch. Does this mean the torch is not strong enough? Pls help me :(
@FireMountainGems
@FireMountainGems 2 года назад
It sounds like your torch isn't getting the metal clay hot enough. Here's a video that might be helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LVXuuC5akQA.html

I have a question watching Your great video: is this torch burning technique also possible for a ring? Or does this only work for (very) flat pieces of jewelry? Kind regards, Hilde (from Belgium)
@FireMountainGems
@FireMountainGems 6 лет назад
Yes it is! The mass must be small enough, for even firing. www.firemountaingems.com/resources/videos/fb06

This is really good news for me. My son bought me a beautiful sterling silver ring in 2004 when I was on chemo. I wore it on my left thumb and 9 years later I was visiting someone who had a just weaned parrot for sale. I was head over heels for her Hyacinth Macaw Mabel, probably the most beautiful bird I've ever had the honor of holding. She was gently feeling at my hand with her beak and little dry tongue, until she came up to my beloved ring. And I think she may have thought I needed her to remove it. It turned out with the ring smashed as flat as possible around the bone in my thumb. I stayed calm enough to gently get Mabel back up on her perch. And then 4 fully grown adults went about trying to save my purple thumb and flattened ring with the creases at each end. And now another 9 years later and another chemo under my belt, I think it's time I try to recreate my beloved ring. I just started looking into this as a way to make a ring and you've just answered the pressing question!
