One of the great synthesizers in modern jazz, Teddy Charles was a talented vibraharpist who made important contributions as a composer and an organizer of musical ideas. His trio and quartet recordings for Prestige in the early 1950s pointed the way toward experimental approaches that many other musicians later adopted. Although they deal with standard songs,
Mary Osborne (July 17, 1921 March 4, 1992) was an American jazz electric guitarist.
Osborne was born in Minot, North Dakota. She learned violin as a child and could also play guitar and bass by age 15. She heard Charlie Christian play in Al Trent's band at a stop in Bismarck, North Dakota; Christian became one of her most prominent influences. She went on to tour with Buddy Rogers, Dick Stabile, Terry Shand, Joe Venuti, and Russ Morgan, and recorded with Mary Lou Williams, Beryl Booker, Coleman Hawkins, Mercer Ellington, Ethel Waters, and Wynonie Harris. From 1952 to 1960, she was featured on Jack Sterling's CBS radio show. Later in life she settled in Bakersfield, California, where she died, and only performed occasionally, though she would play jazz festivals into the 1990s.
Morey Feld (15 August 191528 March 1971) was an American jazz drummer born in Cleveland, Ohio, perhaps best-known for his work with the bands of Ben Pollack (1936), Benny Goodman (1943-1945), Eddie Condon (1946), Bobby Hackett and Billy Butterfield. In 1960 Feld moved to Denver, Colorado and worked with Peanuts Hucko's quintet.

Mary Osborne was, without a doubt, one of the FINEST jazz guitarists of her era. Notice I didn’t say “female” guitarists? Mary was SO good, such an INCREDIBLY PROFESSIONAL jazz stylist, she could light up any all-male jam session. No doubt about it, Mary had the RESPECT of her fellow musicians...that’s obvious in these videos.

This is so cool! Mary is the only female instrumentalist I have seen in footage from this era. Female singers, yes, but not players. All these 50's jazz cats and Mary just comping away there in her white dress, then she jumps in with a solo that swings as cool as any I've ever heard. Wow! She's fantastic! Thanks for posting.

Interesting. In the years since, I hope you've had the chance to check out footage of Mary Lou Williams, Dottie Dodgion, JoAnn Castle, Vi Redd, or Marian McPartland.

I wish we could force Rock players to watch this stuff and see how you can be rhythmic without beating a song to death. Everyone doesn't have to play ALL the time!

Mary takes a great solo. I also just finished the VIntage guitar feb 2011 issue..and the best thing in it was the article on Mary Osborne. made me find an LP with her and Mary McParland, and also a japanese record with her starring on it that cost me a small fortune. First time seeing her. What a kick!

There's a well-done and substantial bio about Mary in this month's issue of Vintage Guitar magazine, if anyone's interested. She was acquainted with and influenced by Charlie Christian, but had her own thing going on. Mary had to be able hang, just to hang around the jazz boys' club in those days, and she definitely could hang.

What a super band! Coleman Hawkins on the tenor saxophone, Mary Osborne on the electric guitar, Morey Feld on drum. Do you know the names of the other musicians?

I can see a lot of Hawk standing on the stage during these vids from the party, but not a lot of him playing... in other words - could you tell me in which parts he plays?
@funkality
@funkality 14 лет назад
haha right? The diff between a good player n a great player> Great players play on the back of the beat to give the music more swing..good players play on top of the beat aka play slightly ahead of the beat.
