I use Turner watercolors in my watercolor gallery classes, and have always found them great to work with. I think they paint out beautifully. I think you might have had the problem with what you call 'goopiness' because you did not wet them down a few minutes before you started using them. I have my students spray their palettes when they first arrive and by the time they greet each other and get out their materials the paints are ready to go.

Kimberly Crick doesn't seem too crazy about Turner. But I still wouldn't mind giving them a try sometime. Right now, Jerry's has a 4 color "Spring" set of 4 pastel colors in 15ml tubes that look really pretty and go for only $23.71 plus $7.95 shp. Not bad. I have a 5ml set of 12 Holbein pastels, so this set would be a good addition to those. 😊

I have been using Turner watercolors for years and here is a little hit on using them. If you go to Jerry's Artarama and read the full description you will see the word "concentrated" so they have a strong color and thick consistency especially when dried down. With some colors like the sap green you need to add a drop or two of water to get a better flow. I am a botanical painter and have created some lovely paintings with Turner watercolors. I would recommend them to anyone with the understanding the they a concentrated paint and need to be watered down.

Lovely tip, thank you! I had so much fun painting with these. I wouldn't hesitate to pull this palette out again and paint with it.

Hullo Miranda, I have used Turners watercolors years ago, I had a few problems, yet if I remember correctly, I added some OxGall and mixed it all together with a needle. I have used a needle to get a flat surface in my pans. I find the paint "wets" more evenly if it does not need to work around lumps of paint. I have used lumpy paints from other brands and the needle works even if you do not add OxGall. If the paint is severely lumpy adding a drop of water with a dropper or pipette.

I bought a large set of Turner, plus additional tubes, four years ago and I LOVE THEM. I haven't had any of the problems you, and the people commenting, describe. I wonder if they have changed their formulas, or if some other factory is producing them. I have Daniel Smith, Da Vinci, Schminke, etc, and Turner has been my favorite, overall. Daniel Smith wins for their spectacular range of colors, though. They have my favorite Indanthrine Blue. Maybe I should order a tube or two, and hope I get a decent formula. I love that color.

I ordered mine earlier this year and haven't had the problems others mention. My only issue is that ivory black dried hard and requires a little extra time to pre-wet, but otherwise, they work great for me.

good review. I've also tried some of the Turner watercolor paints and it bothers me that most of the tubes are not completely full and there are air bubbles in them. Some had about a small pan's worth of air in them. Indanthrene blue was poorly pigmented, I wanted to mix a few pastel tones with Van Gogh's titanium white and I always started with half half and then added a little more white until I got a good pastel tone. I thought that I would have to add a lot more white for indanthrene blue but the opposite was the case and with the starting ratio, it became a very light sky blue and I had to add about 3 times as much indanthrene blue until it was intense enough. I now prefer to buy shin han rather than Turner, they fill the tubes completely and cost a similar amount at Jackson's art and peters art in berlin have shin han relatively cheap.

Love this picture. Amazing how you made the "gloopiness" actually work for you. Going to have to nickname you Marvelous Miranda. Going to check to see if you can get the Maya colors in individual tubes.

I've had them many years. Bought them because of Lindsay the Frugal Crafter. She used them for over a year and even had her own set for sale with Jerry's Artarama. I like them a lot. I'm not an expert but I ha've Sennelier and Mission Gold and I keep returning to the The Turners. I've not run. Into the problems you did so I'm wondering if they changed their formula? Just FYI. IMHO.
@MirandaWatsonArt
@MirandaWatsonArt Месяц назад
I didn't know that about Lindsay! I would be curious what Lindsay would think of these paints these days if the formula has changed. Interesting

they’re not bad but I’d select only a few. Their PBk11 is nice, from a set that’s at least 10 years ago. And I love the delicacy of maya yellow. Thanks for video.

Turner is great, i did skip out on adding some of the gloopier colors to my everyday palette though, just for ease of use. But that diox violet and phthalo blue are a staple of any palette i make.

I wanted to love Turner because of their affordability. And though some colors are great there a lot that make painting not enjoyable. I would say quality is 50/50. Great video 😊

I love their paint but yes they are a bit goopy-I really hate the ivory black 😅. I have the 18 set and I really appreciate the unique colors they include in their sets, especially mayan blue and turquoise blue 🥰 Also their rose red is the most beautiful pinkiest pv19 and I'm definitely stocking up on it 🥰

I recently bought these too. Yesterday in fact. I’ve already painted several small pieces and I love the results but the paint is difficult when used in an open palette. I found that the binder slides away from the pigment in some colors. I was using a plate because I’m out of town. I’m eager to get them into some large pans and dried out. I don’t anticipate this being a problem once I get them in the pans. I chose individual tubes instead of a set so I missed out on the maya yellow which I now regret. Thanks for sharing!
@MirandaWatsonArt
@MirandaWatsonArt Месяц назад
Oh, interesting. I was going to try a few colors straight out of the tube and see if they still were gloopy. Sounds like it could be a worse problem!
@jlhyndman
@jlhyndman Месяц назад
Hi again, to follow up… I decanted mine into large pans and used a toothpick to thoroughly mix them before leaving to dry. (Based upon what I saw from your experience) They dried very smoothly and quite nice. I highly suggest this “toothpick stir” step for everyone using this brand! Re-wetting them was fine for me. I think these are very concentrated and best used from a wash as opposed to straight pigment from the pan - in my experience. Thank you for your awesome content!

What a beautiful painting Miranda! I would be interested in swatches of the ivory black and the sap green directly out of the tube.. if there is any difference.. The Mayan blue looks so beautiful! 😍

I have a sizeable Turner collection. I hate them. The more you use them, the more you realize how bad they are. They have a very low pigment load which they try to stretch by grinding it very finely, they use excessive medium and far too much water, so much so that certain colors practically disappear in the pan when you try to dry them. They have a terrible texture as you had noted due to these reasons, and only very strong, transparent, and economical pigments behave regularly because of it. The "Mayan" pigments (and "Ivory Black" for some strange reason) are the worst in this regard. The more you use them, the more you realize that terrible texture is pervasive in most of the colors, they just aren't as immediately apparent in some as they are in others. Jerry's Artarama talks them up like they are these fantastic paints only because they have exclusive distribution for Turner in the US, they do the same with every other low-quality discount brand that they have similar arrangements with.
