The lucky winners have now been announced: Saintmoz (midiGates) Teo Bonvini (mididreams) NK turley (midiSTEPs) Gokhan Canbulat (mididreams) Nobatt Tröll (midi lfos) BIG CONGRATS! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Please remember, folks, that although we live in an age of an abundance of free online content, this content is produced by flesh and blood people - people like me, and like you. So you can make the choice to help out the channel by not watching these behind an ad blocker, as I am sure you do not want to exploit your dear old Gavinski any more than RU-vid is already exploiting him 😉. A lot of viewers ask how RU-vid ad revenue works - basically, if you skip ads before 30 seconds is up, or without clicking on a link, the creator is unlikely to get any remuneration from RU-vid. So when you view vids by RU-vidrs you like, watching at least one or two ads is a good way to support us. Thank you! You can follow me on Twitter at @gavinski_s. I mostly only post music-related stuff. Also, if you enjoy the channel and would like to show your appreciation, my PalPal is paypal.me/GavinskisTutorials I am very happy when people support me in this way, and will certainly take the time to email you to thank you personally if you do 🙏.
Just a note the developer is listed as “Arthur”, so when I searched for Art Kerns it did not show. Maybe let him know to tag Art in his search as well. Thanks!
I have RU-vid premium at the moment, how does that affect the situation. Also thanks for the heads up about watching the whole 30 seconds I didn’t know that. I’ll definitely keep that in mind, when premium expires.
Cheers. Yeah, I wonder how different my iOS experience would have been if I had not discovered aum and had instead stuck with a more traditional daw. Pros and cons to both I guess!
Love the UI clean feel, and a lot of great features like the gate. midiDREAMs is a winner and the right choice for the winner. and again...another great tutorial by Gavinski
Thanks for the deep review. Your channel has become a point of reference for all new apps! I know that sooner or later you're gonna dig deep! Bravo! Should I win, I'd like to get a copy of MidiDREAMs.
Wow! This is a really well-done review; very thorough, and not rushed, and not slow either. It’s great that you’re willing to put together an hour-long video on one plugin. This looks to be a really powerful plugin. I can see the gate step mode offering some very cool “accompaniment” possibilities: trigger a slow enveloped pad, and you’d only hear the swell when you paused playing new notes! Yes, I’d love to win a copy of MIDIDreams/Drums! Cheers Gavinski!!
Nice comment, thnx! Check out my archives if u haven't, there are a fair few deep and long vids. Aparillo, Polyphase, Stria, are just a few that spring to mind 😉
Cheers Paul! When I was half way through doing this, it dawned on me why no one had done a vid despite it having been out for a week. Thorough tutorials on complex midi sequencers are by far the hardest to do. A lot of things to think about, a lot of hard to predict interactions between mutating elements, a lot that can go wrong. 😁
The demo of all the instruments playing together worked really well. I've not come across this developer before so it was good to watch this and have a bit more knowledge on his apps. If I win would be happy to give midiDreams a go
Thanks for the ride Gav, beautiful examples here as always. It makes those deep dives not only helpful but also very enjoyable to follow ! I hope MidiDREAMs will become an Universal app in the future, the interface is perfect and it would really fit on the iPhone too.
Very detailed overview Gav. Thanks for putting in the effort. Mididreams is the midi control app everyone should play with. This is a great way to design or tweak custom melodies or rhythms.
Yeah, a few ppl are very excited about this. Aleyas from the AB Forum pointed out to me why it is so cool. He is using finger snaps in drambo to move sequences forward in this, very cool. Is there no other iOS sequencer that can do that?
@@GavinskisTutorials I don't think I've ever seen a midi gate step based sequencer on iOS... I do feel like I've used something similar... Maybe Rozeta cells? I think it has a similar midi gate function, but naturally it is a completely different beast and you'd probably end up using it in a way it wasn't intended to be used (mostly). Otherwise I might have just used Drambo to do this at a certain point; in an albeit, very much simplified way in comparison to what this app does. But... no surprise there, Drambo + Hours of programming = any app available lol. Regardless, sometimes it is far more convenient to just get an app to do the same thing in a more simplified / streamlined way and save yourself the hours of work it can take to build things from scratch.
@@GavinskisTutorials I’m not even sure but I do believe a good 10 months ago when I was playing with the Rozeta suite I did do something similar to a midi gate step sequence with Cells, however it’s been too long to be accurate tbh. I’ll have to double check and let u guys know!
Possibly the funkiest gavinski's jam thus far! Don't think I've ever heard a four on the floor beat in one of your vids before ;) If I get lucky, I'm definitely keen on MidiSTEPS.
thanks for this vid and the time/energy you have put into other vids. mididreams is a must for me! stay safe n sane and don't forget to 'Play' music ; )
Great to see a new analog style sequencer. Others I’ve used in the past has gone out of the apple store. Would love to win this and will be checking out their other apps. Cheers!
It’s cool that Mr.Kerns bundled these 2 apps together.. 👍 a sweet little bonus.. Thanks for that deep dive.. details are always appreciated.. obviously I still don’t have it yet.. far too many apps to catch up with, never mind continuing to use them to write some music.. 🤪 thanks a bunch.. would still love to win a copy of midiDREAMS/DRUMS..
Thorough as ever. I share your enthusiasm for Art’s interface design . His Midi LFOs and Probability Gates are on pretty much everything I do. Oh, and if I should get lucky, this is the app I’d like to win (it’s the only one of his I haven’t already got!) Midi Dreams / Drums for the win! :)
I'm a big MidiSequencer and Quantum fanboy... But MidiDreams seems like an awesome reinterpretation of analogue-style midi sequencer. And Kerns really did an awesome job on this as we can see with your amazing demo+review. 😍 Gonna drop my name for a chance for MidiDREAMS
@@GavinskisTutorials Actually no. Quantum is the more advanced one. Like multiple midisequencers in one... Wow... after you mentioned art's manuals, I went to check his site and then I realized he's the one behind Little Midi Sequencer and Funkbox ❤
Hey Gavin, I think this is going to be a very good tutorial on using sequencers in general, not just this app. I'm starting to realize that the basics are pretty... basic, but there are finer points I'm looking forward to learning with this tutorial. Kern's other apps seem to be focused on the Volca, which I don't have, so I'd like to add this app, MidiDreams, to my arsenal. Thanks for another very pedagogically sound (sorry, I'm a teacher) tutorial! And, good luck everybody! May the odds be ever in your favor!
As always, full of useful information. Out of interest Gavin, what’s the spec on the iPad you use for your videos? It seems highly capable. Oh, and yes a copy of MIDIdreams would be really appreciated please. It the closest digital version of an analogue sequencer yet, very SQ10 like?
I dreamed of midi way back when I roiled in a foxhole den No clothing, food, or powerlines But music lived inside my mind With brain imagined melodies Performed on blinking light machines Connected to a clacking board That once ignited, simply roared While scrolling through each bank of sound The luscious vibes buzzed all around I heard the future in the past And now the day is here at last Gavinski posted Art Kerns vid It only costs a couple quid But once connected to your apps A hundred thousand days will lapse Before u come out of the haze Creating sounds for days and days It’s crazy flowing magic fun It’s deeper than the bloody Sun It’s satisfaction guaranteed So pick it up with hastened speed We thank u Gav for diving deep With tips and tricks we all can keep Until we meet again my friend Subscribe and like right to the end And now i’ll go back to my dream And lurk until your next big scheme... Mididream maerdidiM
This is a great review and also 🙏 a tutorial introducing a measure of music/midi event control theory, through the canvas of a grade A++ 16 step sequencer. IMHO this sequencer is a very nuanced and expressive environment for creating some amazing music..... as you can hear in this tutorial. 16 step sequencing can sound monotonous but that’s history with the degree of variation and control available in this app .... the possibilities are enormous. Yours Limbic née Baba O’Reilly 👏👏👏🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶🎩👍🦄🥁🥁🙏
Baba o'reilly, 😂. Yes, I think this will appeal to a lot of ppl. Not everyone sees the power, but it has some great features. Definitely want the ability to set up multiple types of probability simultaneously, this is the biggest weakness and bother me quite a lot
ta+ Gavinski. MidiGATEs for me. Thanks for bigg’ing up the manual. Getting stuck in an app, and having the support to figure out a solution, is half of an app. (The other half should imo be pure fun!)
Definitely! I really respect devs who respect their users enough toake a decent manual. Nothing pisses me off more than devs too sloppy to make a good enough manual 😅
It would be a dream to win MidiDREAMs :). Small note in the title of the video you missed a “i” in the MidiDREAMs. Might help SEO in the future if you tweak it. Great to have another rock solid midi app from a great dev. Thanks for the deeeeeeeep tutorial Gav.
Looks brilliant. I think it’s a “must have” (aren’t they all!). Thanks Gav. I read your info regarding ads but some of them are so frequent (ie the same set of ads repeating such as simple piano) that they drive me crazy. I can’t bear 30 seconds or more. I’m looking for a patreon link but don’t see one (I’ll check back later)
Sure thing, of course don't watch what you don't want to. I don't have a patreon yet, for various reasons, currently PayPal is the only way to make donations. Patreon is problematic fromany angles so I am still thinking will I do it or look for an alternative. Thanks for your comment 👍
HMMMMM...! Another sequencer..?! Count me in! This looks amazing ! Whenever I am on the go, I rely on sequencers mostly. Then at home, I bring in the actual instruments and performance parts to it all... This looks like a promising tool to use in both scenarios! For different things probably... but it seems like it could well be used in many ways to facilitate more intricate sessions. The fact that you can use a gate trigger is amazing, especially for weird stuff like maybe even automating effects based on the notes the sequencer outputs! IDK, so many things you could do with this thing.... I am pretty sure I've asked about your opinion about this app before, but perhaps you can already say a lot about this.... What I definitely am interested in, is putting it face to face with my favorite sequencer, Step Poly ARP. Regardless of how it compares, Step Poly ARP, Riffer, Poly, Aphelian and this one, are definitely the most interesting AU sequencers I've seen on iOS. And that's a PRETTY good range of options if you ask me! Especially considering each of them has their own strong points.
BTW, I prefer creating presets on the mappings of my drumming apps so that I don't have to find different mappings for my sequencers. That way I can keep a cohesive MIDI "dictionary" of what means what on a midi drum track (different channels and notes depending on the type of drum to hit). In Drum Computer this is pretty doable! it has a nice way of saving mappings. the only issue is I believe those mapping changes are NOT saved on AU sessions... so pretty much the same thing as the double glitch thing here, but once you create a mapping in DrumComputer you can save it on the app and just choose it everytime you load a session. Not ideal, but doable. Things should work just fine. This way, I can essentially use the same midi track to trigger any drumming app in the way that I want. I think it is FAR more convenient than approaching this the other way around (creating different sequencer mappings for different machines). I feel like I lose far less time this way!
Definitely Enrique, as you know, these kind of apps you can never have too much of. They all have their own pros and cons, and all lend themselves to different work flows. Always so fun to explore
@@GavinskisTutorials i did forget to mention I do create “ONE” mapping on all my sequencers, and that’s one to keep them cohesive in between them (lol), might seem like it defeats the purpose since at this point you end up doing two mappings, one for the sequencer and one for the drumming app... but once you do them they add up to the whole “system” and allow you to swap sequencers, or easily recognize what each note is supposed to be or etc. Hope that makes some sense because I spent a good few months doing things otherwise and it always felt far more time consuming in the long run :0, I ended up re-doing many things multiple times
I’ve just picked this up, wow super powerful, the gate trigger will be super useful to create variation that isn’t pure chance. Love to win midigates as they seem like a perfect match.
