Hey! I was wondering when us chickens could learn to play this??? I have an idea for a new magic class, Manusaii, which is just complete nightmare fuel and I really want to make it a thing for the learning mechanic. (Basically necro-hands.)
Ok, so basically you cut off people's hands, and they can do what they do best. A thief's hand coud Addams-Family style crawl across the floor, jump into someone's pocket, and steal their stuff, a warrior's hand could be good at cutting off people's hands and attaching themselves to take control of the body, and you could use a mage's hand to cast spells, like a scroll with multiple spells to choose from. There are only a few drawbacks. Thief hands will only follow your instructions 1d4 times, rolled by the Dungeon Master, and can try and trick you into letting it take some of your stuff. A warrior hand, after 2d4 attempts at a capture, will try to saw off your hand and take control of your body. Mage hands will always try to run, rolling sleight of hand (+4) every turn to try and squirm out, and will try and assist any rebelling warrior hands. If you do steal this, please give me credit... I worked *very* hard on this...
Going with the “ugly” bit of arcane ugly, I think there should be summoning, where you have to utilize monster parts to make a monster. The higher you roll, the better monster parts that your creature has. There would be a bunch of random bits and pieces, like a dragon wing and a panther leg are both added if you roll a ____. Just a suggestion.
I love the idea of a high DC to make your homuncudude. On a great roll you get a starter creature, that over time can have enchantments and other oddities add on. On a fail, well.... you made a swelll soup
Agghhh!!!!!! DUDE. What kind of genius are you hiding over there?! THE GIANT WITCHES IS THE BEST LORE I HAVE EVER HEARD TO DATE - I’M NOT JUST SAYING THAT I’M ACTUALLY SCREAMING RN
For the artifact + spell combo, if the players can do it themselves call it "imprinting" and have the effect determined by the verbage of the item they're attempting to make.
I love this - this really gets my creative juices going and would love to have a group of people to make something like this with. Thanks for your love and enjoyment. I really enjoy all of your videos and your style of creating/describing.
Love all the different types of mediums you use for your artwork. I’ve always liked sticking to what I know but I might enjoy working with pastels. Love the channel and can’t wait to see how your game turns out!
You seriously are one of the most creatively inspiring fantasy-centered hobby channels out here. Never change miscast..... unless its an accidental polymorph
Gosh, that way of handling how Magic comes to be is fantastic. The centre/deepest reaches of the earth being richer in magic because its "Closer to the Witches" is a brilliant jumping off point for fun lore bits! And the Potion system is stellar! Keyword based potionmaking is a fantastic leap away from the rigid magic casting/potion making that something like DnD has, and I love it! Can't wait for a proper release of this baby!
Just found your account and immediately started binging it the last few days because your content is absolutely fantastic and you're so deserving of more attention. Love it!
@miscast you're incredibly inspirational my dude. Just this video alone has got my brain boiling with ideas for my own foray into crating a tabletop rpg. Keep up the excellent work!
This series has inspired me to make a tabletop as well honestly it looks so fun to pour all the ideas you've had about how things could possibly work in a fantasy world into a tangible thing that is actually playable
Hey man, I really enjoy your content! Very inspiring and chill to watch! Wish you all the best for your RPG and am looking forward to the finished work!
Really looking forward to seeing the end result of this as it sounds crazy fun. All of the reasons you mentioned are the same reason I started to run Dungeon World games instead of D&D ones so this sounds right up my alley.
I had an idea kind of like the giant witches, in the sense that the lower in the earth you go dungeon-wise, the more strange things get. My explanation was that the world people know is a crust sitting atop the primordial chaos, from which all things in the material world arose at the beginning of time. The chaos is still down there, and its influence is more apparent the closer you get to it.
Last episode you mentioned that you wanted a random monster generator. A good source that I found is the random esoteric creature generator which is filled with cool ideas.
With all of these spellbooks, i keep imagining this godlt character called the "librarian" who is like this clarvoint watcher of all adventurers of this world, spectating their battles and observing their spell craft, logging every item and spell book created into his mystical library. (Avatar library episode is what keeps poppin in my head.) But anyway, i feel like this could spawn classic cultists and mage hunters that kill wizards and offer their books up to the almighty. And also, absolutely excellent name for those creatures. "The dreadful." Just gets you psyched doesnt it? Fantastic work mate. Looking forward to thr future.
His enemy is the iron-clad man, who preaches to his disciples that solid, dependable steel is all you need to make your way in the world, and all sorcerers are creatures of the dark, so should be burned along with their books (who needs reading anyway?). I can't wait to read the lore of this world. I dunno what it's gonna be like, but trusting Trent it's gonna be wacky and fantastical.
Maybe add a way to get bonuses on your study checks if you do something relevant to it while adventuring? Like if you're writing on Dragonology, you could get bonuses for digging up ancient dragon bones, interviewing dragons, helping out an NPC who is an expert in the field, doing something horrible and magic to dragon eggs, etc. etc. which you take back and use for your studies. Would be nice to give players some agency and extra connecting motivation. Would also help unlucky players finish their project if they work at it!
After half of the video I realised, that I am totally fascinated, how you are doing your art ... and I totally forgot, what you are telling about. It tollay calms me down. So thank you for this cool new video! (Now, I have to watch it again and this time, I will listen ^^)
It would be cool to see Character Journals so that maybe your in a different Game And your studying your old character or maybe Players can Conquer and found cities and Kingdoms
I was looking forward to this update! You inspired me to attempt my own system with your last video, and seeing this just makes me want to work on it more! Keep up the good work!
Okay seriously, please finish this project. Don't finish it soon or anything, i don't want you to rush it, but please follow it all the way through. As a DM I love this concept and I will be paying very close attention to this project and buying the hell out of it when it comes out. I already have a ton of ideas for what I could do with this and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Ive been making my own rpg from scratch for years now. I started with something that is now unrecognizable, but I am finally at a playable point (I have a finished players guide and bestiary!). Unlike you I wanted to make my own rule system. I am a fan of cards but found nothing I liked as a jumping off point, so it has taken a rediculous amount of time. I also knew from the start I wanted craftable magic, and melee characters needed to be viable at all levels, so that has been a huge focus. I've been playing with friends for a year now, and am finally past the trchnical stuff. I just started art, and I like the way you did it with friends. I tend to be very photo-real with my art, which tends to make it take forever. I may force myself to go fast and loose, pastels do look very good for that. I will have to give it a try!
Hey Trent, you mention Lev Grossman in this video. I would love a video where you give book recommendations for art or inspiration. Learning what books that creative people are reading is one of my favourite things, and I'm probably not the only one!
for the magic book making system you should be able to upgrade it overtime by maybe adding new spells or having it absorb something magical and getting stronger in general
Very late to see this, but it almost sounds like the spell books are kind of like magic "nets" that can catch the ambient magic in specific ways when exposed to it below ground. Cool concepts here.
You should totally make summoning a wacky part of your world! It would be great if there were several charts you had to roll on, as you aren't summoning something that already has a body, but giving some chaotic spirit a physical form, so what you get is pretty random (looks at rainbow-spitting demon-pig: "But I wanted something that could fly..."). Perhaps the more preperation you do the more bonuses you get, with high numbers having more powerful attributes (e.g. if you put in the summon soup the tonsils of a dragon you get a +15 bonus to the 'head' table). Maybe you could also have a table for if it runs out of your control with different levels of failure (hostile/agitated/free/friendly/controlled)? All in all, this is an amazing thing you're doing, and I can't wait to see more of this and the Nurgle diaries.
Hearing about the idea you had for magic coming from the ground in some way I would imagine areas with high magic radiation for lack of a better word would have people building their towns and whatnot on stilts making a very unique look to certain areas or even off the side of a cliff or suspended between two cliffs.
With regards to putting magic spells on items, you should check out Minecraft Dungeons, they use 'enchantment points' to put power up armour and weapons to for example deal more damage or deflect arrows. It's worth a look to get some ideas and adapt your game
Hey for the potion language you could have puns in it for example "moon" you could have a cow because they go Moo(n) or "egg" and have an Eggsited frog
Nice, if you didn't have the idea with the names for the Ingredients, I would have suggested something similar from some video game rpgs, where you can collect a ton of stuff, but all of them are tied to a certain element or category, like for example a birds beak or a dragon wing both fit into the air elemental, while a rock and a moles claw are earth.
omfg i can't tell how much i want to play this game, i love your esthetic and the way you think. Can't wait to get my hands on a final product. I'd 100% pay for this !!!! (i'll have to translate it tho)
This make me wanna make a rpg game but sci fi fantasy with my friends and where thinking about this awhile and it has make inspired and motivated to make a rpg gane and art. :)
The potions idea is nice, but what about a random potion generator. When you are out adventuring it might be hard to get your hands at decent Potion recipe, so what about just collecting some ingredients and throwing them into a pot. You could have a chart to roll on for each ingredient and in the end you determine a random effect, but the players have to drink the potions to know its effect. This could make for some really funny situations and might encourage players to hunt for rarer ingredient just to see what weird concotions they can come up with themselves.
I'm actually making a dnd like game similar to this called Tabletopia. Your character is a drawing on a piece of paper and you can collect items like Pencil Blade, Cardboard Helmet and more. I'm trying to go for a homemade crafty kinda theme for the game.
Did you ever think About Not having prewritten attacks? I find just putting boundaries on attacks much more fun like fe. You are a begginer stone mage so you can cast any spells with the stone properity that wouldnt be very hard to perform. I personally play “dračí doupe” whuch is a koval version of dnd where they handle it like this. I feel that its much intuitive for newbies to get right into it
