What's interesting about this game is that the character sprites gradually show details like blood and bruises as they take damage. That was quite unusual for fighting games at the time. As the only time when blood and bruises are shown is during the "stage clear" screen that show character portraits with the winner taunting a beaten up loser after the fight.

These old school games don't look good in sharp HD. They were made in an era of low res screens, and it's the low resolution that actually helped with the shading and blending etc. In sharp resolution you don't get that effect and it looks horrible.
