I remember watching this back in 2006 as a middle-schooler obsessed with star wars. A relic of a different era, this work of art - before clout, ad revenue, and social media - is a beautiful expression of genuine creativity and passion of the highest order.
As someone who only recently rediscovered this, I remember watching this in the early 2000s, this literally brought me to tears. It’s been so long and feels a lifetime ago. 😭
So I was researching lightsaber colors because I'm a nerd. Red lightsabers are made using synthetic crystals that focus the beam, because Sith can only get these crystals artificially. Natural ones come in different colors. Purple lightsabers belong to Jedi who tread close to the dark side and are aggressive and decisive. So the way I like to view this story, the author of the letter was a Sith who was a good person and had a family, but believed in Sith philosophy and that the Jedi were corrupt and obsolete. The guy with the two-sided sword was a Jedi assassin who specialized in fighting Sith and was sent to track him and take him down, because Jedi with purple lightsabers are less afraid to get their hands dirty.
OriginMSD Talk about necro bump, but to add weight to your theory, the Jedi were discouraged from having lovers(attachments and passions). Definitely seems like a short tale in the life of a Sith devoted to his passions.
Not all sith kyber crystals are red by synthetics. If you are extremely powerful you can force a kyber crystal to turn red. Vader poured all his pain, anger and rage into a kyber crystal bending the force to his will and forcing the Krystal to feel pain, in essence it bled and turned red. To my knowledge only sidious and Vader have bled their crystals. The process is dangerous enough to kill you, which is why I believe no others have successfully done it or attempted to do it as you literally need to bend the force to your will
Purple lightsabers only exist because Samuel L. Jackson insisted on it. George Lucas only wanted three colors: Blue for apprentices, Green for masters, and Red for villains. At a certain point that rule was thrown out of course
To this day this is my favorite duel of light sabers. Whether it's in the movies or not. The movies, while having obviously higher production values, always look like a dance - highly choreographed. This is also very dance-esque, but conveys more of a look of highly skilled warriors that just happen to be dancing due to their near-even match. Also the music and the letter bring it even higher, far above the sillier but similar fights on youtube. I wish it was more popular. 400k after 10 years is a decent amount but not enough imo.
I remember watching this for the first time back in 2007. The music and fight choreography bring back memories of the nerdy duels i used to do as a kid after watching this.
Nathaniel Jernigan I like the way you think. I only leave my comment open ended because I'm sure there may be sicker duels that may have happened/ are yet to come... Or do you know this and just plainly disagree?
Nathaniel Jernigan I just want to note though, I only leave my comment open ended because I'm sure there may be sicker duels that may have happened/ are yet to come... Or do you know this and just plainly disagree?
LegendByGod No, you've got me all wrong. I love this duel. In my opinion it trumps even the movie duels. Sure you could argue the digital effects are lacking, but these guys don't really need them. 20x Better than Maul's cheesy demise, and don't get me started on the Dooku vs Anakin duel in "Attack of the Clones". In my opinion Lucas should have just got these guys for the film fights. I don't doubt there are other great duels on youtube, but what I really find "sick" is the physical talent and ability these two are packing. Sure CGI can look cool, but it doesn't beat the real deal.
Nathaniel Jernigan So very true, I believe at least. You seem like you know a good thing when you see it- I feel like you and I, plus these guys, could make a sweet video. Where are they from anyhow, you know?
I'm SO GLAD I found this online on RU-vid, since the original copy I downloaded ages ago is on a failed hard drive. And I was just reminded of this epic piece of lightsaber battle movie history. Thanks for preserving this artwork for all to view here.
Whatever happened to these guys? Specifically Calvin (the guy with the 2 lightsabers)? Because this is absolutely amazing. Not only is the martial arts/fight choreography brilliant, but so is the cinematography and camera-work. There are so many camera-cuts, but the transitions between the angles still flow seamlessly. Wide shots like at 3:27 add a distinct kung-fu style to it. If he made this in his spare time as a youth, I'd love to see what Calvin could do directing an entire martial arts film. I saw this back in 2002 when it came out, and I bought AlamDV2 over it. I made a bunch of specFX videos of my own, but none could ever come close to matching the greatness of this.
Great Star Wars Fan film love how they use Black Hawk down theme it fits really well, star wars saber Master brought me back here star wars refresh January 17 2024.
Cary, Calvin and Clarence: I'm not sure if you even check this or receive notifications anymore. Just in case you do, I'd like to point out the entries below my own. It's now July of 2018. Many years have passed. Many new installments to Star Wars have come along. A whole new generation is now enjoying the films that inspired your work. And yet, here I am again, along with others, to tell you in no uncertain terms that, in some ways, nothing has changed. Even with a lower video resolution than is produced by some cell phones today. Even with wonderful fan creations like academies that teach light sabre combat and dueling. Even with all the advancements so many of us, as both viewers and producers of such, enjoy today. Despite all of the changes and advancements so many of us have experienced, and the passage of the years, this work of your still stands preeminent. IMHO this is, hands down, the best fan fiction light sabre duel l have ever seen. Period. The warrior's story based on a letter with it's spiritual elements, the selection of musical accompaniment to your piece, and the extraordinary talent the Ho brothers have shown us in this piece is still unmatched to this day. Gentlemen, you have made the unexpected and spectacular real for us all, and I thank you once again for this sharing of your vision and talents. I only hope, with all my heart, that the world at large has in some way repaid you for this gift that you've given to us all. May the force be with you.....always.
Mid 2019 & it crept back into my head to find this & watch again. Only other one that comes close is when they used portals to change the way they fall with no gravity.
So I remember watching this duel years back, I thought it was lost to time, but I once again have found it, one of the most amazing lightsaber duels I have ever watched, the quality is nostalgic too, didn't really notice it used Jedi Knight sounds until now, hello again, old friend. :)
Re-discovered this classic saber duel after 12 years. Still the best fan made ever. Love the simple back story but yet filled with deep emotional meaning.
Agreed! Nothing in fan films or even the Lucas series matches in terms of choreography and emotionality, for sure. "Luke, I am your father" was emotional, but this is next level.
This video still gives me the goosebumps to this day. Even though it is likely nearly 14 years old now (I believe the original was released in 2002) It has surly stood the test of time.
I first found this video many years ago, and it is still my favourite lightsaber duel. The music and the tiny bit of story, mixed with the awesome choreography is what makes this video great in my opinion.
i cant express how much i love this. i remember seeing this when the brothers put it up on youtube. i love every aspect of this film from the monologue throught the entire fight.
Please...do not leave this video to time, it will only be lost. I beg you, upload this again, as there are fans willing to upgrade the resolution so the story can be remembered! Stories like these need to be remembered, especially when the world is in such chaos over so many small and large things!
I know there are hundreds of lightsaber choreography videos out there, many that are of much higher quality, but for somehow this one has always stood out for me and captured a level of emotional none of the others can. I just wish it was in HD.
This duel stands the test of time. Still one of the best made. I have to note how much harder it was to produce a film like this 10 years ago. I hope the creators are proud of their magnificent work! May the Force be with you!
Damn I haven't heard seen this video in at least 8 years. When I heard this song in South Park just now, without missing a beat I instantly remembered this is where I heard it.
Still the best energy and precision in a fan made lightsaber dual. Its over-choreographed in a few parts but the Ho brothers are masters in their own right even way back then. I remember watching this for the first time in 2008. That was back when RU-vid was the shit.
Still one of the best fan lightsaber fights, all these years later. This was one of the videos that introduced RU-vid to me. I will never hear this song elsewhere, and not immediately go watch it again!
I like to watch this when im having a bad day, or just got done arguing with someone...just something about how majestic this film is, puts me at peace with myself...this will Never get old and to be honest im glad they didnt do anything else. perfect in everyway as it is.
Even though the RvD saber fights may be more complex, and use fancier effects in post-processing; they simply do not match the control and power of these two guys, obvious with their martial art training, these two fight much more like real jedi than any others I've seen outside the Star Wars movies.
Dang, I saw this at least 8 years ago and I can't believe how great this video has aged! Probably the best lightsaber fight ever choreographed. It's the music combined with the almost frantic jabs from the duelists that run a chill down my spine every time! What I like most about the fight is that it actually looks like they're trying to hit each other and not just trying to hit the other lightsaber. A+++++ P.S. We NEED a HD video of this because a lot of people need to see this!
I first saw this years ago, and remember being in tears, like right now. I still love it, and it is still the best lightsaber fight on RU-vid. The music choices are perfect, and the monologue does a lot to enhance the emotion of the film. First rate all the way.
This video is my favorite of all of the many, many lightsaber duel/fights. After watching this and other such duels on youtube. This one, in my opinion, is still be far the best. Because it tells you a story. It has an epic battle. And a tragic ending, but leaves you wanting more. That alone is just great. Something like this does not need super special effects. The martial arts alone, displayed here are truly phenomenal. The swordsmanship is outstanding. This truly is "The Art of the Saber".
