The winning portrait was my least favorite of the three by a LOOOOONNNNNGGGG shot. It was a nice, but very student grade, work.

I agree. Ross's painting is good but Liam's was far better. I seldom agree with their choices. They think art has to be bad to be interesting. Michelangelo's Sistene Chapel would loose to Edvard Munch's, The Scream if they were being considered.

Because the ugly and shitty ones win. Just look at what they choose. Such untalented, botched, unispired waste of canvas and it gets chosen over the actually good artists in the batch. Sad to see and of course, if shitty is what the jury wants, more and more people that cannot paint go to this competition and the good ones stay away.

If looking at many of the portraits in this series, I really have to question if some know how to really paint a likeness. And unspurprisingly, 90% of the sitters choose the painting that is the (conventionally) best excecuted painting, while the "experts" often choose absolute nonsene portraits. It sometimes makes me sad, to see really brilliant, talented artists loose to mediocre hobby-painters just because the judges want "off and quirky" rather than talented painting. This was one of those. Liam was phantastic, Lias was very good and Ross's paintings were shitty. Sometimes I think they do this just to anger the audience, because this was an insult to every talented painter.
