Watch Hannah Amuka, the High’s Coordinator of Gallery Experiences, discuss "Grana Chair" and the ways designers incorporate social responsibility and sustainability principles into their practice.
Moisés Hernández’s studio explores cultural traditions, diverse local textures, and color experimentation. Designed in 2021, Grana Chair is the result of a color study that investigated an innovative technique to color wood. Hernández and his assistant, Karla Rosales, immersed the wood in hot water mixed with crushed cochineal bugs (an Indigenous form of dyeing) and varying levels of acid and alkaline to create variegated shades. This object intentionally references a traditional method of dyeing textiles, which is rooted in Latin America, creating a natural, more environmentally friendly option for coloring wood.
