Hi everyone! I ask that you watch the WHOLE video before commenting; somewhere around the middle, I do make pro-tracing points. It’s important to understand a presentation in its entirety before creating a rebuttal. (This is also why I hate FB, people see the headline of an article and create a flame war without reading the article itself)

I’m going to say I started out thinking that tracing made me a good artist and didn’t find out this was bad for my over all progress until I was a year or two into it. I can PERSONALLY say that it was very bad for my progress and still am suffering from not creating my own stuff because I never actually learned anatomy or anything so trying to draw without tracing was too difficult for me.

I have Thoughts about this.. I've been drawing for 20 years as well and sometimes.. sometimes. I still trace poses. Just bare bones. Then change it up. Reposition an arm, or the legs,, or expand on the pose, etc. And then start actually drawing. Tracing a model takes 2 minutes and then i will spend about 3 hours on more sketching + lines, usually without any further reference. I dunno, I just don't feel like that's cheating anymore than drawing from the reference without tracing it would be cheating.

That's a very good point, and I mostly agree; I was more implying about when someone fully traces every detail, down to fingers and eyelashes. That doesn't give much room for learning and growth. Thank you for the extra perspective!

What do you think about finding a picture or screenshot and drawling it? As in someone else’s photo then you drawl it and give credits to photographer/ inspiration. I do it a lot to practice backgrounds or realistic placing.

The only things I trace and still claim as my work are photos I've taken myself, and usually only when I haven't been able to copy it over by eye for some reason (...ever try to draw a giraffe? I just could not get the eye right and ended up tracing the photo I took cause DANG they are weird. xD) And animal portraits. I do a very light sketchy traces to make sure that the markings are right if it's someone's pet, because I don't want to accidentally make it not look like their pet by missing some little mark or placing one wrong.

Ok so I like to draw pictures of my family so ill take a photo trace the outline of it and try and fill in the rest. What do you think about that? And how can I grow from that? I know you talked about it it the video, but I dont know how to start freehand. also I do this on my tablet.

There are some instances where tracing is okay. Specifically speaking, tracing life images. I completely disagree with tracing someone else’s art but drawing over a real image can in some ways be really helpful. Just my opinion because when I was a young artist tracing was kinda my thing, but I grew out of it and got better.

Did you watch to hear the point I made in the middle? I have a list of situations in which I think tracing is ok, and the one you just listed is one of them.

Is it okay to like take a sketch that I drew on paper and trace it digitally?

I personally don't see why not? At the end of the day you still drew it, you're not stealing someone's art or "cheating." I'm terrible at digital sketching so I trace photos of my paper sketches all the time.

OF COURSE!!! That's YOUR art, and you're just transferring media. I do it all the time.
