Timeline 🎬
00:00 The reason I started painting, the death of friends
00:49 Unchanging space, my workspace
01:28 "I'm not a full-time artist. I run a design studio."
01:50 "The faces I paint are not portraits of anyone. They are experiences."
03:06 The first painting I sold, 'Chemo.'
04:56 How I look back at my old paintings - Harvesting
06:00 The woman who got mad at my paintings, "This artist has serious issues, doesn't he?"
07:38 What I gained through painting - confronting the things.
Have you watched 'The Revenant' starring Kim Tae-ri? In episode 8 of 'The Revenant', there's a discussion about embracing darkness. A village lady mentions that if one keeps staring too deep into the darkness, one could get devoured by that darkness. I asked Jamie about this after watching the drama.
He mentioned that he found facing his own darkness more helpful than avoiding it. He said that the time he spent painting, giving himself enough time and space, had more meaning to him. We had the chance to hear more about this in his workspace in Hereford, England. You can find more details in the video!

Getting an emotional response from others is probably one of the greatest rewards for an artist

I really enjoyed this short and the work of J. Gallagher - his paintings and style remind me of how my head feels during violent migraines. The chemo painting too, i can relate. Watching my daughter go through not 1 but two cycles puts you in dark, helpless places. I look forward to more amazing content from you.

I find them quite lovely and revealing at the same time. There is a wealth of personal angst, but yet an indescribable peek into the depth of what it is to be human.

Don't like refering to other artists but Francis bacon echoes strongly & some of his emotional responses. Very human, emotional pieces of work..very touching & sensitive works, sometimes uncomfortable..love them....❤

Francis Bacon continues to exert an immense influence on subsequent figurative artists. It confirms his importance and it will be interesting to see if any of his disciples can survive such an overwhelming influence, as dangerous as Picasso was for late modernists - Bacon himself survived his exposure to Picasso (and van Gogh). Many didn't. Some of these works are interesting and beautiful, though more graphic than, say, Adrian Ghenie, probably the leading Baconite in the world. I think the lush paint takes away from the "trauma", of which the artist speaks, as it is so ice creamy and delicious. Perhaps the candied lushness is the 'therapeutic' aspect of the work? But no matter, he's an accomplished artist and one to watch.

Real post-impressionist abstract painting! You haven't tried large formats? And a question, which solution do you mix the paint, at min 8:01?

I do large format also. Maybe 1.5x2m no bigger yet. That substance is Spectragel ✌🏻

@liv0003

He's not like Francis Bacon, his work is very different. Francis Bacon, on the other hand, copied or, let's say, took a REALLY strong inspiration in his style from another painter ( a black man painter) who also was his friend but sadly much less famous than him. So neither Francis Bacon was so unique as you believe it was and the same can be said also for 99% of all the famous painters/artists for all the time. The majority of them took strong inspiration from or "copied" other artists, it has always been that way and it always will be that way and there is nothing wrong with that
