Hey everyone! Question: do you prefer to use HARD brushes or SOFT brushes? Let me know! :)

"Use the airbrush in such a way where I blend and unify the values within the forms but I don't want to blend the forms with each other. That's how you destroy your structure." 💯💯💯💯 Thank you for this. It really made me understand exactly how I always lose my forms when blending which resulted in a structureless drawing.

Do you just,,dont understand that you can change the size of an airbrush to result in more sharper edges?Or i am too confidently incorrect?

@@_just_an_garlic_bread_ it's just a different method to achieve an effect you like. It's fine either way *Depends on the style you like best. Neither way is wrong, this way is just to mimic the way a traditional brush or pencil would be used to blend.

I know the airbrush can give a general undertone of color to render on top of or underneath, but I myself never liked just relying on the airbrush for rendering cuz it took away too much texture and made things look too sim like

You know, I rarely if ever watch "art tutorial" videos, but this has really helped me realize that I've been holding myself back in a choke hold. I'd wondered why I'm so much better at rendering structures traditionally with pencils on paper than with any of my digital work. I think I really need to go back to basics digitally, and force myself to slow my roll before I continue my works, so I can be satisfied with what I'm making. This has been really helpful. I can't seem to edit my brushes the way you can, but I'm going to check if I'm able to in other programs I use. Thanks so much!!

Dude thanks for actually teaching people something, including myself. Far too many artists posting online gloss over things like this and it feels like they don't want to share their "secrets" if you will. I see so many speedpainting videos and trying out different styles but no simple explanation to things like rendering. I even asked a guy on Artstation to maybe show his working a little more, perhaps a timelapse to show how he does his excellent rendering, to which he liked the comment and proceeded to upload the same finished pieces plus 1 earlier sketch. When art is a learned skill, there is no secret sauce to making perfect art and we're all constantly learning so I don't know why so many people don't want to share their processes. To me, there is exploration of techniques and finding a balance of what works for you. I've been getting better at being more expressive in my art but I wanted to up my game in rendering and this is just the video I needed to inspire me and gave me some tips to try out and find my own way of implementing them. Great vid!

Very helpful tips! I love how you gave yours a hazy glow around the hair and face, which gives it a nice focus. I appreciate your tip on the airbrush, it's useful when achieving a gradient effect for general gradual shifts in value on your piece, but if used incorrectly will cause your drawing to lose shape and form. Definitely have to try this exercise out! 😁👍

@GeminEyeArt
@GeminEyeArt 3 месяца назад
Yeah I’m somewhat familiar, our process isn’t too dissimilar. The brush isn’t as soft as the standard airbrush. It’s somewhere between totally hard and totally soft, this gives you some of the precision from a hard brush while also giving you some of the blending of a completely soft brush. Handles more like graphite or charcoal.

amazing art and amazing advice! i think a lot of artists who are still trying to learn think that hard brushes are the antithesis of 'natural' looking or more 'realistic' art so they try to do it all completely with airbrushing, or that soft always equals 'realistic'. but in reality there are a lot of cases to be made and examples of both, and mixtures of each! and plus, sometimes, you don't have to make it completely "realistic" for it to feel *real*, yknow?

Yes the airbrush is well obviously depending on what program you is but the airbrush is not great it is very is useful for like your highlights but it's not useful for a whole render the reason why I don't know what it is but like simulating a hairbrush is difficult because the amount of particles basically it's not a great of viable option a viable option is to either use a round plus with a opacity at about 50% or even make it round brush where the Apache is low depend on how much pressure you use right and someone

@GeminEyeArt
@GeminEyeArt 9 месяцев назад
For a simple study like this I don’t typically set up the layers in any special way. Create a new layer, paint for a bit, if it looks good I merge it down, rinse and repeat. Before merging it down I’ll often duplicate the base underneath, that way it merges with the duplicate and I can flip back and forth to see the progression.

How does your brush go darker/lighter without touching the color wheel? When you start shading the sculpt, you seemingly start placing slightly darker and lighter colors without really ever touching the color wheel. Is it because of the brush options you have enabled? Reminds me that in other programs, like SAI, I use airbushes to create different values on a drawing then I color pick whats on the screen. Like the opposite of what you do, kind of? Many thanks for the tutorial!
@GeminEyeArt

I generally color pick from the canvas unless I need to grab a value or color that isn't on the canvas yet.
