“When I am Next to You is my new portrait, 12x9” oil on Allinpanel #532 by Artefex. This was my first time painting on this panel. I chose it because it’s Extra Fine Linen canvas lead oil primed, which means that you can only paint with oils on top. Lead white oil primer was used almost exclusively through last 450 years. I liked the texture of the board it was a little bit more toothy and absorbent than Alcotpanel, but it would be absolutely perfect for my still life and landscape painting. Trying new surfaces is very fun, sometimes it’s a perfect match to your way of painting, the texture, the absorbency of it, other times it challenges you and forces you to adopt to it, maybe use less medium and more paint, maybe use different brushes or the way you make a brushstrokes. As a result you might come across the new way of painting or solving painting problem. If you allow for possibilities you will be receptive to learn new, if you always do things the same way, well it becomes boring.”
