What an unexpected, radiant and peaceful conclusion to this symphony - like the calm after a storm.

This is a wonderful work and it is a great shame that it isn't performed much in the concert hall. The coda - as already mentioned - is beautiful and haunting. Many thanks to The Wellesz Company for uploading this work. If only the BBC would feature some of Honegger's symphonies at The Proms ? We can but hope !!

Laurence Skelding it’s true. This is a great as any Shostakovich orchestral piece yet not nearly well known enough. Honegger composed amazing volcano music too.

This first symphony by Arthur Honegger dates from the maturity of the composer (1930). For those who read the music, the score can be found on IMSLP. It is possible to understand why this symphony is said to be in C major, and the distance to the traditional harmony that it implies. But clearly, the ear does not consider it as atonal and perceives attracting poles all along the work. Honegger became a pessimistic man step by step, but his was not the case in 1930 - at least apparently. This symphony is full of vital energy. Even the slow movement avoids to be mellow. Brasses and piccolo often lead the music of this slow movement. Of course, there are moments of tension and moments of relaxation, as the classical language commands it. But ht music is irresistibly pushed forward by its own energy. This move stops some bars before the end, and the conclusion is pacified. The further symphonies will be more ambiguous in terms of positive feelings, so this one appears as unique in the set of the five symphonies of Arthur Honegger. Vaclav Neumann has the reputation of a fine interpret of Honegger. This can be verified here.

Gérard Begni I hear jazz elements in his work. Some small themes in the brass. 5:30

Thank you for uploading this wonderful piece, though you have mistakenly written that it was written in 1930, when it in fact dates back to 1931.

Did I just hear "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens" here (11:40)? Omigosh, did Richard Rodgers rip off Arthur H the way he did Franz Waxman for "Bali Hai"?
