It's a beautiful thing that's impossible to hold in your hands. The moment you think you've got a grip on it, it slithers away and dances somewhere else.
Brings me back to a couple of years ago in college in Cork city. I don't listen to his music as regularly as I did then, but when I do its something special.
Oh, I just discovered Arthur Russell through researching Aphex Twin! and my mind is completely blown. I instantly fell in love with this enigmatic sound and his voice is very distinctive and haunting. This exceptional music owns the key to longevity. Much love! ~X~
@@ALEMAC92 Probably that they're both exceptionally hard working musicians with particular visions for their creations... That's what I'd guess at least! :)
I'm guessing Arthur, like a lot of people, had dysthymia, which is consistent low level depression that pervades their entire life. Listening to his music puts me in that space, bittersweet, sad, but beautiful.
@@Daniel_Delayne man that comment was wrote a year ago, time seems to pass so quick as I get older. Anyhow you called it, just when you think things can't get worse they will. Still... got to keep on going I guess.
The verses are C-D-G (IV - V - I). Prechorus is C-G-C-D (IV - I - IV - V). Chorus is G-em-C (I - vi- IV). The pre-verse instrumentals go between G-C. As they say, country music is 3 chords and the truth.
man he is so down on his later material. i hoped he went back to disco at some point, forget all pain and worry, just make great great danceable careless music like he started with some disco records
@@workrelated2613 yeah i know. it was so dreadful though. honestly i cannot listen to it. i just wish he made more alternative type of records where happiness prevails before death. why do people have to document their own dying, when they can liberate themselves through joy? and what he did was his personality and i respect that. he didnt have to please anyone at all. im just sharing this from how i view it personally. I felt dread and sadness and not comfortable. Patrick Cowley went down with the most joyous sound in the world, and he was actually one of the first AIDS victims and died back in 82. But everyone is different, of course. I love and respect Arthur Russell music, but its super uncomfortable for me to listen now days!
+ZeranZeran Just a little background, when he recorded his cello work including this song he had throat cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy (he would eventually succumb to his illnesses), so I imagine he was often anemic while he continued to work and record. Once you see the lyrics you can then pick out what he's say clearly enough.
