Swing time music I ‘m 85 , …..grew up in Brisbane in the 40es the US submarine base was just down the road at the end of our street……the sub mothership showed movies on a big screen on the deck and the ships band would play all the latest swing time. It was a local treat to be taken down to Dalgety wharf to sit on the loading dock across the road and enjoy the sight and sound….still close my eyes and picture the these times when I hear swing music

Goodman had technique, but Artie had soul and a magic fluidity. One made you drop your jaw and the other moved you inside with maybe a little jaw drop side dish. Both great in his own right, but quite different. Artie takes it for me, but to each his own.

To my ears, big band sound never gets old. Some rock music never gets old either, but that's hit and miss for me. But if you walk into a swanky restaurant with a dream date, which band would you prefer? That's a personal choice, but my preference is still big band. Sure, it does have associations with times before my time, but my parents enjoyed it, and they danced to it, and I've seen movies that feature it, some in my childhood. So, to my ears, big band music has a down-home sound that still sounds fresh and upbeat.

Just another example of how Artie Shaw was a Master Jerk. For more details on his craziness read Evelyn Keyes’ memoirs, available for free on the Internet Archive. She would get in trouble with Artie if she did not arrange his cigarettes in a particular way, or did not have his favorite ashtray at his chair. Artie gave a previous wife, Lana Turner, a nervous breakdown. He must have had some sort of personality disorder, not sure which one. But the guy was a genius, despite his bad personality. @@None-zc5vg

Susie, People listen to music from the past because it is often more sophisticated than todays. People feel that this genre of music is superior to today's because today's is often repetitive and doesn't have as much work or thought put into it. I don't blame anyone for wanting to "stay in the past," but I do believe we should be open-minded to some of the great music today, although it's hard to find at least decent music these days. Let them admire music and culture of the past if that's what they want to do.

Shaw and Goodman should never be compared. When one receives two Aces dealt one after another, you know that Dame Fortune is smiling upon you. Just consider that Goodman was born in May 1909 and Shaw in May 1910. Both were of Jewish backgrounds. Has to be more than a coincidence, they were obviously meant to compliment each other. Fate was in a benevolent mood and we should just rejoice in their legacy.

@@ianboard544 Artie was incredible, but, to my ear, Chick Webb had the greatest big band ever. Glenn Miller and Count Basie had the tightest. Duke Ellington and Artie Shaw had the most lyrical. Benny Goodman and Webb had the bands that played best out of anyone on the biggest stages. Just my opinion.
