I will show tips and tricks for printing thin wall with this Artillery Sidewinder direct drive printer. I also print a full 3D printed RC airplane and give a review on the process.

Congratulations on your SWX1! I had perfect results with generic PLA off Amazon right out of the box, however I started having issues with ABS, because it required bed @ 100°C all the time, at 100°C bed was sagging in the middle, so first layer on larger objects was a huge challenge, luckily I got it solved by using ABL, that though required upgrading firmware, I ended up using the stock Z axis sensor as ABL and whambam bulid plate -everything sticks to it rock solid at the same time its easy to remove without damaging thin wall prints. I tried using glue stick on the stock bed but 28hr long ABS came off with pieces of glass plate, Artillery was super nice and shipped replacement bed for free. So i highly advise using a quality PEI sheet like whambam. Also custom firmwares are mostly based on fresh merlin which includes linear advance, which is along with acceleration when tuned properly yelds super sharp corners and even sides at 100mm/s perimeters , 150mm/s infill and 65mm/s small perimeters with generic PLA.

This was literally what I have been waiting for...I have been contemplating getting this printer and comparing it to the cr10...but the direct drive makes a huge difference. I was wondering how well the sidewinder would do with rc airplane printing. You answered it. Thank you.

The Sidewinder is a good start. i got a heavily modified Ender 5 :) 2mm retraction for a direct drive is pretty huge. im at 0.5mm retraction at 30mm/s and got no stringing issues. For Bed adhesion i use a mirror with hairspray on it - sticks like hell when the glass is hot, releases itself when cooled down to 35°C. Works just as well for PETG, releases at about 45°C

Hey thanks for goin thru your settings and process. I don’t have sidewinder, but I do have an ender 3 with a direct drive printer mod. Your retraction settings worked flawlessly on my set up with no adjustments and equal results. Can’t believe the quality thanks. No more stringing.

I use Elmers purple glue stick for adhesion. It really works, it's cheap and it cleans up super easy. A 30 pack cost me $8 on Amazon. All I do is run the glass print plate under warm water and wipe it off with a paper towel. Apply glue, print, rinse and repeat.

I wish I would have found this a good minute ago. Trying to print 3dlabs P51D on a mostly stock Ender 3. Using Overture Silk Silver...and this has been a struggle bus event for sure. Finally got a good part last night. Still needs tweaked, but I am going to follow what you have done here, flow test and more importantly the retraction test. The silk material, finding out is VERY picky when it comes to retraction settings and not having the tip clog causing under extrusion. 1 mm retraction. 25mm acceleration. Retraction prime at 0.2. I think I can increase the retraction by 1mm and up the prime to 0.3 to deal with the stringing. Any more retraction than 3mm causes clogs and under extrusion with the silk on my printer. Thank you for sharing your set up.

I was a bit amazed at how meticulous your revision of the Cessna 172 ??? was. I built the Aeronca Champ because that was the plane I soloed in (Jan 2, 1963, I’ve been around for a l o. n g time). Anyway I know where I want to put the printer but I’ve got a ton of old drones and never started kits in the way.also a never set up printer/XY carver whose bed was too small. Ive found for the Creality printers, Their own E-fit 3:1 direct drive extruder kit works great with their Spider hotends. They aint new and their nothing super fancy but thats why they work amazingly well. There also a great bolt on replacement for the baby KP3S kingroon which is great for printing the smalls for the RC planes. For the Enders you do have to adjust the firmware a smidge but a couple of sample prints later, youd be happy with the results.
@KaelumYodi

There are 2 things that you might want to try as well. First, don’t place the filament spool on top of the printer. With the spool up there, you have an inverted pendulum, which creates ringing, and could also be causing the imperfections that you discussed. Put the spool somewhere else and just run the filament over the printer. Second, try reducing the retraction distance even further, and increasing the speed to 60mm/s or higher. It may sound counter intuitive, but it usually works. I don’t have a Sidewinder, but on the 2 printer that I do have, I have the retraction distance set to 0.4mm, and the speed at 65mm/s on one printer and 100mm/s on the other. Have a great weekend!

I assume you have a printer with direct extrusion?! I had pretty good results with an anycubic with Bowden. After calibrating the extruder, and slowing the print speed and decreasing the layer hight, I had really satisfying results. He's having some issues I have not seen yet. An interesting comment, particularly the filament roll on top. Makes sense! The anycubic has it on the side, but something I will think of when I will get another printer. Thanks.

A great start is the Creality Ender 3 for around $210, or get Ender 3 V2 with the better processor for $260-285. You need to swap out the springs for the bed leveler, I got 12 for $8 on Amazon, only need 4 of them. The springs that come with it are crap. New springs are a must. The micro SD card reader won't last either but you can get a good one for $10 or less. All kinds up upgrades including a direct drive for $40 or less if you catch it on sale on Banggood. For $250 you can extender kit and print big.

I have an X1 version 4, I wound up adding a Z hop for moves to avoid the extruder tip catching on thin walls and the internal structures. I also us a 2 layer brim about 6-8mm around the part on some of the thinner pieces and they really stick good and don't warp. I then use canned air with a blow tube and the cool air pops the brim right off the bed.

@santiagoblandon3022 3 года назад
No problem, Linear Advance is a feature you can activate in the firmware of the 3d printer(given that the control board has enough memory left) that compensates for the compresion on the filament path. So the bulgy adges or the underextruded starts of extrusion paths disappear. Look up "teaching tech linear advance" in youtube. He explains it better than I can :D

Hi great video, have you tried the supplied g code from 3D lab print on this printer for lw-pla? Or do you alway slice your own with cura
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 3 года назад
I only slice my own setting. I did not try just loading the G code

@@TroyMcMillan I have just printed the Albertross from 3dlabprint in lw pla using the supplied g codes and it works fine on the sidewinder x1. Finish looks fantastic

@@paulmason6847 Did you make any changes to the printer I have one coming and hope I can print out of the box with gcodes
@paulmason6847
@paulmason6847 3 года назад
@@johnkearney9339 no changes, it just prints right from the G code, only thing I found was due to the shape being long and thin for the wing sections - I would get a little warping near the ends, I stopped this by using masking tape on the bed, never normally use masking tape but it works fantastic.

How do I go from a design in autodesk fusion 360 to the 3d printer? Will the slicer put in the joints to glue the components together or is that done at the design stage?
@TroyMcMillan
@TroyMcMillan 3 года назад
it is done in the design stage, you have to do that in fusion 360

@@timothygiggey1610 yeah check out fusion 360 for designing them, it works great. It's a lot of fun when your design is printed out too :) the glider is an amazing plane, good luck with it!!

Hi Troy what program are you using to convert 3d lab print object files into gcode thank

I use Cura for all my prints. You can slice 3d lab prints planes in Cura it is a bit more difficult to get a good print.

You offer some good ideas but your audio sucks... buy a good wireless and when you do your edit listen through headphones since your levels are inconstant. One minute the level is too low and the next you blew me away.

$400 printer and you're wrapping the bed in masking tape?!? Open the door to the room and the draft kills 12 hours worth of printing?!? Yea, this is really mature technology. They should include a Commodore 64 to run it. I too can print a model of the Icon A5. For the cost in time and waste of an actual Icon A5. You are to be commended for your patience.
