I was 14 in '73 and remember exactly where I was the first time I heard their first album. A WI kid, that southern rock spoke to my soul and just blew me away. They are, and have always been, my favorite band. I like to ask this hypothetical question of my friends: "You're on a deserted island and you can have the musical catalog of one artist to listen to. Who would it be?" My answer? Lynyrd Skynyrd. And there's a good reason I became a drummer at 18, too: Thank you Bob Burns & Artimus Pyle.

Playing Artimus` and Bob`s drum parts was a real workout when I was in a working band playing several times per week for over a decade. I was usually singing too. Thanks guys! We miss you Bob!

Hey Joe... i think that sounds like a good name for a song... LOL .... JOE, Ive wondered about this for a long time. In 1985 I Believe belive, Toto came to Florence, Alabama to do a show. Ive read that TOTO'S tour manager noticed that the band was nervous. He had never seen the band nervous before a gig. but on this night, there were very important people in the audience. They were the muscle Shoals Rhythm section, better known as the Swampers. Ive always wondered if that was considered to be the passing of the musicians torch. I can imagen Jeff being a little antsy with the great Roger Hawkins in the second row and you have to think Hungate didn't want to screw up in front of little David Hood, and the GREAT guitarist Pete Carr drew the atention of Steve lukather and the musical genious of the Great Barry Beckett was right in front of David Paich! Was it just coincidintal that they came together at the same time? The legendary Swampers were aging and knew it was time to turn the page and did so that night in Flornce, Alabama. Does that look plausible to you?
@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum
@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum 2 года назад
Hi Ken…. I’ve found that these great players are probably more star struck than the average person because they know how good their peers are. All the guys you mentioned are my friends and I personally know how they feel about each other. Total respect. Steve Lukather is so respectful of the session guys before him. Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers is a huge fan of Hal Blaine and Roger Hawkins etc. When the Eagles played here in Nashville years ago Glenn Fry said we’re nervous tonight playing here in Nashville… we know who’s out there in the audience so I expect you’re right that the TOTO guys were well aware of the Swampers being in attendance….. best, Joe

It's so honorable to hear Artimus Pyle giving Bob Burns his due consistently one and off camera. Thank you to both drummers, but it's true that "Bob" was a crucial ingredient part of LS early growth, vibe and success. There are so many other songs that aren't mentioned that Bob played on that are just phenominal, imo. What he says about RVZ is spot on. Godd stuff, thank you.

I met Artimus last summer and played with him at a benefit. What you say is true, whether on stage or just talking to a few people he was constantly self-effacing and praising other musicians and saying he was just along for the ride basically.

@@Cristofre That's great to know! I have a buddie that plays bass in VA and he said he ran into him a few times where the band was jamming and said the same thing you are saying. Talked with him and the whole nine yards. 🙂

I lurked around on the fringes of a bar one night after a Lynyrd Skynyrd show when Artimus and Leon were holding court and telling old stories. I can't even remember any specific incidents from that night, but both of them ended up saying Hi and shaking my hand, and of course I fanboyed all over them. They both paid attention to the fans, and that's something to be praised. I love this band and just wish it could have all been preserved. Long May They Run! #Peace!

The fact Artimus brings up Bob - and went out of his way to seek Bob out - & help Bob - that's special - a special bond - most people who replace or are replaced don't exactly gravitate towards one another - it's a testament to Artimus - Artimus has always given Bob credit - as he should - Artimus is my favorite drummer - his words on his 40th birthday - in Louisville ,Ky hit me with an almost mystical force - in 1989 Edit - PS - when anyone speaks of someone who is the "greatest" guitar player or "underratated" I bring up Steve Lukather - Dude is a phenomenal takent - and seems like a nice fella -

Saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in San Diego, 1976. I was in the Navy. A friend from Arizona, saw me in the hallway of the barracks. He said "Gil do you want to go see LS tonight?" I said "Man I'm broke, I can't go." He handed me a ticket, said "I've got duty tonight." (Meaning he had to sit at a desk, walk through the barracks every 15 minutes, come back, sit down & write "Toured barracks, All secure.".) So I hitch hiked down to the Sports Arena (I think that's what they called it). The Outlaws (who I'd never heard of opened for them) they were great to be honest. Any way that's my story, saw them for free. Don't remember exactly when the plane crash was, but I saw them before that.

Artimus Pyle is one of the greatest drummers that's ever walked on stage and I was having to see a specialist in Nashville and Artimus had his own gig going on and I never did get to go see him but I still have nothing but Respect for him even though things still aren't good between him and the others . And ill never forget watching him talk about blowing the Rolling Stones off the stage and that was when the Stones supposed to play after them but I think they were pretty upset because Skynyrd brought the house down.

I totally agree about artimus's drumming, all one would have to do is listen to " gimme back my bullets" which in my honest opinion is one of their best albums where they actually got " heavy " and the style of song writing was a lot different from the others! I love Skynyrd!

An interesting individual and a musician with much passion for what he does,it goes without saying. Artimus can really 'paint a picture' of another musician he is talking about. Another musician ,I have seen ,,didn't have a clue what his name was,until seeing this interview & what a kind hearted person he is,and I don't know Artimus from Adam. . Thank You Joe for this interview with Artimus Pyle.
