Passive fish traps are among some of the oldest documented relics from indigenous cultures all over the globe. Stone weirs built many hundred years ago in rivers and low tide areas still exist today.
Funneling fish for easier capture was a strategy used to put food on the table in almost every primitive culture. While different trap designs exist, there is one design that seems to be universal - the woven funnel trap.
Whether made from bamboo in the wetlands of Asia and South America, reeds on the coast of New Zealand or grapevine in the forests North America the funnel basket trap varied only slightly in design across multiple continents and cultures.
There are essentially two parts to the funnel basket trap: the body and the inverted cone cap. Lured by the scent of bait, the fish enter the main trap body through the inverted cone shaped cap. Once inside they aren’t smart enough to figure out how to get back out.

The trap depicted on the video, called "covo de pesca" in the southeast of Brazil, is no longer used nowadays by seu Miguel Buta. He said he learned the craft from his father when he was a child and stopped using it recently because, after him, the bait of bread or sardines is very expensive.
Seu Miguel Buta lives on the banks of the Paraíba do Sul river since his birth. His abode, as well as part of his family's abodes is in the outskirts of the very industrialized town of São José dos Campos, in the southwest of Brazil. Some of his sons still fish, bat not to make money, just for leisure. Instead, Seu Miguel still delivers his production in the local market every saturday.

Much to be said for craftsmanship. There was time when everything we built possessed both a practical and an artistic facet. This guy's trap is just as effective as décor as a fish trap. Makes you wonder about some of those survivalist you see on television. Their traps look like something someone ran over with a truck, yet the have the same tools available to them that this guy utilized. Makes me want to run down to the river bank and cut some cane.

MaZEEZaM It is all about being self sufficient and in harmony with nature. Nature provides us everything we need and the urban population needs to be reminded of this simple fact. Thanks for the comment.

Personally im in a semi rural location, I live by a river but I agree. I wanted to learn to make one of these traps as I never catch anything with my fishing rod and thought I would have better luck with this style of fish trap and I much prefer the use of natural products that will fairly easily break down if left out in the environment rather than say using a mesh to create a similar shape even though it would be much easier and faster. I also like the creative side to making it. though it would be a great deal of work.

old folks in our province used to make the same bamboo fish traps in just couple of hours, when rivers were still filled with various kind of fish, eels, shrimps and crabs, but now only janitor fish is there , they dont make these traps anymore and young ones didnt learn the skills

Great looking trap. would love to try a trap like that up here in Northern BC, Canada. Shame that he cannot use it these days because bread that he used for bait is too expensive. We use heads and skeletons of fish after processed for bait in Crab traps. I am betting he could use some of the scraps left from cleaning previous fish or animals as bait.

Their superstitions and fairy tales are so cute, aren't they? LOL "cut the bamboo at a new moon and it will not rot". So funny! "primitive" fish trap. Uses rubber coated electrical wire to build it. *rolls eyes*
@thetruesweetheart
@thetruesweetheart 6 лет назад
I think the "fairy Tales" are really about understanding the seasons, the temperatures and the humidity. Environmental factors that affect the drying and degradation of the natural materials. We have the same "myths" here where I live that relate to harvest in the fall and to planting of seed in spring relating to frost and to rain cycles and yes..the full or waning moon...etc...to just say "new moon" means more than just a Fairy Tale. That is the knowledge that is special and has been passed down generations because of the knowing, in short hand, that is lost in this "modern society". We just can't understand it or "trust" it unless the Weather Channel tells us so therefore we are so out of touch with the deep timeless knowledge and knowing how to "read" those signs of natural rhythms of our environment. The artisans way, and that is the definition of Artisan, should be cherished and preserved for the preservation of all of us. Appreciate this and hope there are more Artisans out there that will continue to share. Great video...
