Fons Americanus is a 13-metre tall working fountain inspired by the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace, London. Created by artist Kara Walker for the 2019 Hyundai Commission, it is one of the most ambitious installations in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall to date.
Rather than a celebration of the British Empire, Walker’s fountain explores the interconnected histories of Africa, America and Europe. She uses water as a key theme, referring to the transatlantic slave trade and the ambitions, fates and tragedies of people from these three continents. Fantasy, fact and fiction meet at an epic scale.
Based in New York, Kara Walker is acclaimed for her candid explorations of race, sexuality and violence. She is best known for her use of black cut-paper silhouetted figures, referencing the history of slavery and the antebellum South in the US through provocative and elaborate installations.
Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world’s most memorable and acclaimed large-scale works of art, enjoyed by audiences of millions each year. This is the fifth installation in the ten-year series of the Hyundai Commission following the work of Abraham Cruzvillegas in 2015, Philippe Parreno in 2016, SUPERFLEX in 2017 and Tania Bruguera in 2018.
Fons Americanus is on display at Tate Modern until 5 April 2020. You can explore the artwork in more detail here: bit.ly/35XBdnx

Some people in these comments are so disgusting. I can see why Kara walker was so hesitant about including race and identity in her works.

Kara Walker: "I'm not an actual historian, I'm an unreliable narrator..." It's the very unreliability of our narration, fallibility of our memories, imperfections in our efforts, that we come to know who we really are and learn who others are. It reminds me of a quote from V from Vendetta: "Artists use lies to tell the truth. Yes, I created a lie. But because you believed it, you found something true about yourself."

Yes, same actually! Sometimes a concept is too complex and too full of possibilities, it's like trying to make a castle out of dry sand. Nothing sticks. Expressing yourself through another medium can help tremendously - writing, painting, sculpting, etc.

I can not understand why this is going to be destroyed and not transplanted to another more permanent place; not a fitting end for a work so wonderfully thought out and artistically created.

I'm so disappointed to have learned that the gallery chose to destroy her work. The only solace I can find is that it is like a mandala, washed away by the sands of time, yet we still have these images and people's experiences at the fountain to inspire generations to come. We're learning about this piece in a unit in my art history class right now!

Of what material is the fountain made? What is she working at 4.30? Not sure if some sort of plaster maybe?
@unchillada5858
@unchillada5858 4 года назад
Looks like it's jesmonite, which is a mixture of plaster (gypsum) and resin. I was curious as to why it appeared so much like plaster but was somehow water resistant...There's much more info on the process in the nytimes article about the artwork. The diversity of materials and manufacturing processes available these days is really mind blowing

I'm sure she's aware as it's not a secret to most black folks; however, I'd imagine she can only speak from an American perspective. Media and Race takes on a different meaning in our context over here in the US and she created a piece specific to that voice. Case and Point, America allowed for the creation (and shipwreck) of Kanye West. No English artist can really speak about that without it being by proxy of American History.

America benefited hugely from slavery and the money from it. White nationalism, what about black nationalism? Trying to say it's a place of joy is ridiculous. The impact isn't as great as people want to say it is, maybe with the subject some don't want to be too critical. The figure at the top and the three spouts of water cascading down are the most impressive parts, the next section down looks too caricaturist and the the other parts feel too bitty. One part of the sculpture in front is actually completely separate from the rest. It feels more about the concept than the execution, I can't believe there haven't been more impressive things in that hall.

Because, of course, *EVERYTHING* is race and gender, race and gender 24/7/365. The “patriarchy* made it possible to “liberate” women. Slavery existed in all times and places, but it was the West that ended it. Get a perspective and give it a rest.

" I'm really interested in making work that explore the power struggles and history and mythologies that inform the way we perceive ourselves and the way we perceive others." There are honorable, sensible ways to explore race and gender. Where do you see Kara Walker falling into the unwise, ideological way they're often explored today? I don't see it. Your reaction appears to be founded on a hasty generalization.
