A quick take discussing rap artists calling out Jay-Z and the NFL for selecting Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne to perform at the Super Bowl. Several rappers such as Cam'Ron, Nicki Minaj, Birdman, Master P took to social media to voice their disagreement at the decision to have the West Coast rapper take the stage at the upcoming Super Bowl LIX. Media pundits Big Boy and DJ Akademiks also chimed in voicing their support for Lil Wayne and stating their disbelief that he was not chosen to perform in his hometown of New Orleans. Kendrick Lamar's career would reach another peak following his highly publicized feud with rapper/singer Drake. The two would release several dissed tracks aimed at each other, the most popular being Kendrick's Not Like Us, which would reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and effectively end the beef between the two. Kendrick is the latest in a tradition spanning decades where popular artists headline the half time show. In this quick take we give our thoughts on the selection of Kendrick Lamar instead of Lil Wayne as well what we believe went into the decision.

Kendrick is a world class live performer that also knows how to put on a spectacle. One of the few in Hip-Hop I would even say that about. For anyone that’s seen his Arena/Stadium shows, and Grammy Performances you know what I’m talking about. Missy Elliott, Tech Nine, Tyler the Creator, Busta Rhymes, and DMX (RIP) would also make my short list. There’s obviously some others in the convo we could argue all day. With that being said not only do I not consider Wayne to be a Supreme Live performer, I don’t know if the music itself works well across Middle America, and all age demographics. Kendrick is the first real solo Rap act to headline the Super Bowl ever. What you don’t want to do is put someone out there that doesn’t put on a show and possibly ruins the chances of another Rap act getting the nod. This is a great pick to represent the genre and the culture on a world stage.

They do. Rhianna was locked in by May the year before hers. They create the shortlist immediately following the previous super bowl. Then, they work with the artists on the shortlist to see who is down to do it and available for the date. Then, by April or May, the city selects the final artist from the shortlist of approved and available artists. The CITY chooses.

I believe he was already on the list before the beef because of his participation as a feature with Dre. They consider people in advance because they must vet all recommendations to protect their brand. Once they narrow it down to a few, the city decides. It's all about marketing appeal, dollars, and cents. This isn't as personal as they are making it to be, it's business.

Bro who do you think is buying the tickets for the Super Bowl? It’s not gonna be Wayne fans that afford the game. Also the artists pay to go and perform at the SB. They do not get paid at all. When was the last time Wayne had a chart hit. The LA shit was just a nostalgia trip because it’s been 30 years. Wayne is within the last 10 years for his prime

@@fracturedsolace145 Not crapping on Wayne but he is a legend in hip hop and a name most people know outside of hip hop. Average Americans, outside hip hop circles, know his name but they do _not_ know his music. I live in Ohio and I am promising you, the average 42 year old NFL fan in middle America could not tell you one Wayne song. They probably know A Milli but don't know it's Wayne. He is the 22nd most popular rapper and the 543rd most popular artist between Smashmouth and Stone Temple Pilots, neither of whom have performed at a super bowl. Though, Smashmouth did play a pre-game show at bar in Miami for the 2020 SB. Those are real numbers based on yougov data. People are way underestimating the disconnect between Black and White America... dude in this podcast just called some of the biggest artists of all time "some guy I never heard of" repeatedly. He said, "I don't know who Coldplay is." Coldplay are twice as well known as Little Wayne (they're the 242nd most famous artist of all time). And you think the average viewer of the NFL, outside hip hop, knows Wayne because we do? C'mon.

It has always seems to me that Jay-Z currently only fights with his worth. To get it bigger and bigger. I believe thats why he went with KDot. The super bowl is a national event. So I do not think the claims that "It makes sense for Wayne to be performing since its his home town." have much merit.

They don't pay to be there. What are you talking about? Halftime performers are not PAID to perform at the SB. The NFL pays for their stage. But a few artists wanted to go way over budget and paid for the stages they wanted (Beyonce was one of these, for example.) Other than that, I don't know what you're on about.

Why was Nicki selected to appear as Madonna's cheerleader at the Indianapolis super bowl in 2012? None of the performers are from Indy. M.I.A is Sri Lankan or something, right? I mean, John Cougar Mellencamp is a local legend in Indiana. And a legacy act. Axl Rose is from there too but Guns N' Roses already did Super Bowl Half Time shows in Texas and Miami. Babyface is from Indiana - he could head up an ensemble of artists he produced for and songs he sang like Dr. Dre did and it would be incredible! David Lee Roth from Van Halen is a legacy act and local legend in Indy, too. Little Big Town is from there. All those acts are huge, widely known, right up the alley of what the NFL usually looks for, and local. But no one asked them to play, no one expected them to, and no one cared because the super bowl has never been local: not the teams, not the refs, not the fans in the seats, not the media, and not the halftime performers. Only 6 or 7 stadiums even QUALIFY to host a super bowl and it would be absurd to limit a global audience to local artists from the same 6 or 7 cities year after year. Which is why when the hosting CITY chooses a headliner from a shortlist of approved artists who are willing and available if selected, they don't think locally. The only locals in the building are selling t-shirts and hotdogs.

I love Kendrick and agree he was the right choice, but Wayne had songs that talk about Loss , Hurricane Katrina, sociopolitical, etc Tie Me Down, Misunderstood, Miss My Dawgs, Georgia Bush, etc

Kendrick is currently more relevant and is objectively better... juss sayin. Lil wayne always was mediocre to me and im talkin since way back when he was on juveniles track. He only got like one or two songs that genuinely fw But again, this is just an online strangers opinion. He overrated

And it would be full circle cause i was born a Packer fan and always loved how Wayne was a Packer fan too , and i always trolled my guy from Baton Rouge about it cause Wayne likes the Saints too but hes mainly a Packer fan. Wayne is a Packer fan because that 96/97 season Favre and Reggie won the Superbowl in Nola , and idk i think Waynes dad or uncle or some shit brought him back all this Packer stuff from downtown and hes been a Packer fan ever since. So for Wayne to perform at the Superbowl in hometown NOLA would have been full circle moment. Only way it would be better is if J Love won the ring! 😂 I can only wish.
