Farida Batool is an independent artist who explores Pakistan’s tumultuous political history through her work. Her research is focused on new media, masculinity, visual cultural theory, cities and public spaces.
Currently, she’s teaching at and heading the Department of Cultural Studies at National College of Arts, Lahore. She has also authored a book, “Figure: the popular and the political in Pakistan.” Amongst her other achievements is presenting papers and presentations at international conferences and workshops including Yale University USA; Society for Cinema and Media Studies, Montrel, Canada; Oxford University, St. Joseph’s University Philadelphia and many more. As an artist, Farida has held multiple solo exhibitions, along with participating in prestigious group shows across the globe.
Furthermore, she’s an active member of Awami Art Collective: a group launched by likeminded artists and activists to counter the reduction in cultural spaces, that they believe are crucial for peaceful coexistence and celebration of diversity.
At MM Talks, Farida talks about her growth as an artist and using public spaces to encourage conversation around undebated subjects. Some of her most celebrated work includes the understanding of a female figure within Pakistani culture and the eyes that follow women in open places. Farida’s journey to explore, engage and create art around her city, Lahore, continues.
