Free parking in downtown LA's Arts District has been eliminated. The new regulations were postponed after multiple parking kiosks were damaged. Tracey Leong reports for the NBC4 News.

Free parking costs everyone money. Why do you want to subsidize people who can afford to pay for the space they use? Think about it. Without these parking spaces the city could have done something else with this space instead of a place to store someone's private property.
🤷🏻Back in 2016 you could easily find parking for my job in the downtown area. I would walk from the arts district to downtown because parking was free in that area. Now it’s a joke I don’t want to visit or park in the arts district all together. Greedy city leaders are to blame.🖕
Public should put public parking fees on the ballot and make it illegal for the city to charge fees. After all, the public has already paid for these roads. Parking fees are a form of fleecing the public out of more money that they've already paid. So are tolls.
@@omi_godmany places charge for the close parking spots but also offer plenty of free parking where you have to walk a little bit. There should always be some form of free parking. Or just a time limit on spots with a hefty fine for violating.
@@omi_god Public transit in L.A. city isn't safe. People have been stabbed and assaulted in the subways, on buses, and at bus stops. Regular folk are driven away from public transit due to the homeless, drug addicts, gangs, and the mentally ill.

Was surprised the last time I went back to the Griffith observatory. It used to be free parking along the road up the top. In a car oriented city with poor public transit options, these increasing parking fees are really beginning to cross the line.
@@omi_god , Taxation is burden to everyone. We are already being overtaxed in California and you still want to pay more taxes? How can you afford to get your car fixed, pay for food and medical bills, pay for your children's education, visit friends and family a long distance away, save money for your retirement? Well, maybe you are rich enough to afford all those things but most of us are not so go ahead keep writing checks for taxes. Hell, even the paper it's written on was taxed. We are being robbed by the authorities and they don't even have to point a gun at us.
Paid parking always reduces traffic and shoppers, people actively avoid paid parking. The city saying it will help local stores is just lol, and local resident and shop owners are right to be pissed.

The answer would be no, no I have not been to melrose lately or ever for that matter. I'm sure there are exceptions, and I'm sure we can all find exception to just about everything so thanks for letting us know. You're missing my point, and my point is the average person does not want to have to pay to park anywhere especially when shopping. I don't know that area but most people will just go to another area that does not have paid parking if possible. I don't know you personally, maybe you love the city putting their hand in your pocket every time you want to shop. From the report it look like the shop owners were not asked about it and are not happy with it either, same can be said about the people living there.@@omi_god
Many of the buildings in that district are old, so they don't have enough parking spaces for staff, and some have none at all. Also, some of the condos don't have enough parking spaces and/or charge for more than one parking spot. So forcing workers and residents to pay for street parking and limiting the spots to 2 hours is ridiculously harmful. The city needs funds to house the thousands of homeless and this is an example of it attempting to rob Peter to pay Paul. But this will drive both workers and residents out of the area.
Geez. The word “kiosk” has come a long way. The businesses did NOT advocate for parking meters. They are meters not kiosks. The problem is MTA runs this in an isolated box. They do not have any overseers. They will reduce lanes, ada parking , and free parking. Then the mayor gets hassled bc this probably wasn’t even coordinated with the mayors office. Actually half the mayors issues come to them after the fact. It’s all an uphill battle and citizens are all the victims of the machine.
That was well said. I imagine this was plotted effort by MTA to boost their profit margin by getting people to either pay for parking or for a ride on the bus. It's a win-win for these scumbags.
@@gqgx6154 ding ding ding. Exactly. The reality is citizens are not changing like they want hence more traffic. The bus lanes have literally destroyed fluid traffic in LA and SF. Here’s another thing - the city doesn’t have to get votes on stuff like this so it removes politicians who would probably use this to their advantage but still, you’d have a voice but to the politician there is no upside for them as they can’t form any deals or partnerships to line their pockets.
@@papasmurf7684 Covering for the mayor? Not at all. I've worked in the government. I'm just laying it out how it actually is. Most mayors are responsive and an extension of someone who simply oversees the directing heads who actually do the work. Just like the police, they get a call during or after a crime is committed. Only w the mayor's case, their list of issues, demands, and request is more bizarre than you can think of. But yes, most big city mayors are not doing a good job but their worth comes with everyone around them. Its literally a lose lose situation these days.

It matters little about whom is voted into office, there is an agenda that ALL local politicians have to follow - Don't upset the wealthy; Don't eliminate 'cash cows'; Comply with whatever the Governor decides; Ensure the voters THINK you are on their side; Being reelected is the top priority.
I sure hope people don't start using the safe metal gallium to dissolve the steel and aluminum poles that hold up these cameras. They'll have to wait until summer however as gallium is liquid at about 86F degrees or 29C.

The Citizens have spoken . City Council needs to listen or be replaced. Its like all the old bank management/ politicians are still on autopilot. We do not want these agendas and clamps on our freedom as Natural beings
$1 per hour and as soon as meter expires it's a $90 fine. Comes out to be on average $27 per hour per space during hours of meter operation City Hall knows this. It's like drug dealers giving you a special discount for new customers

CDOT says that it was done to increase the availability of parking. If that was so then the 2-hour time limit ONLY would be used, but they also eliminated the free-parking as well. Additional revenue is actually what it's all about!
This is exactly what should happen. Businesses will have to lower prices just so people can pay for the parking. Those kiosks should be banned in Los Angeles. Especially in the ARTS DISTRICT! You should understand that when people pursue “ART” or “MUSIC” that it’s a passion and they will give up MONEY TO PURSURE THERE PASSION!! Let’s the artsy folks,Businesses,workers and visitors have some basic free parking spaces!!
There is an army of homeless waiting for the opportunity to steal those bikes. So you can always bike there, but you'll have to walk home half of the time.
I was just in Santa Monica for a dinner, parking structures were around $10 so I thought I could find cheaper parking on the street. Nope, $8 for 3 hours for street parking that was further away.
You ought to be able to park for free anywhere. LA and other cities have been making it increasingly hard to live and thrive in So Cal. Why should only rich people enjoy parking close to where they shop?
You work, the money you make is taxed, you then take what's left and purchase something, and you pay tax. The money that you spent at the store, they have to pay taxes on that, they then send money to the people who manufactured that product, and they have to pay taxes on that. If you purchase a car or a house, you pay taxes yearly after you paid taxes to purchase it. Money is being taxed 5, 6 or more times before the cycle starts again. Now they want to tax parking on streets that your tax money paid for and is paying for. Government theft at it's finest.

No the city needs to stop be greedy. We pay for the tags on our cars every year we should be able to park in this so called free country unless your a woman.
Get a mandatory percentage of free parking on the ballot. The fees the city gets from this goes to salaries which I think is a horrible thing way of doing business. Salaries should not come from fees.

That LADOT statement at the end doesn't make sense! They literally decreased the amount of parking, none of the businesses or residents requested it, and it DECREASES access to local businesses!
I think that the people of that neighborhood have spoken by the damage to that kiosk. I don't think they're ever gonna get one of those up and working long enough for them to collect any revenue
Reminds me of toilet stall terminals, where you have to pay to use them. They were especially popular around the turn of the millenium, but time's change when people choose to live in those bathrooms
Parking in LA is getting ridiculous. Especially in the San Fernando Valley. People are monopolizing parking as if they own the free public parking by using another car as a placeholder. People are starting to park in red zones and in front of fire hydrants, and the postman can’t even find parking it’s ridiculous something’s gotta be done.
The city doesn’t think about the workers in Los Angeles. Where do they park? The workers keep they city going but aren’t being thought of. Shame on you la city.

Vandalizing these machines is criminal and it will be costly to taxpayers, if now is a dollar per hour wait until it raises two or three dollars per hour.
