Towards the end of his life when his eyesight had faded so that he could no longer reads music it was suggested that he might retire. His response was that he no longer needed to read the music as he had 40 different concertos off by heart along with over 100 solo piano pieces and could play any of them to concert standard at the drop of a hat. He was not joking

What a treat to see Rubinstein perform one of my favorite piano concertos! I'm struck by his economy of motion: no big arm movements/flourishes, no rocking, no grimacing or faces, he has almost no expression, and it doesn't really change! He's like a Buddha of the Piano. I kind of love it, since there aren't any visual distractions when watching him play! I'm curious if this is different from his style as a young man, but we'll never know, since there are probably no existing films of him pre-WWll (after all, he was born in 1887!)

Rubinstein was fairly animated in concert up into his early 80s. Here, he’s probably in his high 80s, but Beethoven was never really what animated him. His typical movements include raising his arms high off the keyboard at the strike of a very accented chord, possibly the end of a phrase; raising up out of his seat for huge accents; and making his hands “dance” the part - holding them high and coming down strong on chords. Technically, most of his “animation” is just the way he plays at the keyboard, but he was more animated than a lot of his contemporaries like Horowitz, Abbau, Richter, and such.

I am now 48 years old, I started to learn music theory at 4 years of age, I listen actively to classical music since I was 8. I've listening about maestro Rubenstein all of my life, at one point I remember I had a box set tapes of Brahms Piano Concertos with maestro Rubenstein, but I guess I was never lucky enough to see him in actual performance until now. It is a great a privilege and a great joy to hear and watch this clip and deep gratitude, and appreciation to whomever downloaded this clip.

Agree with these comments. Wonderfully elegant expressive performance by Rubinstein - what a uniquely stylish pianist he was. But I was also very impressed with the conductor Haitinck. - he seems to effortlessly generate weight and momentum from the orchestra while keeping it totally under control and musical. A great combination, these artists. With a bit of help from Beethoven!

Saw him twice growing up. He believed that the music conveyed the emotion the composer wished to express. Other means of expression distracted or modified this intention much the same as changing notes or phrasing would.. If you want to express your own emotions write your own music. That is what he said to Glen Gould.

GRACIAS!!!! Coincido !!!!! Saludos

One evening in 1967, after study, I walked through Royce Hall at UCLA, and, heard unmistakable playing. (I was a music student) Heart pounding, I hovered outside the auditorium in the hallway, immersed in bliss for the remainder of the first part of the program. When intermission came, I glanced inside, and noticed a very few inexplicably empty seats. I snuck in, self-conscious a bit of my shabby student attire, but, I could care less! To say that I enjoyed the second half of the recital is an understatement, and, when I told my mother later that evening, that I also had gotten in the receiving line, and had my hand very-lightly-grasped by the master - she said that "I must never wash that hand"!

[ Canada Homeless Challenges Rubinstein ] How to challenge Rubinstein? 1. Have to change m26,m28,m38,m40 fingerings. 2. Advise to change m42,m44 fingerings. 3. Throw Chopin etudes, Liszt etudes, concert etudes etc. Practice Op.740/1,12,49,50. 4. Never use finger 1,4 to play black key octave. 5. Only use finger 1,5 to play black key octave and white key octave. Octave tech. is 100% wrist Tech. 6. 200 years ago, finger action with quiet hand is more important than hand action with quiet finger. 7. My new piano theory is wrist tech. more important than finger tech.. 8. U of A professors advised students to practice Chopin Etude op.25/6. It is wrong. Playing Beethoven thirds, Op.299 is enough. Playing Mozart piano concerto thirds, Op. 740/10,34,39 first page is enough.

I love his stately and tonal quality in the 1st movement. A great complement to Uchida's more fiery, and equally well-interpreted rendition. i/m/o, Uchida lends broader feeling and depth to the 2nd movement, while giving a more stately and tonal breath in the 3rd, showcasing what might have been an Oriental influence on Beethoven's composition of that movement. I deeply love Uchida's overall rendition of this piece. However, it's near-impossible to overstate the wonderful artistry of Rubinstein here.

The premise is that the 'conductor' has something to do with how the superb orchestral musicians play - as if they need to be told to play softly or forte. That is why they are TRAINED. And I would add - during the opening tutti, he does not count properly - many of the silences are cut short. Terrible.
