Triumph and tragedy: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink. The audience loved this 2009 concert at the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
(00:00) Introduction
(00:35) I. Poco sostenuto - Vivace
(14:46) II. Allegretto
(22:46) III. Presto
(32:08) IV. Allegro con brio
Ask a person on the street what their favorite Beethoven symphony is, and they’ll likely say the Fifth, or the Ninth. But ask a classical musician, and a surprising number of times you'll hear: The Seventh. "Here every impetuosity, every longing and ranting of the heart becomes a blissful exuberance of joy." Those effusive words came from the pen of composer Richard Wagner, when he was describing the Symphony No. 7 in A Major, opus 92 by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827).
Composed between 1811 and 1812, Beethoven's Seventh provoked very different reactions from the beginning - it seems to have touched everyone deeply. The main themes in Beethoven's 7th Symphony are triumph and tragedy - the tragedy having to do with the second movement, a sort of funeral procession. It was so well loved at its very first performance that the audience called for it to be repeated. This movement is marked "Allegretto," which can be translated as "slightly fast." But for a funeral march? Certainly, the first listeners must have perceived it as such. The premiere performance of Beethoven's Seventh was at a benefit concert in Vienna for wounded soldiers and their families in December 1813. It came only two months after the Battle of Nations near Leipzig. The German name is "Völkerschlacht" (Slaughter of the Peoples), one of the most catastrophic wartime events in human history. It also marked liberation from Napoleon's forces. The sad, beautiful quality of the second movement makes it very different from the other three movements of Beethoven's Seventh. Endlessly mournful, but also uplifting, it is still played at funerals today.
But the dense juxtaposition of dignified funeral marches and movements full of exuberant joy in Beethoven's Seventh also caused alienation and even rejection among the composer's contemporaries. "He's ripe for the madhouse!" wrote composer Carl Maria von Weber. Weber had just heard a performance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony with its rollicking fourth movement. It can be amusing to read how the first listeners reacted to a composition that is today a classic. Weber wasn't the only critical voice. Clara Schumann's father, Friedrich Wieck, thought that "this symphony - particularly the first and the last movements - could only have been written in a state of inebriation."
Fast-forward from then to now: Need a little lift? Then listen to the finale to Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major, opus 92, marked "Allegro con brio" (fast, with verve). The tempestuous interpretation by Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam was met with thundering applause and enthusiastic calls for an encore.

Watching him leave the stage for the last ever time will live with me for ever. He caught my eye as he left. This performance, the sound quality, the camera angles are all up the the wondrous ;level of the performance itself. I must say, he takes the last movement a bit faster than I would like, but I loved it all. So glad he performed all the repeats - it makes such a difference ! RIP Sir and Bravo, Bravo.

Look at maestro Haitink's LEFT arm/hand from 39:25. It is so powerful. It conveys the utter will power of this conductor and orchestra to do it like they think it should be done. And then during the applause (41:41) there is this little abrupt thank-you movement with the hand. The signature movement of Bernard Haitink. Full of graciousness and happiness.

I love Beethoven's music and the 7th Symphony is truly remarkable. I am a dedicated amateur jazz pianist and have even been trying to play the opening theme of the 2nd movement by ear as I cannot read music. Apparently when this great work received its premiere, Beethoven had to be turned round to realise that the audience were on their feet thunderously applauding. The scene is depicted beautifully in the film "Immortal Beloved" from 1995 with Gary Oldman as Beethoven. That this great genius could be robbed of his hearing by his early 30s and yet leave what he did for humanity for all time is truly remarkable. Beethoven represents the triumph over adversity, his life was not easy, and he denied himself the stability of a loving relationship in order to dedicate himself to his music. A genius and also a heroic figure. When I improvise on jazz tunes at the digital piano in my local church I like to think that I am on a low rung of the ladder of musical creativity, a hierarchy of music which leads to the likes of Beethoven at the very top. I love it when he did variations eg Diabelli variations for piano. My favourite works of the German genius are: Symphonies 1,3,5,6,7 and 9; the piano sonatas, especially the later ones; the songs; the late quartets as performed by the very best players. Beethoven also had humour in his music too eg in the Eroica piano variations at one point. We should always encourage family and friends who don't know Beethoven's music to try it, for me it is like a lifelong friend that never lets you down. Great performance from Bernard Haitink and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, much appreciated on a night when I could not get to sleep.

If I am not mistaken this version of Beethoven´s symphony no 7 becomes an example of something that is really good from the start, and then becomes even better under Bernard Haitinks conducting. Never have I heard such a splendid version of this symphony, with an orchestra so full of spirit that it can lift the roof of this Concertgebouw many meters. All under maestro Bernard Haitink, he is the real hero of this performing.

Bravo, Maestro Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra! I've been a bit obsessed with Beethoven's 7th for some time, and had the pleasure of attending the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra's performance of the 7th early this year. 2022 has been my personal "Year of Beethoven"; I've attended a number of concerts by both the FWSO and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and heard several Beethoven symphonies (including the symphony of symphonies, the 9th) and piano concertos. What a thrill it's been!! Though nothing beats a live performance, listening to/watching all the classical music on YTube is the next best thing. I'm grateful to all the musicians/orchestras and to YTube for providing such a rich diversity of music for us to enjoy 🥰🎵

Beethoven eres Eterno....

This is my favorite of the Beethoven Symphonies. There's a particular swoop that I am fond of in the fourth movement, which always seems to get missed when the tempo is a little high. Wasn't missed, and my ears were satisfied. It was a joy to watch this performance. Especially on a nice early spring day. Also the ending on that third movement. Oh man, that was perfect.

wonderful...attended a performance of Beethovan's 9th last night by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra ....wonderful estatic elation by the packed house at Benaroya Hall... Yet still the 7th resonates with me deeply as my favorite of Beethovan's Symphonies... Bravo Maestro Haitnk.... now onto Gershwin's Concerto in F Major which I suspect was his homage to Beethovan's 7th... Happy New Year friends... may 2023 bring many Ode's to Joy....
