Arturia KeySTEP midi controller, sequencer with arpeggiator has been out now for 2 years, so how does it stand up today? Is it still a good purchase? I've done some extensive online research, and checked into what has happened over the last 2 years and share this info with you.

As you may have heard, Arturia have just released the Keystep Pro - a much more featured controller, but probably more closer to the Beatstep Pro than the original Keystep. The original keystep is still a really good controller for the money - and the new Pro is quite a bit more expensive. So hope you enjoy this review - it is still quite valid, even almost 2 years ago when I did this. I personally like the Keystep 37 the best, not too big, bpm display, but AUD $300, Keystep is $200 and Behringer Swing $139. I went with the Behringer on price, plus I have had good experiences with their gear. The Keystep Pro is a beast, but around $1000 here in Australia!

ranzee , thank you for your constructive feedback. In my case, I can report an issue about the sequencer not starting on playing mode, as well as the arpeggiator. One observation would be that Tap button will never blinks... ( all Factory reset have been done) 🙄...

Hi Ranzee, I have just purchased a Keystep : ) and am using it with a Roland System1. As a guitarist, I am hoping to use it to play 'one key' chords and arpeggios via an external midi pedal board, (Studiologic MP 113) I can do this from the KeyStep keyboard, but now wish to use the external MIDI pedal board, thing is, I have no idea how to get the external keyboard working with it, I can only use it via pass thru direct to the System 1. Hoping for some advise? Thanks

Hi Alan, I don't think you can drive the chord mode via an external controller. But your idea does sound like a cool challenge. Maybe someone else here has tried it?

Thanks, some interesting facts. I'm pretty darn close to getting one and especially loved the fact I don't need a computer. I want to turn up, plug the keystep into my mother or neutron and away we go. You mentioned needing a computer to access a few of the sequencers options, is this a major issue with using it to make a rolling sequence where you can constantly add to the sequence and build it up ? Great video btw nice clear instruction.

Hi Mark, thanks for the nice comments. To answer your question: you can amend and append your sequences on the fly - and no need for computer - this all works amazingly as a standalone. I think you'll be quite impressed. They have exceptional resale value - so if you don't love it, just pop it up for sale :)

I like the KeySTEP's Aftertouch feature! I power it with a 9 volt (rectangular) battery and this strange cable I found with battery clips on one end, and just the right plug size and polarity to go into the KeySTEP's power adaptor socket!

Great video. I have one en route to my place. I'm hoping to connect it to my laptop to play sounds off of that...kind of like using the 2 together as if it were a small synth or piano to do some practicing and demoing with, through Logic Pro X. Is this a good plan or am I overlooking anything obvious? Thanks!

Thanks Joshua. The 2nd controller would only give you the ability to control something else - it doesn't extend if that's what you were hoping. I have 2 of them and use them in different setups - 1 is connected to the Mac and the other is connected to my Akai MPC Live.

ranzee, Thanks so much for your reply. It would just be used for playing in real time and would only be connected to the Mac. Any recording would be done in Logic. I imagine most sound patches or plugins that I can use would be found in Logic too? Just open a track and so on. I’m far from home and more or less wanting to jam on a keyboard with a simple setup. I’m starting to think that all I need to do is plug in the usb to be close to being on my way. There are some very cool features, but those are really a bonus for me. I don’t do much, if any sequencing or controlling other synths. Is this sound reasoning? Seems like a useful product.

hi ranzee, my pitch and mod dont work on my keystep. Do you have a screenshot of the default midi controller settings inside the midi control centre? Also on usb mode how do you have the tranpsort control play and stop from the keystep?

Hey. Probably better to do a factory reset (back up all your sequences first - using the midi control center software). To factory reset hold down octave up and octave down at the same time whilst powering the keystep ON. This refers: www.arturia.com/faq/keystep/keystep-shift-function-chart

I wonder if you can help. When I plug my keystep into my Modular, the notes seem out of tune or half notes. Not the definite notes you would expect. Also the adsr doesn't give the sound you hear on RU-vid video. Could it be faulty. It has limited keys, so not much I can fiddle with. I'm a beginner and don't want to buy a new keyboard if it's not needed. The one I have is secondhand. I tried updating it but had issues. Maybe cause the serial number has already been used.

Hi - So I've got everything syncing perfectly, the transport starts all the gear....BUT....I have one issue that I can't find a solution for - When I press PAUSE or STOP on the Keystep, ALL the clocks in the synths go back to their internal clocks instead of being controlled by the Keystep. When I press PLAY again, the clocks go back to syncing to the Keystep. So put simply, the Keystep is only sending clock when the PLAY button is pushed. Is there a way to avoid that?

There's some settings for MIDI clock in the MIDI Control Center software - have you played around with them? Specifically look under Transport Settings ;)

I'm guessing they have prototyped many versions, What I want leans more on the CV side but including MIDI to CV and plus a build in modulation matrix and sequencing.

Hi Barefoot Joe :) I'd imagine something like that would require either lots of physical plugs (like on the MiniBrute 2S) - or a screen + data entry interface like on the Behringer DeepMind 12. That would be cool, but it would be a more "pro" version!

Yeah for sure, I own a keystep and sold my beatstep and push2, maybe just 1 set of cv for note, and 4 cv outs for modulation would be enough, but yes I agree the price point would reflect whatever we are dreaming of hehe. I do appreciate how Arturia keep it budget, and there's really no other good MIDI plus CV options around, they should a pro version before someone else does. :D

Hi I've just picked one up second hand. Start button is sending cc message to ableton on press and release (so not latching). So creates a stutter that messes up timing. Any ideas? Cheers.

Do you think a orthogonal micro-usb plug would help? Maybe even use ducttape on it to keep it from moving? My Akai LPK25 has its socket on the side, that makes it less vulnerable, I think.

I had a Line 6 keyboard (hardly used it, too little deskspace) that also felt that vulnerable, so the issue is not new to me.

Is there a way to access the midi map of a Keystep and reassign aftertouch midi info?

You could do it with a DAW and re-route the MIDI based on a filter. There are other devices that do this like a MIDIPal - or even use something like MIDIOx on the PC.

I want to know if keystep allows me to do the following - have it connected to my daw (let's say a vst synth sound) and connected to my eurorack simultaneously, and, at the press of a key, I trigger both the daw sound and eurorack independently (and even have each sound going to different channels in my mixer and crossfade them with the individual mixer volumes). If so, which ports should I use? CV for eurorack and USB for the computer? MIDI? If so, is this only possible with the keystep or are there other controllers that will allow me to do this?

Hi, kindof - but really no. If you want the keystep to play multiple parts, you need to look at the Keystep Pro. Otherwise you can only do this with the KBD Play feature whilst running a Sequence or an ARP. This is shown in another video of mine.

I think they fixed alot of the issues in the latest firmware but if my usb breaks I have a power adapter and midi cables and I can solder. even the oxygen pro does not have dc port so if the usb port breaks you have to replace it solder it and same with oled acting goofy ... also arturia works with big sur I am on a m1 mac

The Keystep is a controller - it doesn't make the sound - you will need an instrument in your DAW or a hardware sound module. Hope this helps.

I Am trying to connect a keystep to an electribe2 via midi ,can you please tell how you connect n set up so it controls the e2 and what the settings are on e2 [eg]global/channel and stuff like that as stuck,thanks

Answered in other video - but duplicated here for referencing: Use a DIN cable (MIDI OUT Keystep to MIDI IN e2) ... They keystep and the e2 work straight out of the box without any changes required. You can control each part of the e2 using the SHIFT + MIDI channel feature on the keystep.

Despite having 'transpose' printed on it, it doesn't do note transpose ;(. If they ever do a keystep pro I would expect a proper transpose function, something for those of us who don't want to learn every mode for every scale.

Hi Sushant, MIDI controllers differ greatly - and the decision on which one you should get is very personal. Can you provide me with more information about your setup, the type of music you do, whether you perform live etc. Are you a serious keys player (like a concert pianist), or a two finger jammer like me (lol). All these things will help with getting you some direction to your question.

I just bought one of these today (Aug 2020) and then watched this video. I hadn't even opened the box and was concerned about the mention here regards the wonky USB connection. First thing I did was check it with the supplied cable and it is solid as can be. No movement whatsoever ant tight. Maybe this was a fix on this unit? I'll leave the cable in so the port doesn't get overworked. Its solid 👍

hi wicked, yes it works (otherwise a few of us would be angry with Arturia) ... in the case of triggering two keyboards: you can only run one sequence at a time, so unless your two keyboards are running off the same MIDI channel, you'll only be able to control one. If you're after a multitrack sequencer - you may need to look at other products.

Whats the build quality like, not expecting a tank but just something thats not to flimsy. I have to say I love the look of it and I'm sure it would inspire me to get more done. Small keys not a problem for me as I have dainty girls hands and cant play anyway!!

Hi lardosian, they are built quite well - with the exception of the micro USB port. Mine has lasted over 2 years, and is still going strong. I have been told they're releasing the black edition again too!

Hi Omer :) It already has a transpose option (SHIFT + Oct-) when in that mode you can transpose your ARP using the keyboard and pressing a single note. What sort of transpose option were you after?

Hey, this works only while in sequencer mode, I am looking for an option to transpose the keyboard in semi tones and play in a different key. This is a very basic feature which exists in almost any keyboard or digital piano... keystep only allows transposing full octaves while you play, not semi tones. or am I missing something?

you have the pitch wheel - and I do believe you can adjust it and make it "stick" - so that could be a solution for you :)

@@ranzee I would say he means a NOTE transpose mode. So the non players attracted to this budget controller can play in any key, using a basic 'C' scale. Most other midi controllers have NOTE transpose. The transpose on keystep is OCTAVE transpose only. Its a shame because this feature would be so easy to impliment. ;( {} . Now I wonder if a single note ARP would work... the trouble is that ARP would always be playing and not waiting for you to press a key, or a chord.

Also enjoyed my Keystep over the years. Would like to see a Keystep Pro with knobs, sliders, LED - as you described - with a few more Keys (37?) and 3 sequencers (3 sequencers/arps running concurrently) with the ability to play a 4th voice/track on top using the keyboard. Keystep Pro, along with various synth apps and AUM on iPad would make the most amazing portable studio!

Absolutely Valdis Krebs! The BeatStep was followed by a Pro version after a couple of years. Let's hope they do the same with the KeyStep. On the other hand, Arturia just released the KeyLab Mk2. IF a KS Pro is in the pipeline, we might have to wait until the end of the summer before it's announced. In the meantime, we'll just have to cross our fingers ^^

OLED screen or the ability to connect to a phone or tablet to do the same. Then we have exact BPM etc..when going Dawless although this form factor does force you to concentrate on the sound/music rather than flashing lights.

I'm not sure about that rumour because Arturia recently released the new keylab...also..i don't want to have to buy yet another item and then go thru the process of selling my keystep...it is the tyranny of an ever changing technology. @@ranzee

I bought mine a few months ago and it's been awesome so far but I've recently encountered an issue with the sequencer. Whenever I try to make a note longer than a step by pressing tap while holding a note, as it says in the manual, it ties the last note in the sequence with the first. Furthermore, if after introducing a 2 step note with this method I decide to tie two other notes together it simply disregards the first input, making it effectively a 1 step note followed by 2 tied notes but while still tying the last note of the sequence. I can get over this issue by tying the note I want longer than a step with itself for each step I want it to last (To make C 2 steps longs I need to press C, then release the key and the press "tap" + C) but this is a workaround and this function is covered in the manual. Am I missing something? Or is there something wrong with my unit?

Hi Axel. This was mentioned in my video, it is known that ties and long notes are problematic on the sequencer when you enter them directly on the device itself. I think most users are able to get around this by using the sequencer software in the MIDI control center application. Hope this helps :) Have an awesome day!

ranzee Oh, didn't notice that, sorry; that's a relief. Although the MIDI Control Center is pretty handy I had intended to use the KeyStep away from my computer. One can see how this is a problem as the same note has a different velocity per step when sequenced this way and it's specially tiring with chords, but I highly doubt Arturia will fix this considering the KeyStep latest firmware is 2 years old. As for a KeyStep Pro I would like some way of sending midi CC with knobs like the one you showed in the video, really useful for old rack synths.

FWIW, here are Arturia's notes for most recent firmware update (1.0.1.15), released 25-Aug-2016. *Improvements :* ^ Factory reset implemented ^ When in external sync, pressing play from pause starts in the beat *Bugfixes :* ^ Arpeggiator now properly plays when synchronized from 1 step (Gate) ^ Proper CV output when in Seq mode while the sequencer is paused ^ No more unwanted notes and silences after switching from Seq to Arp while paused ^ Appending notes does not play them instantly on the CV output ^ Tap Tempo LED blinks in sync in Arp mode ^ No more stuck note in Kbd Play mode when switching MIDI channel ^ Very rare crash when connecting to a PC for the first time. ^ Empty sequences can now be saved ^ Real-time recording of rests does not generate tied rests

I avoid any weirdness with the transport controls by setting their CCs to 124 in MIDI Control Center. It's not an ideal solution if you use the Keystep as your DAW controller (thankfully I do not), but I'm not sure what else can be done. I actually like the standard white more than black. The only reason I'd get black over white is because there is no concern about it turning yellow a few years down the road (aside from the keys). It isn't a particularly well-designed product - lack of feedback with the sequencer and mod strip, multi-octave arps are flexible but cumbersome, keyboard range is small, some sequencer functions must be done on a computer, velocity outputs to the same jack as mod so it's one or the other, and of course issues with robustness - but it's the best bargain around, for better or for worse. And spending more time to hammer out all those issues undoubtedly would have caused the price to be higher...which I'm okay with. Here's hoping a Pro version comes out. Oh, and one thing I hate about Arturia - the fact that they feel the need to put their damn advertising slogan on their hardware. It's tacky.

is there a way to delete a sequence? without recording 64 rests in a sequence? just a simple function to start from nothing and perform in a sequence? this seems so basic but i cant figure out how to save 8 blank (or even one) blank sequence, or just delete a sequence with one quick key command......do you know if this is possible? anyone? help?!

yes - there are MIDI channel numbers printed above the keys 1 to 16. Simply hold down SHIFT and press the key corresponding to the MIDI channel you desire.

you could do it using a DAW. There are some hardware options too - for example MidiPAL/Bro/Gal will do that sort of thing. I also think the MPC Live/X sends the KeyStep out on all MIDI channels too.

I love Keystep but I absolutely hate this touch strip I wish there was wheel. Also 3 complete octaves would be nice but its already hard fit into backpack (I would get larger backpack if they added few more keys)

Hey Incel, there's actually some benefits to the touch strip - as you can "touch" it in random places creating a unique way of using the mod and pitch wheels - something you can't do with a wheel.

its not a bad machine , but i have to say some things are very annoying in workflow and operation fe. -no deleting possible of a current sequence (other way to tapping in new notes every time or set the step length) -keyboard play not possible when controlling a synth via cv (onyl available via midi) -sequencer has weird behave from time to time. (no accuarte start on midi clock, changes pattern length) -button combinations operating the sequencer are not very intuitive and logical to me. -no more saves then 10 sequences in the device itself.... plus the last update is over 2 years old now dont know if i would buy one these days with the experiences of the last 2 years.. only my 2 cents

Hi Lars, I read some people experienced issues with the sequencer - but mine never had them and the updates listed bug fixes for the sequencer also. You could look at the new Novation controller - I haven't had a chance to check it out, but I hear some good response from it. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience.

@@ranzeeHi Ranzee. I purchased my keystep yesterday. I found no issues with mine or the sequencer. I use the MIDI Control Center to program my step sequences with no problems too. However I will add that i wish they would add to the MIDI Control Center under Seq section that they add Time Div & Rate for each step seq created. They could have at least added 4 control knobs too!!

How does someone with no experience get the Arturia keystep to work in Windows 10....Not a single video on youtube to show how this installs and works in windows. Right now I have a $118 paper weight. The users manual is useless unless your an experienced user. I just want to make some noise...Why things have to be so difficult? This should be plug and play or step by step instructions on getting this to work in windows....Any help or a video on the subject would be helpful....thanks in advance.

First this is not a stand Alone, you need some plugin/app/program/software/hardware. Second you have the midi Control center from arturia that you can download!!

One of the most annoying things that they never solved; to errase a sequence and start a new one with one push on a knob. Now you have to errase all steps one by one. What they were thinking when they designed the keystep in the beginning?

Bought one in early april 2018 and it lasted just over 2 months! No signal coming out whatsoeve; flashing button lights but no sound. Amzaon said after 2 months their A-Z Guarantee expired so I had to deal with the dealer direct who accepted the unit being shipped at their cost and sent me a new Keystep. A headphone jack would be nice! Why does the keyboard begin with an F major key.

@@ranzee The Behringer Swing barely exists at all, design wise. If I spray painted over the logos and put Arturia on it, who would notice? One innovative thing Behringer did was make it slightly wider, like very, very slightly!
