Niko, an Arvanitika speaker speaks to an Albanian and an Arberesh about our language[s]. This has NEVER been done before so this is a FIRST EVER live comparison between Albanian, Arberesh and Arvanitica.
Niko is from Kiriaki, a village of 2000 people near Livadeia, in Attica. ...

@dashohoxha
@dashohoxha 2 года назад
Problemi është se toskërishtja nuk ka ndonjë standart (me sa di unë), dhe as gegënishtja. Janë thjesht disa lloje dialektesh që klasifikohen si toskërisht, dhe disa të tjera që klasifikohen si gegënisht. Kështu që secili duhet të mësojë (në shkollë ose në familje) gjuhën e katundit të vet, dhe mos ta lërë të humbasë.

@@theduchess3 Yes, Arvanite, even though it does hold some of the Gheg dialect, it's much closer to the Tosk. Same here. When I first heard Arvanitika it sounded like the language spoken in the deep villages of southern Albania by older people. But, you can also see the difference of how old the language spoken is, because the middle ages is not the only time Arvanites went to the southern part of Illyro/Pelasgian Peninsula(which is today's Greece). There were always populated with Albanian speaking population there. So, you can see the difference of the archaic version, the more newer version of the middle ages and then the standard version which is that of today's Albanians who have immigrated today.
@albarmy1
@albarmy1 2 года назад
Marco...this is exactly the same story for me. My grandmother never went to school so she never learned standardtized albanian. She spoke pure Tosk dialect and has so much similarity with arvanite & arbereshe dialects. That's the reason i can easily ubderstand them. I wish I could speak like them but I have learned all my life standard albanian and can only remember words and pure tosk dialect but not speak it.

A lot of things could/should change in this world but are not likely to happen. I feel for Albanians that lost territory but so did many other cultures around the world. Did Greeks not lose territory? As far as i can tell modern Greek culture embrace their Albanian brothers culture and borrowed from it in many ways

Gheg: shkja>adv. shkjenisht. North Tosk: shqa>adv. shqerisht. Arvanitik: shkla>adv. shklerisht. Byzantine Greek: σκλάβος/sclavos (“slave, Slav”) → Eastern Latin: sclavu- → Thraco-Romance: *sclau- → Proto-Romanian: scļau → ARomanian: șclĭau (“slave, servant”), Romanian: șchiau/șcheau (generally meaning ''Southern Slav'', especially ''Bulgarian'', rarely ''Serbian''), Old Gheg [& probably still dialectal]: shkla, definite: shklau>Albanian: shkja~shqa, definite: shkjau~shqau (''Bulgarian'', generally ''South Slav''). ''Shkja'' really means ''foreign/foreigner'' in your [Gheg] dialect? When the people use this term, it is reffered generally to foreigners, including Greeks and ARomanians, or it is exclusively used for the [neighboring] Slavic people around you/known to you: Serbians, Montenegrins, Macedonians? Thank you!

It's been decades since the greek state in a subtle way is trying to erase the arvanite identity. Especially the language...because it's a dialect of albanian language. Back then the orthodox church in Albania (obviously of greek influence) declared albanian language as a forbidden language because it was named as the language of evil 🤣 True story. Albanians of Epirus only spoke it secretly in their homes to keep the language alive. Unfortunately same with arvanites.

Just as we have both Sicilian and Arvanite ancestors and our language is the result of that, yet people minimise it and try to say we speak a dialect of Albanian

Po toskerisht eshte por nuk duhet ti merzisim Geget se ata jane me shume te fiksuar se kush dialekt eshte me i vjeter. Te nje video disa muaj me pare ku doli Martini me Klajdin te gjith shkruanin kjo eshte gegerisht dhe spo e kutonin qe ishin fjal te perbashketa te jugut dhe veriut. Per nje tosk eshte shume e lehte per tu dalluar kurse per nje geg eshte me e veshtire sepse gjuha zyrtare eshte toskerishtja dhe ata i perdorin te dyja versionet prandaj i dukej si geg

A minority language with no official status,oral with no literature tradition,no eclessiastical tradition etc wouldn't help people from the Arvanite villages progress much if they wanted a life in the city outside their small society.Arvanite couldn't stand a chance against the Greek language which was the dominant in the country.People eventually had to give it up,just like many Greeks assimilated in southern Italy,Ukraine,Russia,Turkey and even south Albania

what's sad about that? What many do not know is that arvanites do not consider themselves to be a minority. They love Ellada and have fought for this country, they see themselves as genuine Ellines and they have the full right to do so, Arvanitas connects more with Greece than with Albania, they do not consider themselves as Shqiptars but as Helleno-arberores and that should be respected

1/3 of Arvanitika vocabulary is Greek-derived. Arberesh language also has a considerable percentage of Greek-derived vocabulary. In Arberesh language: "village" is hora from the GREEK χώρα [chóra] ('land, village') gjitonia "neighbourhood", from the GREEK γειτονία. dhaskal "teacher", from the GREEK δάσκαλος. "thank you" is haristís [xaɾiˈstis] from the GREEK ευχαριστώ [e̞fˌxariˈsto̞] ('thank you'). By the way, in Arvanitika its fharistisem. Different but again Greek derived.

Arvanitika has a bit more Greek influence, because Arvanites live in Greece since the 13th century

Interesting! Hm, can you give me the etymology of the word "gjitoni"? Because we can deconstruct it easily in Albanian: gji = chest/breast; ton=our. We use this expression even for when we are saying that we accept somebody in our group "ne gjirin ton".
