This one hit pretty hard. I'm autistic and praised for the things I create but never for the way I am that is the direct reason I create the way I do. The only time I hear something good about me being autistic is when I'm told that at least I'm 'high functioning.' Sure, I guess, but isn't that just because I never let you see me when I'm not functioning at all?

"Problem instead of child" God that hit me hard. I'm so used to being the problem before I'm a child who's learning how to navigate the world.

What he said about pity hit hard. Of my brothers, two of them are on the spectrum and all I ever see are people either uncomfortably ignoring them, or babying them and acting like they're some kind of stuffed animal to baby and pet. People either see them as degenerate or as some sort of cute pet, but never as human. Never as human.

“When you find the cure, don’t call me first.” I literally said FUCK YEAH out loud when I heard that. Yes. A thousand times yes. Don’t call me either. I don’t get how anyone can think the concept of “”curing”” the very foundation of the way someone experiences the world and their own thoughts and thrusting them into some unknown “other” isn’t horrifying. I don’t want that. Don’t do that to me. Don’t do that to anyone.

I am so glad I found this. As an autistic human, I want to have a voice and thanks to wonderful humans like this, I think its possible now. Thank you. This was heartbreaking and beautiful.

I'm on the spectrum and one time I had to explain to a woman why I left the room. She felt sorry for me and my parents. Like dude, NO ONE DIED! There is nothing to feel sorry about.

My son is on the spectrum - he was diagnosed just before his 3rd birthday & is now 7. Its been a long road full of people who dont understand (including our own family members) but I wouldn't change a thing about him.
