Saturn I-B - unsung hero of manned spaceflight.

Only had five manned flights; Apollo7, Skylab(s) 2, 3, and 4, as well as ASTP! Only Redstone (2 flights) and Atlas (4 flights) had less.

The circular Oxygen tank from LC 34 in NASA storage, was purchased by SpaceX for $1 over salvage price. The tank was then moved to LC 40, refurbished, repainted, and now used for Falcon 9 launches. Apollo 7 was the last launch (and only manned) from LC 34.

I remember this one. It was on a Saturday morning during my senior year in HS. It was scrubbed but for some reason I kept my 19-inch black and white on. Minutes later the vehicle was back on the screen with some commentator exclaiming “The space agency has reversed its decision! The space agency has reversed its decision!” Not long afterward, the most powerful rocket in America at that time was off and climbing. It was the only live Saturn 1 or 1B launch I ever got to see. I missed the remaining unmanned test, Apollo 7, all three 1B Skylabs and ASTP. According to Dr. David Baker (of the U.K. and my favorite space scribe), this was actually Apollo 2. Apollo 3 was another 1B launched that summer. That led to Apollo 4, the first Saturn 5 in November 1967. Apollo 5 was a 1B unmanned test of the LM in early 1968. Apollo 6 (with its famous pogoing)was the final unmanned Saturn 5. This sequence was supposedly a tribute to the Apollo 1 crew. Please keep up your usual excellent work!

Thank you, sir. Like the 70’s detective “Colombo”, here is “one more thing”. If I had my say about it, this mission tomorrow (if indeed it goes) should be called Apollo 18. I’d say that’s a nice tribute.

Interesting that there was live broadcast coverage of this unmanned launch. I recall only a few times for the networks to break into programming for a test launch, the most notable being a Titan IIIC in 1965 and the first Apollo Saturn V stack in 1967.

Fantastic that you were also able to get video of the recovery of the command module! Great pics, too. I’ve long thought that the Saturn 1B plus the Apollo CSM could have been our Soyuz, our regular, relatively safe ride to space, and a lot more economical than the shuttle.

7:35 the names of the 6 astronauts who are flying the chase planes to observe the launch. So sad when we hear Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chafee included in that list. They were observing what in less than a year would be their deathtrap. 😥

Most interesting take on this mission (AS-201) - the Block 1 CM lost steering control and re-entry telemetry due to incorrect wiring. Bad wiring would kill 3 astronauts a little less than a year later, in the Apollo 1 pad fire. If the wiring problem on this flight had been more carefully researched, maybe they would have lived.

The problem with that is that the 1B team and the Command Module team worked more than 2000 miles apart for different companies and both horizontal and vertical communications within and across organizations was a real challenge back in the 1960s. Managers were forced to rely on executive summaries and those things were and still are very thin on useful details like wiring issues.

@@lunarmodule5 agreed, Simon. They took the steel off in about 1981 so it wasn't so impressive anyway. I got to see and hear the testing as a kid, so I miss those stands. The Vehicle Checkout Lab and other buildings are still about a mile away though. It's called Security Park now.

Thank you Simon for another fantastic addition to space flight history! The space flight teams and management of the '60s certainly weren't perfect... They had to deal with a tremendous tragedy. But all in all I hope that our present space flight teams involved with Artemis can match the dedication and expertise of that era.
