I got started this year at 28... I kicked myself for starting late but hearing that Dave went bankrupt at this age and turned it all around is reassuring that total financial freedom will one day be obtained just like he did.

Don't kick yoursel too hard. Work hard, pay off the debts you have, invest as much as you can and give back as much as possible. I just turned 27 and only really started this year, so I'm right there with you! We got this.

I discovered Dave Ramsey a few months ago . Paid off my car , 2 credit cards quit my stupid gambling & addiction to unnecessary Amazon spending & now It seems strange (in a good way)that I have money & Im not anxiety ridden because of just squeaking by every month plus I cut down on eating at restaurants regularly. I wish I’d started listening to him 20 years ago .

AT Toufa That moment when you talk about what you’ve learned to other people your age and they treat you like a child saying “you’ll learn better some day. Use debt to make wealth. Why pay off debt when you can offset it with entrepreneurship and get rich quick. Are you sure Dave Ramsey is real? It’s probably a Multi Level Marketing scheme. There’s always a catch” .... I felt so weird.

My step mom and dad have been talking about Dave for awhile now and have been trying to get me to read his book and Ive been blowing them off trying to fix my awful credit score (540) by myself with pitiful income while Im in school. Im gonna read his book now. He seems to be extremely knowledgeable on money and living debt free. He also seems to be a great guy which is what my big worry was because I didnt want to read his book and I not gain anything from it in case he was a scam artist but I dont see that now. I wish I knew Dave before. But coming from Malaysia, I'm 32 now and just realize that I need to fix my life. Annual income 40k not including my business. debt is 40k in student loan and 47k in car left. Last week just paid off 15k total of debt in credit card and student loan after I got my bonus salary. With that I'm calculating about 4 years to finish all mu debt and currently on track. Luckily I already set on home and Healthcare is basically free in Malaysia. We also have 11% cumpolsary retirement saving so I cannot stop that. That's a good thing I guess. I work as a chemist and looking forward in improving my income in coming years. I also have a small nursery and painting business where I sell flowers/bonsai and painting online. which I slowly develop for my retirement job doing the things I love. I'm thinking of retiring at the age of 45.

One of the best decisions I made was on our most recent car purchase....and that was 15 years ago. We identified the car we wanted, which was a returned at the end of a 3 year lease great looking, clean record vehicle that still had some manufacturer's warranty on it. Spent $300 to have our local mechanic check it out, and he found one thing that needed to be fixed, so I told the dealer it needed to be done before I'd buy. And in a few months, it will be 15 years with only one problem other than routine maintenance, new tires, etc Great price, great car and no regrets about not buying new.

You should start with the lowest balance, pay it off, and then take whatever you were paying toward that and put it toward the next highest balance - the 'snowball' strategy. The idea is that the steady progress will build on itself and help you stay motivated to follow through on each bigger debt.

Mr. Ramsey, you're awesome. I've watched just about all your videos. I've learned a lot. I'm currently in college at UNR. I'm a year away from finishing my degree. I'm a little older at 27 but it took me longer. I had to pay my own way because my mom isn't very good with money. I moved to Nevada with $200 in my pocket to see if I could work hard and learn from her mistakes. Because of what I learned from you I started sowing some financial seeds, I've been able to pay off one of my three student loans and my credit card on a modest income of >$700 a month. I'm working on paying off the 2nd loan and my credit card next. I think it's awesome that you offer this stuff to people for free. I'm gonna see if I can budget to buy a copy of your book. Bless you Dave.

Dave preaches that you should have zero debt and an emergency fund of 3 to 6 month expenses before you purchase a home. monthly mortgage payment shouldn’t be more than 1/4 of take home pay and should be a 15 yr loan and you want 20 percent down to avoid pmi. I can attest that purchasing a home without a emergency fund and debt is a bad idea. Murphy always seems to come around when your not prepared. Good news if you can save 50k you know how to live on a budget. Now the key is to avoid over buying

I've been watching your RU-vid videos for a little while now and I absolutely appreciate all the information you give us. My only problem is most of your callers that call in are single parents as I am myself but all of them have incomes of 50 60 80 100 thousand a year between husband and wife or just singles. I have struggled my entire life raising three children I've worked as many hours as I possibly can work and I continue to struggle. I start my own cleaning business in 2017 because I was tired of being the one that was let go in the positions that I held because of downsizing or whatever other reasons. How can somebody start getting out of debt when they can't make enough to survive on. My house I've been trapped in for the last at least 15 years they've got me an interest rate that I can't get out of although my credit scores are higher now than they've been my entire life I can't refinance because my house will not appraise high enough to refinance on top of have to have PMI insurance now and everything else. My debt between my house, my car, credit cards, and student loans I want to say is probably around 70 to 80 thousand dollars and I have a yearly income of about 18,000 I dont know what to do anymore. Nobody understands how depressed I get at times but I just don't ever see me getting any further ahead. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I've tried watching budget videos I've tried watching envelope stuffing I've watched your video to do envelopes but where do you start if you don't have money coming in on a regular basis as I do mine is varying all the time where do I start to be able to put money in envelopes to know that I can pay for all the bills I need to pay.

I don't know what Dave would say, but my mother is in a similar boat. She works the overnight shift at Wal-Mart, makes 25k a year, and an affordable housing home won't be paid off until she's in her 70's with only enough to live a couple of years into retirement. Best thing I can say is put trust in your kids to help you. If they can build a career and wealth, hopefully they will repay you. Make sure they are goal oriented if they are still young. Good grades equals scholarships in college, and in your case most likely financial aid will make it affordable (for me it's a few hundred for textbooks and gas, that's it). Share expenses as they get older so that you can both save so they pay less rent, tackle their debts and build wealth, and you get help on your payments. It may be a grind, but your kids could be your ticket out. Good luck.

@@usersixtyfive7840 There's a difference between taking out money to follow your passion or get a worthless degree and borrowing money with a plan to become a doctor and make enough to pay it back. When you graduate, keep as large a gap between your salary and expenses as possible. Use that gap to tackle your debt.

Do the baby steps apply to people over 50? Or disabled people on a fixed income?
@jenniferw8963
@jenniferw8963 6 лет назад
My house payment is $557 right now, but I can pay it off in 2.6 years by paying $2000 per month -- which I have been doing for the past few months. Should I be maxing out my Roth IRA first before paying down the mortgage? Or pay my home off first. I'm 47 now and have nothing saved for retirement.
@acebragg5559
@acebragg5559 6 лет назад
Going by the Baby Steps, you should be putting 15% of income to investments at this point, assuming you have no debt other than the house. Whatever is left over can go towards the house. We are in the exact same spot you're in right now, Baby Step 6.
@jenniferw8963
@jenniferw8963 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. 15% is right around the Max Roth IRA contribution. I've figured out my plan: 1) going to save $5k cash first which will take three months. 2) put $5500 into Roth IRA for 2018 -- take an additional 3 months. 3) Then after that I will make monthly Roth IRA Contributions of $458.33 along with paying off the mortage each month as fast as possible. 4) after about 3 1/2 years the house will be paid off and I'll continue to put max contribution of $6500 in Roth IRA until I die (or quit working, whichever comes first). The rest of the money each month will go into S&P 500 Index Fund along with some select stocks like Amazon, Apple, etc... dollar cost averaged over the months & years.
@acebragg5559
@acebragg5559 6 лет назад
Good for you! You're ahead of us on the house. I'm figuring 6 years for the house. We could do it quicker, but I'm figuring in vacations and updates to the house too and those will all be paid with cash (of course).

Hmmm...?? I was surprised that Dave didn't allow for the caller to take advantage of the student loan debt forgiveness through his employer. The caller had another 5 years before his student debt was forgiven. I wonder what his balance would have been at that time. I would compare that balance to the interest paid in the next 5 years. If the remaining balance were large enough, seems like a shame to not take advantage of that "free money" benefit.

Why would he pay off his student loans if they can be forgiven in a few years? It doesn't sound like he's going to be leaving that job anytime soon. Wouldn't he be better not doing that and throwing that money at his mortgage or other debts, and just let them write themselves off?
