It was for the guy that played Benji apparently, method acting that is. He supposedly had actual claustrophobia down there which I mean duh I would too lol! They didn’t even use a lot of lights to film it, mostly the actual headlamps on the actors, fucking nuts. Very cool way to film a movie, low lights, little actors, actual catacombs, honestly seems pretty low budget
There was a theory that I personally liked about Benji’s “thing.” The theory was that he got a girl pregnant and abandoned her before she and her baby died during childbirth. Benji getting stuck (resembling the complications), his hands getting skinned from the paracord when going down the hole (resembling the umbilical cord and the vaginal canal), and finally seeing the mom and baby before he dies.
Yeah I like that theory too, bc the woman holding the baby who jumpscares him isn’t the same woman from the club/cult. Is the club/cult woman supposed to represent him cheating on/abandoning his wife and child since he kept checking her out at the beginning? Idk
youve got your names mixed up. the guy with the kid never died. benji is the black camera man who had little to nothing going on, im almost certain he dies ? but yeah youre talking about zed, the man who walks off in the end. he literally is seen on camera saying hes going to go see the wife and child, so either he means the graves or those people are alive and your theory has no weight@@heddelinpralin1481
It’s interesting that the character that leads them in is named Papillon. Papillon is the French word for butterfly and in a lot of cultures butterflies are associated with immortality, rebirth, or death.
I think Benji didn't get a window to get rectified because he didn't regret it. The other three expressed visible regret and took the fault. Paps got a window because he regretted it, but his pride was bigger than his regrets.
aoighhh i always loved the ending of zed just walking off. scarlet and george excited and having their happy ending infront of the man who watchdd all his friends die. the man whos friends they dragged down there with them for their little treasure. and the fact they get their little happy moment before noticing him again and stopping. tjey got their relief ending and he lost all his friends. its so fucked up in a cool way
There was this huge time gap in which I hadn’t seen the movie in a while and had a dumb Mandela Effect in which I was so sure only Zed and Scarlet had exited and upon watching it again this year I was like “what do you mean 3 people survived?!”. Truly one of my weirdest moments
@@TheTillmanSneakerReview They’d have to retrieve their corpses first, which would be far too dangerous and time consuming, especially since Benji, Souxie, and Papillon died pretty far apart from each other, and one of them (Papillon) was stuck pretty far in the ground and they’d have to dig him out first before they could revive him. Scarlett nearly died multiple times while sprinting back up the path to return the stone.
Disclaimer for anyone wanting to illegally visit the catacombs: FIND A GUIDE ! Don't try to go alone, the most dangerous thing there is not geting caught by the police, it's geting hopelessly lost and people have died that way !
12:50 Papillon's legs sticking out of the ground must be a reference to the realm of simony in the 8th circle of hell from Dante's Inferno. Dante and Vergil encounter a bunch of people buried in the ground with their legs sticking out and set on fire. They all turn out to be guilty of abusing the office of the church in some way. One of them turns out to be Pope Nicholas III. Dante really had a thing or two to say about the church irl.

@@azathoththe3rd Yeah, self-insert fan fiction in which he put a bunch of people he personally didn't like in Hell, not because they were bad people but because HE THOUGHT they deserved to be there.
i always assumed that when they climbed out of the manhole they were going into a different version of their world. like halfway through the catacombs was the entrance to hell and they never exited. it made me always want a sequel of them realizing it's not their world. only recently did i realize that might have not been the intention of the ending
A small detail about La Taupe is that his pupils are blown wide open, supporting the theory that he "hasn't seen light in a very long time". I hadn't noticed the fact that he seems to freak out only when light shines on him! Nice catch!
I remember being such a huge fan of the finale. I actually really liked when Zed just walked off and they went their separate ways. Like, all this insanity just happened and they're all just in shock and kinda... done lol it's an understandable reaction, at least to me.
Not horror, but I once get hit by motorcycle and sprawled in sideroad, I basically just stand suddenly, brush it off and go to college, didn't even mention it to everyone. After I went home however, the pain and shock suddenly came all over, I even cry then. Thinking about it now still make it strange, what a delayed reaction
Honestly, same. Go home, sleep it off for a couple days, probably be catatonic for longer and never speak on it bc u know people would just call you crazy and a druggie.
The funny thing is that it's only kind of a horror movie. Yeah, it's scary during some scenes, but what is REALLY is throughout is a throwback to 1930s pulp adventure stories, very similar to Indiana Jones. The characters are all classic pulp tropes. But how do you even market that? So they had to go with horror.
I'm a huge Dante's Inferno fan, and huge fan of Horror, so 'As Above So Below' had me SO excited when it came out. It's a *criminally* under-rated movie, and to see you cover it and think it is as well made me so happy!
Bruh, I remember watching As Above so Below and getting to that part where she had to run back, I busted out laughing. That was the most "video game" shit I've ever seen in my life. All the threats, the horrors, the fears-OUT THE WINDOW! CATCH THESE HANDS DEMONS!
It's not the perfect movie, but I think it deserves way more recognition. Something about the ending of the least important character surviving to the end, and then just silently walking away from the main characters struck me as such an amazing ending.
I agree! And honestly, I think Zed being the “least important” and living mirrors Dante in his journey. Dante portrayed himself as a nobody in the Divine Comedy, and it’s poignant that this type of journey could happen to anybody.
I genuinely loved this movie. Me and my dad went in blind with zero expectations, loved it, and watched it a second time the same evening so we could talk about it and pick it apart. Yeah, it's a found footage film, but at the time it was different. It felt like there was some effort put into this movie. That was a breath of fresh air compared to the paranormal activity cash grabs coming out every year (which I begrudgingly enjoy even tho dad hates them)
I watched The Descent almost back-to-back with As Above, So Below, and I was rather impressed at how both utilized that kind of claustrophobia in very different, yet effective ways. On that note, how has this man not covered The Descent yet? Seems right up his alley.
It’s kind of funny because after watching The Descent, I can’t help but think certain scenes or moments in other movies or games remind me of The Descent. Of course no idea is original, but I’m curious if that movie influenced people.
Final Prayer's final act got closest to the nightmares I had regarding claustrophobia. Descent and As Above are great but Final Prayer is unrelenting during the last chunk
i was a small child when i watched the descent and one of the jumpscares got me so bad i had to walk around my house to try and ease my panic attack but i ended up passing out instead. i've always considered rewatching to see if it's still gonna scare me but i have a heart condition so that's probably a stupid idea
Loved this movie. Just so you know. The theory is that their friend The Mole died in the tunnels that is why he can teleport and is dry when they swim through the tunnels. He mentions that no one came to look for him so his body is still in the tunnels. Since it is based on Dante's inferno because he also didn't do enough bad or good in his life, his soul is meant to wander the tunnels aka Limbo. Also I highly recommend a Found Footage horror movie that was great it's called Savageland.
One theory that I really like about Souxie is that her "sin" was that she had killed someone in a similar way La Taupe had killed her. Cause I think they were in the "ring" of Wrath when Souxie was murdered. So Wrath= Violence, all that jazz. Anyways this movie is great, and I love it to pieces
I wonder if maybe the two of them had a fight and either La Taupe left willingly and she was too angry to look for him. Maybe there was some sort of abuse too but I think the whole thing is more about guilt then it is about directly killing someone? Idk I'm just guessing and it seems like it might fit?
@tyannashaw7845 well Wrath is usually associated with violence. That's why I myself made the same connection with how she died. Especially after I heard the whole rings of hell thing and that they were on the Ring of Wrath.
I really do wonder if it was guilt from them losing him in the catacombs like that. Sometimes stuff like that can be cut for time... I wonder if thats what were seeing here. Scene's being cut for time that could've explained her guilt or just her story in general for whatever that may have been. It does make the most sense to me that she did carry guilt for his death and didnt rectify her sin for it... and thats why in the end he directly causes her death. And it was violent the way it was because they were in wrath technically... and maybe his spirit carried wrath inside because he felt like they never came to save him.
i remember watching this and saying "hey that was actually ok, 5/10" then seeing how everyone hated it i was confused and eventually watched it again, and actually liked it more the second time lmao
Yeah my only hate for it was the ending where they just walk off 😂 it's not the reaction I was expecting but everything leading up before that was scary af
@@cruxmind I just thought it was pretty creative for what it was and I love me some fun creativity! It was like ghost encounters and blaire witch had a baby hah
This is one of the few found footage films that I actually love. I think the stone... is a red herring. The whole concept is that if you can truly believe something to be true then it is. That's a lot harder to do than you think. The stone is almost like a mythical object that, because of its lore, can convince people to truly believe, which makes it work. But the stone was never really necessary, it's just a catalyst for a power that's within you the whole time. The concepts are also just metaphors for their struggles with trauma. As above, so below. The one dude who's brother died shouldn't be beating himself up. He was a kid who got lost, no reasonable person would ever blame him for it. But, because of his own skewed perception, he sees himself as guilty and is haunted by it. And how could scarlet know that one call from her dad would be the last? Plenty of people ignore calls for one reason or another, she doesn't deserve blame for it. Yet she she's herself as guilty. It's only once they realize that the only path to RECTIFICATION is within themselves, by facing and letting go of their guilt, that they are able to escape the hell that they have been continuously descending into. It's a great movie imo that unfortunately came out when found footage was in its downfall (this came out 2 years AFTER Paranormal Activity 4).
I agree! She even says that "As above, so below" represents that the (magic) inside is reflected in the outside world. She believed so damn hard, that a rubber duck probably could have healed Souxie, and that's why the main character herself can heal people without the stone. I'm sure the stone is as much of a useless token as the gold treasure was.
The only movie to truly make me feel a sense of claustrophobia. I also really loved the idea of a Lara Croft style final girl- in horror, it felt fresh. Throw in being a sucker for Dante's Inferno allegories, it really hit a very specific need that I didn't know I had until seeing this film. I felt the end started to spiral out of control though, and how few people knew about it's release- done dirty.
If you want another movie with a great sense of claustrophobia I HIGHLY suggest The Descent. A great piece of cave diving horror that you’ll enjoy if you liked As Above
I wish there was just one guy in the group with no baggage or tragic backstory. Everyone being tormented by visions of their past mistakes except that one guy he’s just there.
Like the one little girl in Silent Hill 2 (the game, not the movie) whose just roaming around not bothered by any of the horrific depraved hell-shit, and heavily implies she's just strolling around in a normal abandoned town.
@@tessfabled4115alternatively, what if their thing is relatively minor, but their self esteem is so low or their background has so many ties to abuse and scapegoating, their psyche magnifies it into something far greater and part of their arc is to come to terms with the fact that beating themselves up and taking responsibility for stuff that’s not theirs doesn’t solve anything.
As a guy who mainly watches horror movies. I actually thought this was pretty good. It's different. Sure it has cheesy jumpscares and cgi, but the fact that this was actually shot in the catacombs makes it way more real. 6.5-7/10 A tip for a good horror movie to anyone reading this: I saw the devil.
@@Mylittlestcorner I saw the devil 2010 is like a breath of fresh air. It's something different than the stereotypically Hollywood horror movies. Hope you enjoy it🤞
Having been in the Catacombs (just the public areas), there is a certain level of unease and claustrophobia that is so difficult to describe when you're 65ft underground. It's not a claustrophobia in the traditional sense. It's more an understanding that if anything happens, there's so little you can do. There's no elevators or escalators, just miles of tunnels and over 110 steps spiraling upwards/downwards between you and civilization. As much as I enjoyed this movie, I wish they could've leaned into that feeling more. It hit in certain moments but flopped in many others.
I've been on that tour too, and while it's amazing to see the remains arranged in all those interesting and even whimsical ways (a heart of skulls set in a wall of bone? Sign me up.), there is a certain dread underlying the whole thing. First you walk through narrow corridors that are empty, the walls are plain, and it's difficult to actually move as you trudge through wet clay. As you continue, you can hear water splash in the side halls, beyond the off limits signs - but as it hits the clay, it sounds like footsteps. Or even chewing.
So fucking happy to finally hear as above so below getting it’s well deserved flowers. I’ve been preaching this movie to everyone for years and no one has seen it’s worth
I got to see it in theater. It was amazing honestly. The audio was so much louder during the tension building scenes. It didnt matter if you looked away, your heart was still racing from anxiety the whole movie. I truly think this is the perfect horror movie. It has elements of psychological horror, believable demonic sh*t going on, gore, and just enough jumpscares to keep you on your toes. I cant stand when movies are oversaturated with jumpscares. It ruins the movie for me but As above so below did a perfect job
I was big into the occult when I first saw this movie, and I've been in love with it ever since. The overall theme of being haunted by your past sins until you face your trauma head-on and find the strength to become a better person? With some cool Indiana Jones-type archaeological fantasy around it? Along with some of my worst fears regarding claustrophobia and existential dread? That's fucking dope.
I haven’t seen it but I’m impressed with the ambitious story. I thought it was going to be 80 minutes of “oh no we’re lost! where are you?! heeeeellp!!” But this actually sounds pretty good even if it’s reach exceeds it’s grasp.
I'd like to think that facing her father is a take on Dante traveling through the circle of hell where where suicide victoms are turned into living trees and are torn apart by harpies. He goes there and discovers his mother, who killed herself when he thought she just got sick and died. He makes peace with her and releases her spirit to heaven (purgatory possibly).
This is one of my top 5 favorite movies. I love that she had to return the stone. Meaning, any number of people have already taken the stone succesfully. Once they passed through hell, the causality of the world was inverted. She legit had the stone powers after taking the stone, until they crossed through hell, at which point she no longer had the powers until she returned the stone and the inverted causality gave her the power again. Similarly, to get out of hell, they all had to undo the causality that brought them there. It's a thematic representation of the psychic concept of a mirror wall. You never quite cross it, but if you stare long enough at it you realize that you are on the other side and the reflection you're seeing is who you once were. You've crossed without ever crossing, and as such your world is now inverted in any number of meaningful ways so long as you can hold the vision.
So I freaking love Zed. I know they kept him around (film wise) to just be the camera guy for the "like scenes" but that little awkward walk off makes me giggle so hard.
I'm really surprised this didn't turn into a series honestly, the Catacombs have a lot of horror possibilities. Even if they had to build sets and aren't able to film on location again.
On IMDB it says the following: "This was the first ever production that secured permission from the French government to film in the catacombs. The film utilizes a set of narrow, winding tunnels of the Paris catacombs, complete with real mint skeletons creepily arranged centuries ago."
I think they're saying that they're surprised that there isn't a series, but that it would be cool to see one even if they weren't able to film the series in the catacombs. I don't think they were denying that the existing film was filmed in the catacombs.
I've always thought Benjis guilt was abandoning his wife after their child died and Benji maybe started to cheat on his wife (hence the more pervy (ig) behavior)) also since the baby the woman is holding doesn't look very responsive.
Also as a side note although I'm currently very drunk and watching this in an excited wine daze, as a gal who inhales horror movies like there's no tomorrow;chronically underrated movie, made me feel like I was suffocating just watching it, and the best thing I've seen covering the 9 circles of hell bar The House That Jack Built... Which, incidentally I would also love to see you cover! Thank you so much for getting me through another tough night GG! Massive love to you as always, Lottie🖤🖤🖤
I remember watching this film three years ago and being shocked how low the reviews were. It’s not perfect by any means, but it is definitely entertaining.
As Above So Below is one my top favorites, something about it's theme gave a very dark and unique experience which I am always looking for in movies, other then a great plot twist.
As a seasoned horror fan, this has been a perennial fave since it came out. Glad to see it getting some much deserved laurels. All that is gold does not glitter, and this gem truly is a diamond in the rough.
I like how at 5:57 he mentions that they get camera footage of her, but not the fact that there is some WEIRD ASTRAL PROJECTION IMAGE OF HER also caught on camera at the exact same time LOLOLOL
I liked this movie but I will say the bit where the girl runs back, kicking the shit outta the monsters did make me laugh out loud. Like totally ignoring all the trauma they went through to get from A to B and she just Mario stomps from B to A and back to B 😂
"The classic Pap-smear if you will" 😂😂 5:36 Great review! This is one of my favorite movies. I remember watching this is theaters with my mom. We both hate small spaces so that scene with them crawling across the bones felt like it was never ending! I couldn't sit still, I didn't even realize I was shallow breathing until it was over lol Totally agree about the couple details in the end, - he died! - but it's still a solid film
at 5:57 when the mysterious woman walks by, the light overlay on her, there is some type of demonic scene cast over her. I never noticed it in the movie and I'm gonna go back and rewatch it bc thats honestly so cool!! I love cool shit.
I never connected the specific methods of their death to their character history, but I don't think they went to the same version of Paris that they left from. A mirror dimension, an upside down version of Paris. But hey, i missed the obvious deaths/character history, so what do I know. Just seemed significant that they had to push 'up' on the sewer cover to get out. I kind of expected a Shyamalan twist at the end to show that they weren't in the same paris that they left from.
GG is such a great content creator. Not only does he give really detailed and helpful cues for those with trigger warnings, he deliveries it so flawlessly I felt I could still experience the content to its fullest just listening.
I agree wholeheartedly. Especially when he gives startle warnings. But yeah MistaGG does it right, not making a big deal, but doing a lovely courtesy to viewers.
I love this movie, I think this hits a really cool horror niche of historical horror. Using Dante's Inferno as a horror movie setup is unique and cool. We've seen slashers and ghosts, but if we get more movies like this I would not be mad. And it makes sense for the protags to keep going, they wanna finish their lil National Treasue quest/
Aside from the jump scares, which every found footage horror movie used let's be honest, As Above So Below was a really good scary movie. A descent into the catacombs under Paris is actually one of the few settings where going with the found footage viewpoint fits so much better compared to the normal 3rd person perspective.
Oh, man. This is one of those few movies I wish I could go back and watch again for the first time. It kept me glued to the screen- AND reminded me how seldom movies blow your mind and surpass expectation. Pure pleasure. I watched it right around Halloween maybe a year or so after it came out. I’ll always have a soft spot and try not to watch it too much so I can try to recapture that feeling when I do.
This is one of the movies on my tiny list of horror that actually scared me, and I was always kinda embarassed to admit that since it's ratings are so poor. But I genuinely love it and find the whole concept quite terrifying!!! It's also just entertaining. Seeing your review makes me feel more confident to say it's a fav of mine lol
so true! i did the tour a year after i watched the movie and was a bit scared during it lmao, doesnt help that when i took photos inside the catacombs they came out super weird (when nowhere else in paris happened, before or after)
It’s just really fun to think “what if the catacombs lead to hell” a rad premise even for a non believer. For it to not be totally silly is something I can appreciate. An effort was put into this movie and it’s low scores are unearned imo.
I honestly see this as an unofficial Lara Croft movie, fits her story type. Lost historical site leads to a hidden location with a lost treasure and a supernatural elements. She’s smart and capable and even her family problems echo Lara’s closely
In 2001 I was in the Paris Catacombs helping a resistance movement known as Silhouette, by rescuing a couple of people from a group known as Majestic 12. I was only trying to pass through one part of Paris to another as the city was under curfew/martial law at the time.
My friend group was so hyped for this film. We'd chant back and forth "As Above!" "So Below!" up until theater day, then enjoyed the hell out of it. Pap's feet were terrifying, and we still do the chant when we see mention of it in the wild.
LOVE seeing my man cover this underrated movie! ..but even more, LOVE seeing my name listed after FINALLY becoming a top tier Patreon! ;D After years of enjoyment & rewatches, it was WAY overdue for me to do so & feels great supporting one of my fav creators! Love & support my dude!
As Above So Below is one of my favorite movies. It is great, fuck what the critics say. I like that GG called out how Scarlet is the quintessential "Mary Sue" type. I wish we got a bit more backstory for Benji and Siouxsie to explain the why for them. Like always a banger of a video
This movie shook me when I saw it in theatres, I think the whole concept of descending into hell really freaked me out it definitely stayed with me. I’ve tried to get people I know to give it a chance ever since, I think it’s a great found footage horror film. I watched it again the night before I went into the Paris catacombs and it really set the mood 😂
I know i'm super late to seeing this, but As Above So Below is my favorite horror movie, and I'm so glad you covered it. Most horror movies are just so cheesy now, but this genuinely scared me when I first watched it, and left me with so many questions.
This has been my favorite movie since I first saw it when I was in high school. I really appreciate that you gave it a fair watch despite how it was received critically because personally I think critics were too harsh on it. It strikes such a fun balance between its horror and archeological basis that I really appreciate as an archeology student. I've seen this movie more times than I can count and I just love it despite its flaws. Also my theory for Benji's death is that because of the way the baby was being held that he was either with a woman who miscarried or had their baby die while very young and their relationship couldn't survive that stress which I believe could actually be foreshadowed by Benji's panic attack when going through the bone passage as it shows he doesn't do well in stressful situations and its also a scene accompanied by the women singing which further solidifies the theory to me! I just love this movie so much every time I watch it I just have a wonderful time!!
This was the first found footage if not only found footage movie I actually found scary. The level of suspense you get is absolutely perfect and feels like it could be real found footage instead of being super staged. It’s not currently in my horror movie dvd collection but is absolutely worthy of being in my collection
You should check out (if you haven’t) Rec, Grave Encounters or Hell House LLC. Those are really well done found footage movies that spooked me and I enjoyed as much as As Above So Below.
This was the first horror movie I saw in theaters with my mom!! I remember that we both left the theaters loving the move. It's so underrated and one of my personal faves. I am glad you covered it!!
Man, this movie rocks. I'm by no means an aficionado but out of all the horror movies I've seen in roughly the past 10 years, this is one of the few I actively remember, recommend, and rewatch. It's just a cool idea, executed well, that doesn't overstay its welcome. Not a masterpiece, but easily near the top of a pretty big list.
This is the first movie my boyfriend and I saw together, and as we're approaching our 1-year anniversary, this video couldn't have been posted at a better time. This movie is *chef's kiss*!!!
I'm someone who really hates horror movies, but this one has always been on my golden short list, I had no idea it was so underrated/underappreciated! The scene with the creepy cult choir cutting off abruptly still pops into my head to give me chills.
I would love to see you cover The Skeleton Key. It is listed as horror, although I have always thought of it as more of a thriller, but it is a movie I have always thought deserved more love than it got.
Yes! Especially because it’s one of the few movies where the protag doesn’t get away unscathed. I love me some fuck around and find out. It’s delicious. My family is from Louisiana so it has an extra special place in my spooky lil heart.
Oh, I remember that movie! One of the first times I was blown away by an ending I felt like I should have seen coming. It was a vaguely cheesy plot - sure, but the acting was so good that it started to feel all too plausible very, very quickly.
This is why you should NEVER listen to reviews. This movie is incredible, but most people won’t give it a chance for their own viewing because they check rotten tomatoes.
This is one of those movies that feels like a hidden gem... It's not because it went to theaters but it was easily forgotten by a majority of people! I'm a huge fan of Found Footage movies and I'm not afraid to admit that it's my favorite sub-genre of Horror. I know a lot of people can't stand the shaky cam, low budget stuff but honestly that's part of what makes me love it even more. There's certain feelings that you get from Found Footage (if it's done correctly) that you just can't replicate with other horror styles. Blair Witch is always a good example where it feels real when you're watching it and certain Found Footage movies stick with you long after you see it. As Above So Below is not the GREATEST found footage film ever but it is one of my favorites. I never got to see it in the theater but I watched it a while after at home and I really enjoyed it. I love the references to Dante's Inferno, the acting was pretty good from several of the cast, the scares were decent. I was honestly surprised that 3 people made it out at the end... usually with stuff like this you get maybe one character that survives and it's usually the main girl... I expected everyone to die and the camera to just be left somewhere for someone to find. All in all, if you enjoy Found Footage then you'll most likely enjoy AASB!
Honestly I LOVED this movie from the first time I saw it. I went to the local theater with my mom and it was genuinely one of the best theater experiences Ive ever had. I've watched it since then and it still holds up amazingly.
this is LITERALLY one of my favourite movies ever!!! i'm glad you covered it because i watch it every year, and it really is an above average found footage movie
I’m so happy to see you give this movie props! It’s one of my absolute favorite horror movies of all time and it definitely gets overlooked a lot. I think part of the problem was that it came out amongst like 20+ other movies that were all shaky camera/POV type footage so everyone was kind of sick of it at that point. But I think it did a really amazing job and was a really cool concept.
That is one of the ONLY FOUND FOOTAGE films in the universe where the film WOULD be found! I remember watching a found footage in which the film ends in a parallel universe. At the bottom of the sea and, besides all the other problems with it, I was like "WHO THE HELL IS GONNA FIND THAT FOOTAGE?????" As Above so Below goes to great lenghts to show that the footage suevived. I don't know why, but I LOVED that!
when this came out it was for my 14th birthday and i had a party at a hotel with all my friends and we watched this right before bed and screamed and had to go to the bathroom together. this movie has always been so so good it solidified my love for horror and is always a recommendation i give
The first time I watched this I was actually really impressed by the claustrophobic feeling I had throughout. Once they realize they are trapped they have no choice, but to go deeper into the catacombs. This constant descent made me feel more and more closed in and directed. It is the general "cave horror" gimicks that made me feel more constricted. The whole Dantes Inferno angle works too, but you have to be looking for it.
If you have to go into the Paris Catacombs and/or hell to find a choir that's chill with you showing up to practice topless, you may want to consider finding a different hyperspecific hobby, js. Also something I got as a connection to Inferno was the river of blood with the hands poking out, which was in the circle of hell reserved for the violent (including against self, thus why she saw her dad there). Also incidentally the same circle has a beautiful garden with chill centaurs, but that's neither here nor there. In the end, as far as how REC meets National Treasure _could_ have gone, this was definitely on the better end of the scale. Not necessarily amazing, but definitely worth the watch.
I really stopped thinking "professional critics" know better than anyone else after years of reading so, so many confusing movie and music reviews and feeling like i was wrong over half the time
Man, I was so PUMPED for this movie when it first came out. The trailer looked amazing to teenage me. The graphic design with the title alone gave me chills. I ended up being a little underwhelmed when actually watching the movie, but I still harbor a fondness for it. It was a fun take on found footage in a unique location.
Maybe the interest has passed but maybe check with Wendigoon.. he made a video on Dante's Inferno a little while back. I love this movie and Scarlett was a total badass in this movie. Although when she went to return the Philosopher's Stone, she was able to go back climb up the dangerous areas they had been and basically made it look like she was running to the local grocery store instead. Makes it back easy as pie and saves the day. Put her in the MCU why don't they? Great video indeed.
Thank you genuinely. This has always been described as a hidden gem by me. It deserves so much more attention and I'd even take a *WELL DONE, THOUGHT OUT* sequel nowadays
I *HATE* found footage as a genre and had no idea this would be a found footage film when I went to see it in theaters, and I still loved it. It's an amazing movie.
I watched *As Above So Below* back in September (I think) and I loved it. It was the first found footage film I ever saw and it was pretty good. I wish it got more recognition. The only complaint I have is that the characters did not prepare properly for their journey into the Paris Catacombs and made several bad decisions while they were there. They didn’t bring most of the necessary supplies for cave exploration, disregarded a lot of safety precautions, hired a guy they met in a nightclub to be their guide instead of a trusted individual, didn’t use line markers, didn’t inform a trusted friend before entering the Catacombs in case they needed to be rescued, brought people like George and Benji who were afraid of caves, bones, rats, and confined spaces who were most likely going to be a liability (especially Benji), and ignored multiple red flags that anyone with basic common sense would take as a sign to get the hell out of there. With all the stupid decisions they made, I’m surprised it took so long for them to start dying.
GG, thank you for the videos! I've been going through all your movie reviews lately and have been having a blast - they've helped me cope with post-Halloween blues! Have a great day!
